“Ne… this city… the capital is really odd for outsiders…” she hummed, knowing part of what he meant by adjusting since it took her some time to get over what happened when she first arrived. “And it is different… the merchants that come from here and there so I can relate a bit.”

“Me? What have I been doing?” She went silent for a while, wondering if she should admit with so many people getting busy with their own affairs so on her own all the time… Besides it was more dull than someone who got to go all over town looking for issues to stop and the like. “Actually just the usual routine… train early in the day, get what odd jobs I can during the mornings then errands on the way home… and finally working in the shop doing the normal. I suppose more in a rut to be truthful.”

“You sound like you’ve been keeping busy yourself.” He thought aloud. He paused for a second and sighed softly before continuing. “Sometimes I wish my days were simple like that. Not having to worry so much about what is waiting behind the next corner.” But he did what he did to keep it like that for her and everyone else in this town. If he didn’t, who would watch for dangers lurking in the city?

“But, I suppose if you find yourself in a rut, maybe we could go out together again. It may be a nice change of pace for you.” Inviting her to patrol was too dangerous by far, but if she agreed to perhaps going out together more often it may be nice for both of them to take a break for their daily routines.

“Besides it’s something a young boy would do ne?” A quick hum had her trotting after to take up a spot beside her friend, keeping with his pace while listening in while he took the lead.

“That sounds good, who wants to get caught up in a fight when you’re out having fun?” She chirped up at him, not that she was above throwing a punch or two but why even let the evening go that far. Also if it was close which means getting drunk was less of worry since wouldn’t be that far to get home again. Glancing up she looked thoughtful for a moment. “So, since it has been a while… what have you been up to? I see the patrols and such… but surely that’s not all you are doing hm?”

Shinta was enjoying the calm walk to their destination, he was always so used to being on edge it was strange to let his guard down; even if it was just a little bit. He was smiling and nodding up until she asked him what he had been up to lately. He took a moment to reflect on just what he had been doing... it had been a while since they last spoke so he wondered just where they had left off.

“Well yes... the patrols have admittedly taken quite a bit of my time to be honest with you. But I have been trying to get out more... explore the town. Everything is a lot different in the day time when there are people out, but I think I am adjusting... slowly.” He gave a small laugh, thinking about his recent adventures in town were rather humorous to reflect on, just not while they were happening. “What about you? Have you done anything different than usual?”

Shinta wasn’t normally one to solicalize if unneeded. Talking wasn’t something that was really needed in his line of work so he was used to the silence. However, being in this market and looking around at all the stalls had made him consider that perhaps he should ask someone for some advice. Looking over to the person closest to him, he took a sharp breath before speaking.

“Excuse me, might I ask what you would recommend to purchase in the markets?”

It seemed that the soldier was willing to be to questioned by him and took this seriously. Saito was glad that he was being compliant, not causing a fuss which could’ve made his job harder for him. “Okay, I shall get straight to the point then.”

“I’d like to know what rumours are going around the soldiers in regards to the Shinsengumi. Mostly in relation to any suspicious activity going round the headquarters.” Now Saito had finally asked the questions that he had been wanting to ask. He knew that this would rise some suspicions to this soldier, but if his answer proved useful then this exchange would be worth it.

Shinta should have guessed that Saito wouldn’t beat around the bush with his questioning... Still it was hard to have been prepared when he didn’t know how he would answer regardless of the question. Shinta frowned in thought, there were many rumors, but picking out the ones the captain would like to hear would be slightly more difficult. 

“There are many. Some of the whispers I hear are from soldiers who stayed out much too late and things they saw... or heard in the shadows. There are also some regarding word of mouth from drunken men who don’t know where they are anyway.” Shinta paused, unsure if he should express whether he believed it or not. Regardless it wasn’t as if the captain asked for his opinion anyway. “Red eyes looking out from the dark, moaning and screaming. Most of the men brush it off, but there are some who believe it and won’t go out past sunset. Some men will tell exaggerated tales of it to the others to try and get attention.”

Saito made himself comfortable in his own room, leaving the soldier waiting and listening to his answer. “I see, so you are under Tani Sanjuro.” That would explain why the soldier didn’t seem very familiar too him.

“Sit down.” Saito instructed. Ordinarily he’d have asked the Captain to join him while he questioned the soldier in his division, but the soldier would have to be part of the division in which the Captain wasn’t aware of the Fury Corps. “I have some questions I’d like to ask you, but you must understand that what is said in this room stays in this room.”

He did as he was instructed and sat down in front of the captain. He tried to calm himself down from his racing pulse that threatened to burst his heart out of his chest. It was a bit odd being in one of the captain’s own personal rooms, but he didn’t dare speak out of place again and question it. It certainly wasn’t his place to question anything Saito did or said.

“Of course, I understand.” Shinta frowned while he nodded. It was best to just listen and answer whatever questions came as honestly as he could. It wasn’t as if he knew a lot, but what he did know was more than he should.

“Of course. Half a street over is where you’ll find a clothing shop. Thanks for the ribbon, by the way!”

Izumi chirped, lips split in a wide smile. Although her directions were a little vague, the location of the store she was speaking of was very obvious. If he had trouble finding it, she would most likely laugh.

As seemingly vague as the directions were, he probably would’ve stumbled upon it anyway. Not to mention the whole reason he seemed to be going is because she didn’t seem to like his outfit. He let out a soft sigh and shook his head.

“You are welcome. I’ll make my way over there and check it out then.”

“Not far.” Saito replied, as he started to lead him to his room. He couldn’t be sure who would be able to hear them outside, but at least he knew he could talk without restraint there. Once he had gathered the information on what the soldiers were suspecting, then he could give the full report to the Vice Commander.

“What’s your name and which division do you belong too?” Saito questioned, as he arrived outside his room door. “Come in. We will be able to talk more freely here.” He noted that the soldier was a little weary of what the invitation would lead too, but made little effort to reassure him and kept his usual stern expression that he wore as a mask to his feelings.

As they walked to where Saito was leading them, Shinta couldn’t help but feel the ball of dread in his stomach grow larger. He could scarcely imagine what else the captain would want to talk about other than perhaps to punish him or maybe even question him further about what he overheard. Either way did no bode well in his mind.

Shinta hesitated only for a moment before doing as he was told and stepping into the room behind him. He answered the captain’s question once he was inside. “My name is Odakuri Shinta, sir. I belong to the Seventh Division.”

Keito’s eyes focused on his brother, a seriousness in them he rarely possessed. “I understand your job is important, and I really want to believe you’ll rest, but I also know even the great Shinsengumi would take you out of commission for such an injury. If need be, I’ll go talk to them myself.”

He wrung out a wet cloth and placed it on his brother’s forehead. “I know I seem unreasonable, and I know this is getting in the way of your life, but I’ve been searching nonstop for you for so many years, teetering between hope and despair, praying to whoever would listen that you were still alive after all this time. You finally reappeared in my life, and you almost leave just as quickly again. I just…”

The only thing he could do was trail off as he tried to control his shakiness. Rarely was he so emotional, but on this night his greatest wish and greatest fear were both realized at once.

Shinta was surprised by his brother’s sudden conviction and he found that he couldn’t help but smile. He certainly was stubborn, but that wasn’t a bad thing. Keito had to also understand that Shinta was looking for him as well. “Keito, I can say this confidently... I cannot and will not die from this.You must realize that you weren’t the only one searching.” 

He sat up a little straighter, gripping his side a wincing a little as he did so. “I joined the Shinsengumi not just to be with Father, but also to be able to go to new places and search for you as well. To be able to provide for my family, even if it’s just us two now.”

Saito could tell that the soldier had fully understood what he was saying and he showed this with his words. In reply he gave in a short nod and started to think what steps he should do next to prevent other soldiers catching on more than they already had.

Perhaps he should take this opportunity and ask the soldier a few questions, but he would first need to go somewhere where he could speak more freely. At this time, a few soldiers would still be hanging around so it would be better for them to go somewhere outside where he could easily see people coming or to a private room. “Would you mind accompanying me for a bit?”

Shinta was both relieved and also anxious as the captain began walking away from him. He hoped that perhaps Saito might just forget that it ever happened and perhaps forgive him for misspeaking. Just as he thought this might happen, he heard his voice over his own racing thoughts.

With a frown, Shinta thought through his choices. It would hardly do to reject his offer. It would definitely look bad even if he didn’t just get in trouble. Shinta had wanted to be noticed by the captains, but not like this, that was certain. With a short nod, Shinta made up his mind, “Of course, where would you have us go?”
