I honestly strongly lean towards Option 1, and I believe this refined vocabulary definitely comes from his early childhood before his time in the Port Mafia.
If someone is born into harsh street life from day one, they naturally lack basic social etiquette because no one was there to teach them how to be polite. Typically, people raised in such environments become overly aggressive, violent, and selfish out of pure survival they focus strictly on themselves. But Akutagawa was never like that. Even during the hardest times, he doesn't resort to heavy vulgarity or barbaric behavior.
His silence back in the slums came off as composure and maturity. Instead of acting selfishlywhich he easily could have done by keeping resources just for himself he focused entirely on working, securing a safe place, and providing food for Gin and the others. That is a truly noble act, not the mindset of someone who only knows street survival.
All of this leads me to believe he originally belonged to a wealthy, prestigious family where he received proper early education and learned how to speak articulately. He internalized those mannerisms, and later on, after taking Gin and fleeing to the slums, those early-ingrained manners and nobility stayed with him
A Sweet Spring Breez AKUHIGU
The dimly lit hallway of the Port Mafia building was dead silent. Higuchi was completing her late-night rounds when she spotted a familiar, slender figure leaning heavily against the wall near the lounge.
It was Akutagawa.
Her breath caught in her throat. Instantly, her inner alarm system went wild a chaotic mix of sheer panic, intense worry, and overwhelming devotion.
"Akutagawa-senpai?!" She practically scrambled toward himl.
As she stepped closer, she caught the unmistakable scent of alcohol... He had been drinking. He who almost never touches a drop was visibly intoxicated.
Panicked, but secretly hyperventilating with joy, she gently guided him to a plush leather sofa nearby, nearly melting on the spot just from the contact. As soon as he sat back, Higuchi's inner monologue erupted into pure chaos.
Higuchi's Brain: IS THIS A DREAM?! A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?! He's vulnerable! He's relaxed! Should I hold his hand?! Should I lean in?! Oh god, can I kiss him?! The room is completely empty... just the two of us! What if I lock the door like that hotel room incident?! No, no, calm down Higuchi! But... opportunity only knocks once!!
Heat rushed to her cheeks. She lowered her gaze, unable to steady her breathing as her heart pounded against her ribs like a sledgehammer She leaned in slightly, trembling from head to toe, her fingers ...hovering just inches from his collar, trapped between overwhelming passion and suffocating shyness.
Suddenly, Akutagawa slowly turned his head toward her. His usually sharp gaze had softened under the haze of alcohol. A faint smile played at the corner of his lips as he took in her flustered expression
"Are you waiting to hear 'I love you'?" he murmured softly.
For a split second, her eyes became a mirror of everything she had spent years trying to hide-adoration, longing... and love. Outwardly, she stood frozen; inwardly, her soul was screaming, doing backflips of absolute bliss.
Before she could squeeze out a single word, Akutagawa continued, his voice surprisingly smooth, warm, and poetic:
"Look at you, Higuchi... always trying to gather the fruit before it ripens. Why force the season? Even the sweetest fruit turns bitter when plucked too soon."
(He murmurs softly, a faint, dazed smile touching his lips as his eyelids droop.)
"Why rush the hour? Even the sweetest things turn bitter when torn from time too soon."
For a split second, love triumphed over embarrassment
"So... soon?!" she gasped out, her voice squeaking hopelessly. "Does that mean... you actually love me, Senpai?!"
(Akutagawa leaned his head back against the leather sofa, looking down at her with a gentle, half-intoxicated haze in his eyes. He reached out slowly, his slender fingers weaving gently through her golden hair.)
Akutagawa:
"Neither you nor I can command such things."
(His hand reaches out with slow, uncharacteristic. warmth, fingers trailing along her cheek.)
"It is the heart that dictates its own tides, Higuchi. We are merely bound to follow where it leads."
(Higuchi completely short-circuited. Overwhelmed by the sheer intimacy of his words, she threw herself onto his chest, burying her burning face into his coat and clinging to him as if she'd disappear if she let go.)
Akutagawa: (Resting his hand over her head with a faint, peaceful smile)
"So let us truly understand one another before we lose ourselves in passion After the cold of winter, only the warmth of spring remains. And I promise you... once I say 'I love you', your heart will never tire of hearing it."
and yah he so Poetic
The Silent Fracture
Later that afternoon, Akutagawa stood by the window overlooking the gray cityscape, his arms crossed over his chest. The silence of his office should have allowed him to focus on the reports before him, yet his thoughts refused to cooperate. Against his own will, his mind wandered back to Higuchi's hopelessly flustered face from earlier that morning. A quiet scoff escaped his lips.
Foolish woman, he thought bitterly Reckless. Incapable of thinking before throwing herself into danger. She's nothing but an endless nuisance... always creating more work for me His eyes narrowed slightly. ".And yet she never leaves."
Before he could dwell on the thought any longer, the heavy doors burst open with a deafening crash. A Port Mafia subordinate stumbled inside, breathing heavily, his face drained of color. "Akutagawa-sama!" Akutagawa barely spared him a glance. "What is it?" "It's... Higuchi-san..." His expression remained perfectly calm. "If she failed another routine mission, deal with it yourself." "N-No, sir!" the subordinate stammered, his voice shaking. "She was ambushed during the western district patrol! She pushed the others out of the blast radius and took the explosion herself. She's been rushed to the Intensive Care Unit... The doctors say..." His voice faltered. "...they're not sure she'll survive."
For a brief moment, the world fell completely silent. The report slipped from Akutagawa's hand and drifted soundlessly onto the floor. Without warning, he closed the distance between them in an instant, seizing the subordinate by the collar with enough force to make the man gasp. "Where?" The single word came out low and sharp, carrying an intensity the subordinate had never heard before. "W-Which hospital?" His grip tightened. "...Answer me." Only then did Akutagawa notice it. His hand... was trembling. He released the man without another word and disappeared from the office before anyone could react.
Minutes later, the sterile hallway outside the Intensive Care Unit was filled with nothing but the rhythmic beeping of medical monitors. Akutagawa stood motionless before the glass window, his breathing unusually uneven as his eyes searched the room beyond. There she was lying perfectly still beneath stark white sheets, bandages wrapped around nearly every visible part of her body. Tubes and wires disappeared beneath the blanket while machines breathed in her place, each mechanical pulse reminding him just how fragile a human life truly was. For the first time, she wasn't smiling. She wasn't calling his name. She wasn't following a step behind him. She was simply... silent.
A doctor stepped out of the room, quietly removing his gloves. He glanced toward Akutagawa before asking in a calm voice, "Are you family?" Akutagawa remained silent. The words refused to come. He wasn't. He had no right to claim he was. "...I'm her superior," he answered at last. The doctor gave a slow nod before looking back through the glass. "Before she lost consciousness..." he said quietly, "...she kept repeating one name." Akutagawa's eyes lifted. "...Whose?" The doctor's gaze met his. "...Yours."
The doctor walked away, leaving nothing behind but silence.
Akutagawa slowly lifted a hand, resting it against the cold glass that separated them. His chest tightened with a pain unlike anything Rashomon had ever failed to shield him from. It wasn't physical. It was something far deeper... something he had spent years refusing to acknowledge. A warm drop slid down his cheek. His brows knit together almost imperceptibly. Another followed. Only then did he realize... he was crying. The tears fell silently, one after another, long before his mind could understand why.
"...Don't." The word escaped his lips as little more than a whisper. "...Don't leave." His forehead came to rest against the glass. For years, he had dismissed her devotion as nothing more than an annoyance. For years, he had convinced himself she was simply another subordinate. But standing there, watching her fragile body fight for every breath, every excuse he had ever made crumbled into dust. The thought of a world without Higuchi was suddenly unbearable. And for the first time in his life, Ryunosuke Akutagawa was terrified of losing her.
Uhggg I don't blame them at all. Anyone who lays eyes on Akutagawa instantly develops the uncontrollable urge to trail after him.His charisma is no joke.
Uhggg I don't blame them at all. Anyone who lays eyes on Akutagawa instantly develops the uncontrollable urge to trail after him.His charisma is no joke.
I have a headcanon that feels so close to being canon. Sometimes I imagine Higuchi smoking out of sheer exhaustion, but I lean more towards her vaping mostly because it’s faster and comes in nice scents, not that gross 'manly' cigarette smell. Of course, she’d only do it when she’s completely alone at home, opening her bedroom window while her sister is fast asleep without her sister noticing
I don’t know if you’ve noticed this but I literally can't write a short post I always find myself over-explaining going way too deep into details, and writing entire essays. It makes me worried that people will perceive me as purely analytical, stiff, and overly serious someone who can’t give a simple answer without a million details.
Trust me, that's not who I am in real life! I even catch myself criticizing how overly long most my posts are yet every time I try to write something short, I end up expanding it and worse, I actually like how it turned out! Ugh, even this explanation... I'm terrified I'm making it too long again!
Oh dream, would it really hurt you to come true?
It is SO frustrating! Why are there no figures for Higuchi?! Honestly, if she were a guy, I'm 100% sure her popularity would be through the roof with a million fan arts, and everyone would be obsessed with shipping her with Ako. They’d all be saying, "Wow, what a fun, emotional, insanely good toxic dynamic!"
But no, there’s nothing just because she’s a girl. Ugh, she has so much potential! For example if her default outfit which I personally find way too basic doesn't cut it pink suits her so well 🥹 especially with her bright features, her eyes shimmering with love and of course her gun there's no escaping the gun she looks incredible with it! It would definitely sell like crazy pink fans are everywhere!
I just realized I am madly in love with her brown eyes in particular... my beloved.
I want to be even more demanding! Her Nendoroid box needsto come with 3 different types of guns in different colors plus 3 face:
(obviously the Akutagawa effect).
A flustered/nervous face because my beloved is so emotional and the idiots around her constantly stress her outor maybe she just gets flustered seeing her crush, Aku(and honestly who can blame her?)I'm already obsessed with him through the screen if I saw him in real life I'd lose my mind
An angry/fierce face because like it or not she’s Port Mafia! She’s strong, intimidating, has a killer sharp glare, drops cold threats, and could easily take you down with five different weapons if she wanted to.
YOU ARE A KEY COMBAT PERSONNEL
Believe me, if she appeared more, we’d encounter even bolder insults stronger threats, and dangerous behavior because Higuchi isn't playing when it comes to her master.
I think Beast Akutagawa could kill Dazai, I think he would rip him apart limb by limb, I think he would return to the Agency drenched in blood, and I think Kunikida would wordlessly clean it off for him.
“In that case... even if this body is smashed into pieces... I will have no regrets.“
I need more Higuchi ichiyo gacha reactions. PERIOD.
huzzah!!!!
Character Analysis: Ichiyō Higuchi
The Unsuitable Path of Loyalty and Resilience Introduction: The Literary Foundatio
In Bungou Stray Dogs, Chapter 14 takes its title"An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (彼女には向かない職業) directly from the famous 1972 detective novel of the same name by British author P. D. James, often dubbed the "Queen of Crime Fiction."
In the novel, Cordelia Gray a young woman possessing immense emotional resilience despite her inner psychological vulnerability, finds herself forced to navigate a harsh, male dominated world after the death of her partner, Bernie. Society, the police, and authority figures constantly deem her profession as "unsuitable" for a woman. Yet, through her sharp intelligence, sheer determination, and willingness to embrace a bleak path, Cordelia proves them wrong.
Kafka Asagiri masterfully bridges this exact literary premise to mirror Ichiyō Higuchi, framing her character through the tragic and resolute lens of Cordelia Gray.
Higuchi's Persona: Between Ruthlessness and Vulnerability
At first glance, Higuchi presents herself as a cold, ruthless, and unwavering member of the Port Mafia. Under the command of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, she acts as his assistant and personal bodyguard, showing zero hesitation in wielding firearms or eliminating enemies to protect the organization's interests.
However, beneath this formidable exterior lies a deeply human struggle:
The "Unsuitable" Status: When Akutagawa is hospitalized, Boss Mori notes that Higuchi is fundamentally "unsuitable" for the brutal reality of the Port Mafia. Behind her harsh mask, she is easily flustered, self-doubting, and hesitant—frequently contemplating leaving the organization despite the lethal consequences deserters face.
Lack of Respect: Because her subordinates recognize her internal conflict, they rarely offer her genuine respect, obeying her commands primarily out of terror for Akutagawa’s wrath. Her impulsive devotion often drives her to disobey direct orders, resorting to drastic measures to protect her senior.
Earning Her Place:Despite her flaws and the overwhelming pressure, Higuchi's earnest, unwavering nature eventually earns her the respect of the *Black Lizard* squad. She demonstrates extraordinary courage and loyalty, bearing her burdens to this day with a clear awareness of the Port Mafia's role in protecting Yokohama.
The Parallels: Cordelia Gray & Ichiyō Higuchi
"...she was voluntarily embracing his ill-luck. She certainly never saw herself as powerful enough to change it."
P.D. James, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman
This single line from P. D. James’s novel captures the emotional core of Higuchi's devotion to Akutagawa:
1Voluntarily Embracing Suffering: Much like Cordelia chooses to bind her fate to a troubled, unlucky partner, Higuchi voluntarily steps into the harsh, violent underworld of the Port Mafia. She chooses to stand beside Akutagawa a man shrouded in harshness and darkness fully knowing the emotional and physical toll it takes on her.
Accepting Powerlessness with Absolute Resolve: Higuchi is fully aware that she is an "ordinary" human lacking a supernatural Ability (*Inō*). She knows she cannot change Akutagawa's dark nature or force him to acknowledge her, yet she willingly accepts her limitations and fights with everything she has relying on her skill with firearms and absolute loyalty to survive in a world of monsters.
Beyond character traits and psychological themes, Asagiri and the character designer went step further by directly reflecting Cordelia Gray’s visual identity onto Ichiyō Higuchi
Looking at the Japanese book cover for An Unsuitable Job for a Woman the resemblance is uncanny:
The Silhouette & Outfit: The sleek, minimalist black suit that Higuchi wears which always stood out for its simplicity compared to the elaborate designs of other Port Mafia members is a literal homage to Cordelia’s iconic cover look.
The Hair & Stance: The short blonde haircut, the posture, and even the precise, calculated way she holds her handgun are virtually a copy-paste of Cordelia Gray’s visual representation.
It finally answers the long standing question of why Higuchi's character design was kept so simple in a world full of flamboyant outfits. However, one small grievance remains for Asagiri: Why skip the pearl necklace? Higuchi’s beauty and devotion definitely deserved that touch of elegance to complete the look!
Final Thoughts: What Lies Ahead for Higuchi?
I’ve decided to read the novel (An Unsuitable Job for a Woman) in its entirety to observe Cordelia’s character growth and her ultimate trajectory. Naturally, this makes me wonder: Could Cordelia’s journey offer us a subtle glimpse into Higuchi’s future in Bungou Stray Dogs?
While Asagiri might not follow P.D. James’s narrative to the letter often choosing to adapt foundational themes while forging his own twists it remains an exciting parallel to explore. Whether Asagiri relies on the novel as a blueprint for Higuchi's future development or has a completely unexpected path hidden for her, one thing is certain:
Just as Cordelia Gray proved that an "unsuitable" job could become her greatest triumph, I truly hope to see Higuchi step into the spotlight once more, proving her worth and commanding the respect she so deeply deserves
Bonus Insight: Cordelia Gray’s Broader Literary Impact
Did you know that Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan, also paid tribute to Cordelia Gray by featuring her in the "Detective Picture Book" of Volume 28?
This further proves just how influential Cordelia Gray is within the mystery and detective fiction genre. Her legacy as a pioneering female detective is undeniable. The fact that Kafka Asagiri chose to base Ichiyō Higuchi on such a rich, historically significant character is proof that Higuchi holds immense untapped potential. If Asagiri gives her the spotlight she deserves, her trajectory in Bungou Stray Dogs could be truly extraordinary.
Akutagawa’s Tragedy: The Misunderstood Language of Salvation in BSD BEAST
Akutagawa was never driven by a mere thirst for blood or a twisted obsession with revenge over his sister never. That is precisely the most heartbreaking aspect of his character. In his mind, the violence and the destruction of the Port Mafia were never the ultimate goals; they were simply the "inevitable means" to reach her.
If we dive deeper into his psyche, two main reasons explain why he appeared so monstrous in Gin’s eyes:
. His Distorted Concept of "Salvation"
Having survived the slums where only the ruthless endure, Akutagawa learned that the world does not negotiate. It doesn't understand the language of pleas or dialogue. In his reality, walking up to the Mafia and peacefully asking, "Please give me my sister back," would only result in immediate death. Thus, his only logical blueprint for protecting her was the absolute eradication of every threat surrounding her. To him, tearing down the Mafia from the top floor down was the only way to guarantee Gin’s absolute freedom so she wouldn't remain a target for the rest of her life.
. The Clash of Instincts: The Attacker vs. The Defender
Akutagawa (Hyper-Aggression): Believes that the best defense is a devastating offense crushing the enemy entirely before they can strike.
Gin (Self-Sacrificial Retreat): Believes that protection means enduring the dark, fading into the shadows, and sacrificing oneself to avoid conflict.
Consequently, when Gin witnessed him fighting like a feral beast and attempting to kill everyone in his path (like his confrontation with Atsushi), she perceived it as him yielding to his inherently violent nature and selfish goals. But the devastating truth is that every drop of blood he spilled, and every agonizing step he took toward the top floor, was fueled by the desperation of a broken child trying to reclaim his sister. He simply possessed no tools other than his "fangs" to express that desperate pursuit.
The sheer shock and terror etched into his eyes when she accused him of not caring about her was the ultimate proof. He was utterly shattered because the only person he was burning the world down for, believed he was doing it simply because he loved the fire.
The Nature of Akutagawa’s Love
Akutagawa’s love for Gin is not gentle, nor is it healthy but it is profoundly pure and absolute. It is a "Survivalist's Love." In a cruel universe that stripped him of everything, Gin is his only anchor to humanity, the only proof that he was once a vulnerable human boy and not just a beast. His love doesn't know how to comfort or hold hands; it only knows how to shield and destroy. It is the tragic love of a guardian who would gladly become a monster and damn his own soul to hell, just to ensure that the one person he loves can walk in the light.
BUNGO STRAY DOGS WAN! 2 - EP4 ED
I actually love deep analysis, character studies, and philosophical takes. Whether it’s psychological, logical, or just a personal interpretation, I’m usually all for it. In fact, I make analysis posts myself and will keep doing so! But there is a limit to exaggeration, and overdoing it ruins the point even if it seems somewhat logical.
Taking a basic, instinctive moment like a brother desperate to save his sister and bring her back and trying so hard to label it as 'objectification' or 'possession' feels so forced. Even when a character actually has dark or vengeful traits, people often skip reasonable descriptions and jump straight to the most extreme, exaggerated terms possibleto the point where you’re like, 'Okay, he’s dark, but it’s really not that extreme!'
This isn't just about my favorite characters either; I've seen these over exaggerations applied to many other characters as well. It feels like people are constantly digging for heavy, complex jargon just to sound sophisticated, when the reality is so much simpler and grounded in basic human nature. You can analyze a character deeply without making things unnecessarily complex
Higuchi: Akutagawa, wake up!
Akutagawa, half-asleep: Five more minutes…
Tachihara: You’ve been in a coma for two years!
Akutagawa: …
Akutagawa: Okay, two more minutes…
