“Miles Davis’ last session for Blue Note was a sublime quartet session on March 6, 1954 with Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Art Blakey. Decade after decade with every change in style, Miles Davis was always the epitome of cool. It had to do with his artistic evolution, his taste in clothing, and his ability to grow. But looking at Francis Wolff’s images of Miles from his Blue Note sessions, Miles’ sense of cool emanated from his very essence. Regardless of the fashions that he wore in any given era, his body language exuded pure cool. This image is a classic example as Miles, lost in thought, drapes himself across a chair with his trumpet in his lap and a cigarette of some sort in his right hand." -- Michael Cuscuna.
