you haven’t changed a damn bit, he says. emrys still has a smile like wolf teeth, is what he means. and for all the punches and insults they’d thrown in the fog — all the bloody noses and bullshit — it felt bizarre to be sitting across from him now. felt like a bit of a joke, after everything, to put himself together for emrys, of all people's benefit. sure, he could blame nea for this mess. but he had been the one who had agreed, when they both knew damn well where this was going. at least with emrys, he didn't have to worry about feelings getting involved.
jake tilts his head with an unimpressed look; ❝ are you regretting this yet? ❞ he asks. eyes flick up to emrys' face, and brow furrows. emrys had cleaned up — but jake wasn't about to tell him so. he exhales, leaning on a palm with a thin smile; ❝ … drinks would have been less painful, you know. or did you bring me flowers, too? ❞
jake scoffs at emrys' comment; ❝ yeah, well. i was pretty bad at this lifestyle before, too. ❞ maybe he had changed more than most. no longer sparking with fissures of blight, no longer powered by dead nerves and adrenaline alone every day, he felt fallible, ordinary, and tired. when he'd finally stepped out of the fog, scar tissue had formed where corruption had been. and when he'd gotten sick of looking at that in the mirror, he'd gotten most of them sprawled over in tattoos. and he doesn't miss the blood — so much as feel like it's still all over him, impossible to scrub clean. yeah, he thought, 'worse' was fair enough.
jake shrugs and ducks his gaze to the table, suddenly very aware of emrys' eyes on him. he picks at his sleeve absently. this was a stupid idea. he had known. surely they had both known. ❝ … your boyfriend isn't going to kill me, is he? ❞ jake ventures, shooting him a pointed, accusing look. though, in fairness, he had seen saki a couple days ago at the bar, and he hadn't seemed terribly interested in ending his life, now that they were all 'free'.
