Have I ever told you, how much of a crime Starscream’s redesign is in RiD?
Not only is he the only one whose design they changed this radically, it also goes totally against his character!
In Prime he is absolutely content with his looks and the way he is. When Knockout wants to give him a BFG, he is outright offended! He tells Megatron that it’s his mind he considers his best weapon without being bitter about it.
Bee says, it’s Starscream’s old body style. And I read theories about Starscream being forced to accept a smaller, weaker body by Megatron’s demands. But the way he acts in Prime, it rather seems like he changed his body out of his own volition. He wanted to look different (Not that I take Prime Starscream ever looking G1-ish as canon…).
When he answers Bee, he doesn’t even say, he wanted to be stronger. He says, he wanted to LOOK stronger. So all the blind people finally see his strength. The makers of the show, the audience, other Decepticons, the stupid Autobots… When he has this body, people are far more accepting of him.
Kinda reminds me of movie scenes where trans people regress to their assigned gender to make their family/surroundings happy.
You know, how I would have changed his RiD cameo?
First and foremost, he has his Prime body. Secondly, when he is using the Minicons, then his body changes like surprise!! It gets all the G1-ness and the bulk uncanny fans want, who see Starscream as this aggressively heterosexual, cisgender icon (Yeah, I don’t get it either…).
Of course the Autobots beat him and the power-up breaks apart and reveals his normal body again. Starscream is all depressed and stuff, but the Autobots being all hero-y say: “You don’t need to be like Megatron to be accepted/taken seriously/and so on. Stop hurting people. Especially yourself.”
He isn’t in the best of moods since his quest for revenge was put on hold, but realizing that the Autobots indeed accept him as who he is, puts a small smile on his face…
