This is Kamala Harris. District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004-2011. She put a lot of dudes in jail while she was the DA. When developers moved into San Francisco around the turn of the century, they generated affluent tenants from across the country in their newly built condominiums in renowned neighborhoods like the Fillmore, and the Mission District. Problem was, these folks moving in; were from rural or isolated parts of America; mostly from the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. Where they weren't used to seeing young people of color. So when they moved in, they complained to the landlords and building owner of Black and Brown people hanging out, mostly men; in the neighborhood they grew up in. They referred to them as sketchy, or intimidating. So they couldn't just get them off the streets by simply hanging out in front of their homes. So they went to the District Attorney's office and complained of losing money. So the City of San Francisco created a new law already in place in a couple other major cities (I.e., Los Angeles) called "Gang Injunctions." This prevented mostly young men; Black or Brown (Latino, and even Arabs) from hanging out in groups of 4 or more. If caught, your name goes on the list and if the next time you're caught you go to jail. Even if you're not a gang member. This helped with the process of gentrification and getting rid of the "undesirables." As a token for her generous deed, the developers came through with their promise of donating funds for her campaign run for senate.
