I think this is the first Valentine’s Day since I was thirteen that I haven’t had a boyfriend. I honestly didn’t even realize it was so soon. I’ve been too caught up with school.
Well hey, this is the first I haven’t had a girlfriend so we’re in the same boat, I’ll drink to that. Things just seem like they speed up so much after January- who would have thought we returned from break just a while back huh?

Solomon reached in just about 10 minutes, parking his car in a nearby empty space as he quickly made his way towards Poppy’s house, politely knocking on her door as he waited for her to open the door. When no one tended to it, he tried the handle and, when the door opened, he hesitated only slightly before letting himself in and following the sound of Ayda crying to Poppy’s room. He knew, at some level, they could never have gotten back what they used to have but her words had hurt him and they affected him far more than he was willing to let on.
Which was just as well because, when he knocked on Poppy’s bedroom door before walking in, she looked like she was exhausted as she tried to rock a still screaming Ayda to sleep. He focused his attention on Ayda rather than Poppy and, keeping his eyes on his daughter finally spoke up,
“I’ll take her off your hands for a bit” He said in the same, short tone he’d used with her before extending his hands to take Ayda from her

P: "Hurry." She told him, feeling her chest tighten as she had to heave in for air.
S: "Bye" He said shortly before, as an afterthought, adding "I'll be there" as he cut the phone and started the car, nearly going over the speed limit as he rushed to Poppy's house
call - sol
P: She wanted to cry now. Voice shaking with the effort of holding back her tears, she held the phone closer to Ayda before she spoke again. "Can you not /hear/ your daughter screaming?"
S: "I didn't say I wasn't coming. I'm already on my way" Solomon said, the sound of the door to his house shutting behind him loud and clear as he got the car out

P: "Solomon.." Her tone was pleading. She didn't want to talk about it, she just needed him to show up for his daughter.
S: "Fine, I just don't want there to be any incidents like last time" He said in a short, clipped tone. She'd made it very clear last time that they were only trying to keep up an arrangement for Ayda's sake
call - sol
P: With Ayda screaming, it was hard to talk. Poppy was so overwhelmed, and she had no idea but to say besides "I need you. Please. Come over.."
S: Solomon could hear Ayda screaming and, at Poppy's words he paused for a long moment before answering "... Are you sure about that?"
call - sol
P: -ringing-
S: Solomon stared at the caller ID before, just as it was about to cut off of it's own accord, he picked up. "Hello?"
“Oh? How about Sparky?” She grinned playfully as she placed a hand on her shoulder and nudged him slightly. “Small fires are a step down for Mr. Scandal anyway.” Mia turned her body with the music and started to get more into the beat, the girl almost losing herself in the song.
“I can live with Sparky- let’s just never let my dad hear about that nickname or I’m pretty sure he’ll put two and two together and toss me in jail for a night or two for arson. Even if it wasn’t intentional” He laughed, moving along to the song with Mia, finding it easy to keep up with the beat “You’re not bad at this”
Writing wishes with sparklers? Scout had never heard of anything like it. Of course her childhood had never been normal. It was sad. It was moments she would never get back, and she had always been a little embarrassed when she didn’t know common childhood traditions, “Writing wishes with sparklers? What if it’s a long wish?”
“Well, if it’s lengthy then you better start with a fresh one” Solomon said brightly as he waited for both sparklers in his hands to slowly die out before he cleared the area of their ashes to the best of his ability and, taking out two more, handed her one and held up the cigarette butt “What do you say?”
“I’ll even pay you for the labor. No matter how much you like to do it you should still be reimbursed for your time too.” Pat laughed along with Solomon before the next question caught his attention, his ears perking up slightly. “Ah so we can alert the world of your experiments. I like the idea. Let’s do it.”
“And that is greatly appreciated” Solomon said, taking an exaggeratedly gracious bow as he moved the used firecracker from the open space they were in and walked over to where he’d stashed the other firecrackers to get a sizable blue one that he propped up against a wooden frame he’d gotten specially for the firecracker to aim it upwards and, flashing a thumbs up at the younger boy, repeated the process.
It took a longer time considering the firecracker was much larger and needed a proper flame to light it but, with a good couple minutes of focus, Solomon finally saw the flame catch on from the cigarette butt just as he moved out the way and the wooden frame slipped a little from the momentum of the pyrotechnic shooting upwards, angling the firecracker slightly lower than intended as it burst into brilliant blue sparks right beside a building- which, thankfully, was safe making Solomon sigh in relief. What the ginger didn’t anticipate however was when some of the sparks fell on a tree nearby and started a small spark as he scrambled to get up and, grabbing Pat’s arm, dragging him away from the scene with him.

Poppy didn’t know what she wanted in that moment. Her heart was pounding in her chest, chasing something she wasn’t even sure was there. It was those eyes, those damned eyes, that made everything just so confusing for Poppy. Maybe it was as she had accused him- transference out of the need to feel close to the father of her baby. It didn’t feel like transference though, it felt real. Tangible. Like whatever was between them could grasped if she reached out to it. Did she want to touch it though? Or did she want to ignore it and hope it goes away?Â
She didn’t need to figure it out though. Ayda. Hearing the cries, Poppy pulled back. The moment passed, and reality of it all was taking over. “I- I’ll get her.” She got up as quickly as she could, breathing out and pushing what had just almost happened from her mind.Â
As soon as Poppy pulled away Solomon felt as if he’d just been slapped across the face, the way she scrambled to get up and dashed off to pacify Ayda sending him reeling in the worst of ways as he cleared his throat, green eyes cast downwards before he decided to get up and pause the VCR, cleaning up the area around the VCR as he tried to distract himself when Poppy got back.
“Um... if you want I could drop you back home” He offered when he heard her footsteps even though he knew all too well that she’d try find a way to politely decline his offer

a VCR? God. Poppy shook her head slightly, a smile on her lips as she settled into the couch. He knew she loved all things old. That she still had a Polaroid camera because she loved the tactile experience of actually having the photos. That she wouldn’t get rid of her CD’s. Settling into his arm, Poppy breathed out. This was perfect. After a few moments of letting the movie play, she couldn’t help but look up at Solomon. His lopsided smile, dimples, his eyes. She knew them so well, but not just because she knew him, but she looked into those eyes every night in her daughter. It was impossible to look at him and not feel.. something.Â
Solomon was happy when she settled into his arm, the two quietly enjoying the movie and, despite the sound coming from the VCR, it was somehow quiet between them. An atmosphere heavy with words unspoken sort of quiet that was somehow gentle at the same time and, just as Solomon allowed himself to glance down at Poppy, he was surprised to see her looking up at him and, suddenly, the movie didn’t seem to matter so much.
“Poppy...” He said softly, trailing off as his eyes never left hers, his free hand going to tuck a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear “I know it’s hard but I... sorry” He said softly and suddenly the distance between the two was only a couple inches apart and, if Solomon spoke, his lips might have brushed Poppy’s when Ayda’s crying jolted the two back to reality as he blinked at Poppy in surprise
“I plan on booking right now. I’m penciling you in to be in Burlington, Texas when the fourth rolls around.” Pat shook his head before plopping down on the grass, the cold seeping into his clothes and chilling his bones. “What else you got up your sleeve, Firecracker?”
“I’m down for that just reimburse me for the firecrackers is my only request- considering I’ll be giving up running for office for my newfound career, my father is definitely going to disown me” He laughed before raising his brows at Patrick with a smile “Do you even have to ask? Ever lit up those huge ones that everyone can see for a couple miles? That’s what we’re trying next”

Poppy’s eyes lit up at that. He knew her so well. How could he not? He was one of her closest friends. “That’s actually perfect.” She confirmed, grin on her features. “If we are lucky, we might get through a whole movie before the munchkin wakes up screaming.” Holding out her hand to him, she waited for him to take it. “Which TV is this marathon happening on? Lead the way.”Â
“I know; I’ll take my awards now” He grinned, happy to see her excited about the prospect. Honestly, he’d thought it up particularly because he knew Poppy would love the idea and it’d make her happy as he took her hand and led her towards the living room where he sat her down on the sofa, producing a VCR tape and giving her a mischievous look “TV channels? Please, we’re going old school. Luckily I still remember how to work the VCR and the tapes and I got all the movies necessary for the perfect Christmas in it so just sit back and enjoy” He smiled as he gently pushed the tape into the VCR and took a seat beside Poppy, instinctively putting his arm around her shoulders as they did in old times
“Well then what are we waiting for, Mr. Scandal?” Holding her hand out, she took his in her own and made her way to the dance floor. Soon she was moving to the best of the music currently playing. Usually at this point Mia would be flirting up a storm and move closer to him the man had already admitted he was a father and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go there. So she kept her distance. ”Caused any headlines lately?
“I think we’re going to have to find me a better nickname...” Solomon muttered as Mia led him to the dance floor and began moving along to the beat of the song, Solomon keeping up and finding it rather fun as he laughed at her question “Well, recently I was trying out an experiment involving a lit cigarette and fireworks and, where it was going great, the last one might have hit a tree and caused a small fire”
Wow, yea you would be a favorite in the name of scandal, wouldn’t you? It’s not the worse thing that could happen though. So you weren’t there for the birth or anything?
Yeah... my father always says I’m the reason for his premature balding because of that [ At Mia’s next words, Solomon hesitated a little before answering her, mainly because he was ashamed ] Um... no. No I wasn’t
