âWhen you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your GodâŠ.â
â Leviticus 19:9-10
I know farmers that do this, I used to live in an area where fruit trees grew, on the road we lived, the trees on the edge by the road were always left for the neighbors and travelers to pick, and when my mom taught me how to make jam, we went to buy peaches from the neighbors stand, when he found out why, he refused to sell, but invited us to pick the freshly fallen fruit from his orchard, to take as much as we wanted by the bucket load so it was not wasted and make a mess he had to clean up, as he couldnât sell the ground fallen fruit for health inspector reasons. We made loads and shared it with our neighbors.

Washoe was a chimp who was taught sign language.
One of Washoeâs caretakers was pregnant and missed work for many weeks after she miscarried. Roger Fouts recounts the following situation:
âPeople who should be there for her and arenât are often given the cold shoulderâher way of informing them that sheâs miffed at them. Washoe greeted Kat [the caretaker] in just this way when she finally returned to work with the chimps. Kat made her apologies to Washoe, then decided to tell her the truth, signing âMY BABY DIED.â Washoe stared at her, then looked down. She finally peered into Katâs eyes again and carefully signed âCRYâ, touching her cheek and drawing her finger down the path a tear would make on a human (Chimpanzees donât shed tears). Kat later remarked that one sign told her more about Washoe and her mental capabilities than all her longer, grammatically perfect sentences.â [23]
Washoe herself lost two children; one baby died shortly after birth of a heart defect, the other baby, Sequoyah, died of a staph infection at two months of age.
more about Washoe:
after the death of her children, researchers were determined to have Washoe raise a baby and brought in a ten month chimpanzee named Loulis. one of the caretakers went to Washoeâs enclosure and signed âi have a baby for you.â Washoe became incredibly excited, yelling and swaying from side to side, signing âbabyâ over and over again. then she signed âmy baby.â
the caretaker came back with Loulis, and Washoeâs excitement disappeared entirely. she refused to pick Loulis up, instead signing âbabyâ apathetically; it was clear that the baby she thought she was getting was going to be Sequoyah. eventually Washoe did approach Loulis, and by the next day the two had bonded and from then on she was utterly devoted to him.
*information shamelessly paraphrased from When Elephants Weep by Jeffrey Masson.
Even more interestingly, after Washoe and Loulis bonded, she started teaching him American Sign Language the same way that human parents teach their children language. It only took Loulis eight days to learn his first sign from Washoe, and aside from the seven that his human handlers learned around him, he learned to speak in ASL just as fluently as Washoe and was able to communicate with humans in the same way she could.
now if y'all donât think this is the tightest shit you can get outta my face
I think, in some ways, the fact that this is astounding to us is just proof of how self-centered we are as a species, and it makes me sad. So many animals are so amazing.

Letâs Have Another Bullet Point Story, Courtesy of a Friend
So I have a friend that used to be in the tumblers troupe at the renfaire as a contortionist
We were chatting online and she told me to tell you all this story.
I love Kat dearly
but she forgets that sheâs stupid strong and hypermobile
so one day she throws her back out
bad enough that she needed painkillers and couldnât stand upright
âBut also I needed Tampons and like. Â A Burrito, real bad.â
sheâs flat on her back in her apartment when she decides this
and, in an
impeccable
leap of reasoning, decides
âI canât roll my back forward to sit/stand up like normal.
But I can ARCH my back just fine.
SOÂ
Iâm going to do that and get on my hands and feet in a stomach-in-the-air this-shit-belongs-in-a-horror-movie-type pose,
And amble on down to the 7-11â
âAnd get me that Burritoâ
It is,Â
for context,Â
after midnight in July during a wildfire so itâs hot as satanâs own asshole and the moon is red and shitâs already generally cursed.
Imagineyou are some poor sap working nights at the worldâs deadest 7-11, and you hear the door jangle but you donât see anyoneâs head over the counters.
Whatever.
Except you keep hearing noises like thereâs someone in the next aisle over. Â
Fucking around in the burrito section
Itâs also worth mentioning that Kat
1. sings whatever earworm is currently running through her head when sheâs not paying attention
2. sounds EXACTLY like some kind of creepy child from a horror movie when doing so
tonightâs song is something from veggietales.
DUDE ACTUALLY STANDS HIS GROUND
and/or is really fucking high and isnât sure if heâs tripping balls or notanyway
Kat goes up to pay for her burrito and tampons
She realizes the counter presents something of a challenge, and then demonstrates for me on her kitchen table at 4AM during a different july wildfire,Â
exactlyÂ
how she used the shelves to climb up the counterÂ
like one of the boston robotics beasties
dude stares at her for like, five minutes and says.
âRegisterâs broke.â
âOh No!â Says Kat. âJust Take âem.â âReally?  I can leave cash-you donât have to give me change I donât want you to get in trouble with your manager.â ââŠNah.â âOh!  OK!  Thank you!â âYeah ok bye.â
Shortly after she arrived back at the apartment, she got a text on her phone from the campus security about  "A Suspicious Individualâ at tle 7-11.Â
It took herÂ
FOUR
FUCKINGÂ
YEARS
to realize she was the suspicious individual

While itâs generally true that real siblings donât routinely call each other âbroâ or âsisâ, as certain stripes of popular media would have us believe, there are occasions when siblings may refer to each other as âbrotherâ or âsisterâ in full. Those occasions are when you want to fuck with people, and thereâs a specific Voice you use when you do it. Anyone who has That Kind of sibling relationship can back me up here.
For those wondering what the Voice in question is, there are actually several recognised variants, including (but not limited to):
The eerie singsong âhello, brother/sister~â when you want people to think youâre in some sort of cult
The bombastic, Viking warrior style âwell met, brother/sister!â when you want to give notice that youâre about to do something stupid
The conspicuously formal âyes, dearest brother/sister?â when you want folks to think youâre Up To Somethingâą (but may or may not be planning anything in particular)
The cold, mechanical âgreetings, brother/sisterâ when youâre acting like robots because of a specific in-joke which you will never explain
That specific use of brother or sister when youâre pissed off about something that is secret, but the parents are in the room
Tbh I just go
âHEWWO?!â
you are chaos
Marriage is good and weddings are great but I hate modern wedding culture. You donât need to bankrupt yourself to have a nice wedding. Stop supporting the wedding industry, stop buying outrageously priced engagement rings, stop spending 10k on a dress youâll only ever wear once.
Coming from a professional event planner - weddings are egregiously expensive because companies openly raise prices at the word âwedding.âÂ
Pro Tip - Never drop the word wedding while planning if you donât need to. Most things can be for âan event youâre planning.â This obviously doesnât include things like the venue, DJ (who needs specific wedding songs), and the wedding dress company if youâre going that route versus just buying a dress.
For my wedding I got âdiscountedâ cupcakes, flowers, decor, bridesmaids dresses, groomsman attire, and invitations. I did this by either searching for things that arenât marketed for weddings or not telling the companies I was working with it was for a wedding. Because honestly, most of the time they donât need to know why youâre ordering.
These companies target people planning their weddings and markup everything the second âweddingâ is said. And itâs said often because people assume the services change exponentially for weddings. They absolutely do not.Â
The best example are the cupcakes I had for my wedding. I used a designer cupcake store in town instead of spending $1000 on a wedding cake. If you place a large order of cupcakes with a cake tree for display - it costs about $150 for 100 (which is what I did). When you order their âweddingâ package - the price raised to a $700 base for 100 cupcakes. The only other perk includes a âtasting.â Forget that. Our tasting was buying a few cupcakes in flavors we thought weâd like and picked three. It cost maybe $20.Â
What these companies do is scummy and targets people who donât have information about the event industry.
I will yell it from the rooftops until people realize thereâs a better way.
i was 14 and i was walking through a mall by myself at 12am after my shift at coldstone creamery lol and a bunch of men started whistling and meowing and getting really close to me and they kept asking me questions and i kept not answering until i didnât know what else to do so i said âiâm only 14â and almost in unison they said âwe donât careâ i was so fucking scared i didnât know what to do and they kept talking about how i looked and how my body looked and what they would do i was on the verge of tears i was all alone in a huge mall i knew i couldnât outrun them all i felt totally hopeless until a maintenance worker came up to all of us with a huge industrial broom in her hand, i thought she was going to yell at all of us for being in the mall after hours bc she probably thought we were all friends but instead she cursed all of them out in spanish, threatened to press a panic button on her belt and then proceeded to walk me to the basement garage and waited with me until my mom got there to pick me up she had a death grip on her cart the whole time and a face of steel she looked so strong and i just kept saying thank you and she kept saying not to thank her because she had to stop them.
that was the moment i realized women were the most important beings on this planet and we have to protect each other bc nobody else is going to, she didnât even know me, we couldnât even communicate that well because of the language barrier, she could have lost her job for waiting with me in the parking lot but she looked out for me when she didnât have to, she had nothing to gain from it, iâm 21 now and i tell everyone this story even though it happened 7 years ago, what she did that night helped me form and shape lot of my beliefs early on.Â
i was at a grocery store really late one night and some old guy kind of eyed me as i walked out of the store next to this other lady. She and I made eye contact and i knew she was scared too. we loaded up our groceries into our cars as fast as possible and I had way more bags than her so she got done faster than me. I panicked because i was sure she was going to leave so i just hurried faster, shaking a little, and then i noticed she sat in her car, watching me and making sure nobody came near. She waited not until all my groceries were loaded, or until my cart was put away, or until I got into my car. No, she didnât drive away until I drove away.Â
And that was the moment that I realized how much women need other women. That we canât win this war without each other and we have to be looking out for each other, every second.Â
my last year in new york city, i got off the subway around 9 or 10p.m. i only lived about 5 blocks from the f train, but i hadnât gotten more than two before a womanâs hand suddenly touched my arm.Â
âthat guy behind us is following you,â she said. âhe was watching you leave the train car and followed you up.â
i hadnât noticed him, or at least not noticed him following me. when we stopped outside a grocery store, he stopped half a block back and loitered. the woman linked her arm with mine and walked me several blocks out of her way to my front door and made sure i got inside safely.
another time, nocigar and i were walking home and at a stoplight a stranger grabbed my arm when i wouldnât respond to him and tried to physically drag me over to him. sheâwho is, by the way, not a very physically imposing girlâripped his hand off my arm and snarled, âdonât fucking touch her.â
protect your friends. protect strangers. there are good men in the world, but donât wait for them to do something if you can do it yourself.
I was at a club once and my friend left with her boyfriend so I finished my drink and was heading out to the parking lot when three girls came up to me and basically surrounded me.Â
âThose guys behind us were talking about following you. We can walk with you.âÂ
I have MMA training but have never in my life had been offered the protection and sanction of my own gender. This is so important.Â
GIRL CODE. FUCKINâ GIRL CODE. LEAVE NO GIRL BEHIND. EVER.
Girls, help each other. Men, learn that this behavior isnât okay. We wouldnât have to be scared if this wasnât an issue to begin with.
Ladies and gents - help the women who need you. Too many men think this is okay, too many men think they can leave it alone. You canât. Help people. Help the women in your lives, help the women youâve never met before.
