hey chat! uhhhh sorry for not being active too often almost everyone has been busy QwQ

but YEA! everyone else will hopefully be more active soon! we're ALLLLL cooking behind the scenes but none of that can be public yet >:3
im also working on a liiiiittlleeee surprise to hopefully untie the few fans of the project more and give everyone a place to hang out! it'll hopefully be done being set up in the next few months!1!1!1!

Wrote a short Salem focused drabble for the sillies
A normal day at the boardwalk
Salem carefully walked along the boardwalk, feeling each individual plank slightly bend as he passed over them. It was nice to be able to leave the house, it had been a few days since they did that!
Although they couldn't help shake this weird feeling that something was off…
It was probably just their anxiety flaring up! He really needed to try and get some medication for it…
It was late afternoon and the sun was starting to set, the perfect time to finally use those fancy colored pencils that Atlas gave him and sketch out a seaside sunset over the ocean!
The boardwalk was always interesting to him
It was a long planked downwards road that led to the beach, starting from a spot between the neighborhoods and the rest of the town and lined with shops as boardwalks tend to be.
He always found it funny that the boardwalk was more packed than the rest of the tiny town, cornerstores and typical grocery markets being ignored for fresh pastries and home grown vegetables.
It was always an interesting sight to see and was one of the many reasons that the neighboring city stressed them out.
After a surprisingly long walk they finally touched down on the beach, taking a deep breath of the salty air before immediately having a short coughing fit because of the salt.
Was it always THAT Salty?
Clearing their throat after that, Salem pulled out a beach towel from his crossbody and laid out onto the sand before sitting down and opening up his sketchbook.
Huh… there were uhm-more pages finished than this… uh-huh that's… interesting…
Also it was a very temperate day for summer, heh-it was almost cold!
No wait, it was cold! But it was summer, It shouldn't be this cold until late at night!
Or… was he cold?
Why would he be cold though? He was completely bundled up!
Come to think of it… he was usually pretty hot whenever he wore a sweater or jacket in the middle of summer but today it was nice out…
Was… the sky always ocean blue?
The air was thick and claustrophobic, bubbles floating freely through the now aqua tinted atmosphere that flooded the beach all of a sudden.
Come to think of it… there wasn't anyone else at the boardwalk either… the entire town was surprisingly empty…
What was going on?!
As that cold feeling in his chest seized, his eyes immediately opened to be greeted with the ocean floor.
Salem lifted their head up with their claw hand and carefully adjusted their optics blinked the sleepiness out of their eyes before finally processing everything.
Oh right
This was his afterlife life now…
Cold, empty, alone, and trapped underwater…
That memory of the boardwalk was all just a dream…
They let out a very exhausted sigh before slumping back onto the sea floor.
As many people know, Haunted Scrapyard (as the name suggests) is full of a ton of ghastly goobers (most of which are haunted robots) meaning that (for some) death is not the end!
I'm not gonna explain the logic behind it cuz it's an entirely different can of worms but Salem is a funky haunted robot, more specifically an underwater drone that has been altered by spectral nonsense
Also, this is Salem now!
(he doesn't look familiar idk what you're talking about-/silly)
Now: WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED????
I'm not gonna explain everything because it's too many specific events and it would take too long (and also I have plans to write it into a fic) so I'm just gonna boil it down to the bare basics:
Salem does not like their new vessel one bit
One of Salem's most notable traits is their dysphoria, they DESPISE their metallic serpentine form and yearn for the comforting familiarity of flesh and bone
They DO NOT want to be undead and it causes them active panic and distress if they think about it too much
They hate how non-human they look and often describe themselves as a freak or monster due to it
Their worst enemy is their own reflection and that is the core of their eventual arc
(which isn't going to be talked about here because it's not done whatsoever)
Now let's skip forward a bit and introduce Salem's only "friend" and closest ally:
This is Ani_! (Created by/belongs to my very swag bestie @mothhue) (THIS IS NOT MY CHARACTER) You have probably seen them before in some of my Salem focused doodles
They have a lot of lore of their own (see their Artfight profile) so I'm just gonna focus on a few key traits:
They have the ability to observe through plants, they have significantly more knowledge on how this haunted robot stuff works than almost anyone, they make a lot of deals/favors, they trade info for info, they do a lot of things for the sake of entertainment, and they are very morally questionable and are incredibly emotionally disconnected from their "clients"
You can probably see how this goes...
Ani_ makes contact with Salem, as they tend to do when it comes to freshly deceased haunted robots
Salem is desperate for any company and information he can get so he gladly tells Ani_ all they wish to know (which is just basic information like his name, where he came from, how he died, etc)
Ani_ tells him all he wants to know and he keeps adding onto the list of questions, learning as much as possible and going into denial mode about certain things
He starts getting attached and trys to strike up another conversation but they disappear (mumbling something about Ardei Glade)
Salem tries to follow them, gets lost, scales a tree to figure out where he is, realizes he has no idea how he even got up here, freaks the heck out, and calls out to Ani_
They respond and they also have no idea how he got up there but they help him down and drag him back to the sea
Salem questions why they left so quickly, they dodge the question, Salem freaks out about being alone again, they notice the seaweed wrapped around his wrists and that they can observe through it and realize how useful this could be, they say that they'll return sometime soon and that "even if I'm not physically here, I'll always be watching!" And Salem questions what that means before noticing the glowing yellow eyes on the seaweed
And now we have the most dysfunctional duo ever/silly
The thing about Salem and Ani_'s relationship is the complete dissonance between both of their perspectives
Salem views Ani_ as a genuine friend who (despite their strange demeanor) means well and wants to spend as much time with them as possible
Ani_ views Salem as just another one of their clients (a particularly clingy one) and another pair of eyes that could serve as some use occasionally, they go along with the friend thing for their own amusement and the benefit they get from Salem's desperation (he will do anything they say just for a basic conversation or minimal reward)
This dynamic that me and Moth created is incredibly fun to write and has led to some really fun scenarios and shenanigans
(it should also be noted that Ani_ is very much a divine being in a sense and those plant powers aren't just for observation) (also all of these were done by Moth since all my Ani_ Salem interactions are all either on misc doodles pages with some unrelated stuff mixed in or comics that require some context)
Now let's jump a tiiinnyy bit out of left field and talk about something very out of context and questionably canon

The very normal ship between Salem Kostopoulos Haunted Scrapyard and Jade Lighthouse Bloom

(ONCE AGAIN SOME OF THIS ART BELONGS TO MOTH) (JADE IS ALSO ANOTHER ONE OF MOTH'S CHARACTERS)
I cannot begin to explain their dynamic other than "2 nerds who are both hopeless romantics with anxiety issues" I just wanted to mention it because it exists and it happens way later in Salem's arc and it's nice to see them happy before I throw them back into the torture nexus
Ok back to serious stuff
Ok so a lot of Salem stuff I currently have written down is all random facts and stuff on discord so I'm probably gonna make a bonus part 3 full of screenshots and lore tidbits
However when it comes to Salem focused stuff there's a few AUs that I haven't made public yet outside of discord that would need their own lore posts, a whole comic, and most notably: an entire fic!
Here you can read it if you want it has some pretty neat character stuff in it
There's also quite a few W.I.P fics I need to finish...
But uhhhhh yea! That's Salem
There's definitely a lot more I wanna talk about but those could be dedicated yap posts of their own

YIPPEEEEEEEE ITS TIME FOR A FULL ON INFO DUMP HEHEHEHEHEHEH >:3
now you may be asking: "Witch! Why aren't you doing this with Syi or Carol or Lavender!1!1!"
And the answer to that is simple:
THEY ARE ALL REALLY LORE HEAVY-
Syi, Lavender, and Carol are all incredibly multifaceted characters who have A LOT of important plot stuff happening with them and a lot of mystery and intrigue that come with their side of the story making it REALLY HARD to talk about them while keeping that air of mystery
Think of it like- trying to explain the plot of A Hat in Time vs trying to explain the plot of Resident Evil
Resident Evil has a really interesting story full of complicated characters and unknown horrors but with how big the story is it can be hard to explain
A Hat in Time is a more Simple story and while it still has some dark elements (cough cough Subcon lore) it's a lot sillier and more lighthearted compared to the twisted secrets of the Resident Evil series!

Anyways
This is Salem!
They are a transmasc nonbinary who lives in a fancy seaside neighborhood close to a harbor town with their siblings and parents
They have a few part time jobs, they like sketching marine life and photography, they have awful impulse control, they refuse to wear anything that isn't a coat or sweater of some variety (or just anything with short sleeves in general), they have a habit of always saying "oki" instead of "ok", their favorite book series is about a lonely Prince escaping a controlling Queen and becoming a powerful ghost after she ends up killing him, and they had a boyfriend!
Who was uhm...
Not a very good partner...
Salem was always given extra attention due to being the only one out of all their siblings to have a romantic relationship but he never really felt comfortable about it, ESPECIALLY after he cut his hair and started to present more masc
Which their ex did NOT like whatsoever...
Neither did their parents...
It was always a complicated relationship being their ex's "princess" and "favorite girl"
Boundaries were constantly crossed and personal space was violated far too often
However it was always followed with compliments and sometimes even gifts
The most notable one being a chain bracelet that was incredibly uncomfortable to wear
However they never took it off because it was a sign of devotion
A sign of "care"
So no matter how much it poked their skin, they wore it
It was only after a particular incident of boundary violation did Salem "confront" and break up with his ex
A sorrowful, anxious phonecall made while he was on his way to get a nice sunset picture of the ocean
And well... Once he reached that scenic viewpoint
Someone was on his trail...
They made a rushed decision...
A panicked decision...
And uh- it sure did
You see: the plan was to hop over the fence, carefully slide down the cliff slide (it looked slanted enough to be possible), and once at a safe point carefully climb down the cliff onto the rocks below, carefully lower themself into the water, and swim to the shore around the cliff side
However uhhhh as the handy-dandy diagram above shows:
THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN!
so: WHY THE HECK WOULD THEY DO THIS???
well...
I said it was desperate did I not?
So...
After falling head-first into sharp rocks and tumbling down the edge of a cliff, Salem fell into the ocean and due to his severe head injuries, wasn't able to swim out of it...
And so Salem Kostopoulos, after not returning home that night and several days of concern from his family, was declared a missing person
Their ex pleaded innocent and claimed that he hadn't seen them at all
A search party around the nearby Narrowleaf's Root City and Ardei Glade yielded no results
Their body was never found...
...
However this isn't the end
Just the beginning :)
