I’
I find it funny that some characters know Merlin is a strange creature just by observing they.
For example, basic body functions that Merlin doesn't perform: they doesn't blink, they doesn't breathe, they doesn't have a heartbeat. Most people don't notice, but those who pay close attention to Merlin realize that they don't close their eyes unless they are sleeping, or leaning on Merlin just to notice that, despite the pleasant temperature of his body, Merlin's chest does not move.
And their eyes glow in the dark, it makes sense and would be very funny. Everyone is scared the first time they see it.
Speaking of names, our Merlin is supposed to have one too, right?
What we've been called before we became Merlin. How did our school friends and teachers call us? Does anybody remember? Don't tell me Cyran would have refrained from using our true name out of respect if he remembered it.
Although imagine a triumphant
"We've met again… Josephine!" (the crowd gasps)
Especially considering that knowing one's true name is supposed to give you power over them.
(btw the Aurelian debacle gets funnier if you imagine all the possible Merlin names. "What do you mean your true name isn't "Booty_Destroyer"???)
But our true name has probably been erased from history the same way our true appearance was.
The game is being sly about it. I think it was our mecha-hamster who confirmed that even the light-skinned, white-haired person from all the portraits isn't necessarily how we looked. We are so mysterious and magical that even our original appearance is magically retroactively concealed. Probably the same goes for the name.
How do our pre-Merlin-times friends remember us? Does Zorya remember a faceless, nameless little rascal when she reminisces about our school days?
The parents who led their child to the Lyceum for the first time, to seal our fate as a future Merlin and the world savior, who did they say goodbye to? Are they still alive, with the memories of their faceless, nameless child who forgot about them?
In view of the latest announcements, I'm currently not even sure the game is going to have a story and lore anymore. But if it does, can we finally have Sad Merlin? Like, having to confront our feelings? Addressing the tragedy of what happened to us?
I know that Dura did hint at our extraordinary nature. We are supposed to be out of this world in some way or something.
But until the game implicitly contradicts it, that'll be my headcanon:
We used to be a normal child. But becoming a Merlin made us acquire that unearthly "outside of the tree or life" quality Dura mentioned. It was what erased our true name and our appearance from existence.
So, after the CoA story and all that crazy shit happened we all just happened to have more info about Cyran especially his dark magic.
We all know that, Cyran always envy of Merlin. So far it's seem Cyran always envious of Merlin's magic and their "Arrogant self righteous" act. As how Cyran always lose to Merlin whatever it is, how he's always in their shadow and people keep referring him as second to Merlin, the chief court mage that once Merlin's classmate.
Meanwhile Merlin always referred as 'prodigy kid', the greatest mage ever, the legendary mage and ect. As how people keep call out for their sacrifice during the war and how the world wouldn't be survive until now if it weren't for their sacrifice.
These two goes through different perspectives of the being the greatest mages. Yes, I called both of them greatest mages. Because, no matter how I hate Cyran, he's infact a greatest mage.
Cyran advanced in all magic that were needed to become chief court mage. He's was infact is good in whatever his position needed, from noble etiquette to his magic. His whole point in his job is to serve the Empire, more specific the Royal family. Magic is uses to serve the empire as well to overseer the magic in Empire, that's a purpose for chief court mage.
Meanwhile, Merlin isn't a a court mage. They're a Merlin. First seat in Arcana council. The two jobs are very much different. Arcane council isn't direct to The Empire, the magic organization isn't belong to the Empire but belong the whole Esperia. Their magic isn't use for politics or to serve Royal family, it is for the world. Arcane council isn't belong to Lightbearer, it's belong to everyone. Merlin isn't serving only one faction, they're in fact serving the whole realm with their magic. As that is one of their purpose as Merlin.
They both had different jobs and how it's done, you can't really compare both of it bc they're just that different. Because Cyran's job is magic is for the Empire, while Merlin job is magic is for everyone.
Now move to their powers.
Cyran actually good with his magic, I admitted it unfortunately. He's great if he's managed to become the second top among other talented students back in the day, as show through flashbacks that Lyceum was like one of those asian school with intense study hours and students chasing the grade and ranks until pass out. Back then magic was deem as privilege and power, not as wonder itself. I could imagine Cyran just fought as best he could to have that second rank secure for himself. Being the second is hard. But that's not the problem, Cyran didn't want that second place. He wants the first place, which is belong to Merlin.
Merlin is great with their magic, incredible so. During their students years, many professors claimed that they're so great at their magic but their behavior is minus F. They're improper, too loud, cause mishaps in Lyceum until Professors stressed out. Merlin is fucking delinquent kid at same time is a genius. Their magic are so great that they earned that first place. Merlin isn't competitive like Cyran who studies hours and hours, fight against other students. Merlin just that great with magic.
And y'know from it seem, Lyceum didn't see how hard you worked for the first or second place, they only see if your magic is good and deserve a place. Cyran is great, but there are Merlin that even greater than him. He's ended up in second place, Merlin in first place.
Does it fair? Hell nah. I don't think so.
See, there is why this competitive is so unfair. Because we compare two people that are different.
Cyran is mortal, a human man with incredible magic that already greater than what other human could do. Human have short span of life. Cyran is like 50ish? In current timeline. At his age with his magic, that's incredible achievement. He's enrolled maybe at young age and already good at magic, years in lyceum honed his power, and become chief court mage while still studying magic. He's spend most of his life studying magic.
Merlin isn't a mortal, they're not a human.
In ToD, we got revelation that Merlin isn't a human. They're not connected to ToL at all, while in Esperia all creatures is connected to Esperia. Merlin is something out worldly that actually didn't belong to Esperia.
For human and something that isn't a human to compete and being compare.. isn't work.
We still don't know what exactly Merlin is, what are they and why they're in Esperia. We don't know a lot of things about Merlin and maybe Cyran himself don't know Merlin.
All we could've know is that Merlin obviously older than what people thought of them be and perhaps exist longer than anyone else. Mf they're might be as ancient as the dead gods who knows. And if we didn't know how exactly old they are, how we could sure they're did what Cyran did? Spending years of his life studying magic, for a human that only live for few years.
Merlin could've like thousand of years old and spend most of that time studying magic too, much more time for them to do it and advanced in most magic. Compared to Cyran who had 50 years studied magic and maybe a years more to continue it, before he died. Merlin don't. They had more time to honed, perfected their magic bc they're what, basically immortal.
And we don't even know if Merlin have their own magic, their own power system that out of Esperia's power and magic. All these time we only sees them using Esperia's magic that already powerful. What if they had their own magic and power that even more powerful? Cyran already losing, because he's studied Esperia's magic and dark magic, those already powerful. But can't be more powerful than Merlin's own mystery magic that could be something Esperia don't own.
A human could studied for years to become great at what they're doing, but something inhuman could spend more years doing the same thing and become more great than that human.
That isn't fair. Cyran had limited time to become great mage, and he's Basically already a great mage for a human!! He's could be considered a prodigy magic user! But no.
Instead he's consider weaker than Merlin, an inhuman being that pretend being human.
No one in Esperia know that Merlin aren't a human. Cyran himself might not know this, bc although they spent years together in lyceum from childhood, Cyran never knew Merlin before Lyceum. He doesn't know anything about Merlin he thought he knew. Merlin have so many secrets that, whatever Cyran thought he knows those secrets, is just a tip of iceberg.
Merlin is a mysterious, inhuman being that just so happened in same world with Cyran, a human who just dreamed to become the best.
I always wanted to say this.
Cyran could've been the Prodigy kid if it wasn't Merlin.
He could've been the Merlin himself! But no, he doesn't. His magic is considered weak compare to Merlin's. That doesn't even help that Cyran incredible insecure and had worst self-esteem possible.
Cyran wanted become like Merlin, he wants whatever Merlin had. Cyran always found himself lose to Merlin and standing behind their shadow.
He shouldn't be. But whatever he's doing isn't helping his case at all.
He wanted become better than Merlin, he wanted to stop standing behind their shadow.
But he didn't do anything that actually helped him here. Instead, he continues to compare himself to them, studies and copies Merlin's magic from the magic book, he's even used dark magic so he could be better than Merlin.
Does that do anything? No.
Instead it's just dragging him down, he doesn't exactly bring himself up and better than Merlin. His desperation to become greater than Merlin is exactly what brought him down. He uses every possible way to one up Merlin, but the person themselves don't even know he's doing this.
If he wants to stop being under Merlin's shadow, then why he's keep standing behind them? He could've step aside and shine on his own.
But he can't, his insecurities and hell of pride wouldn't allow him to. Because I'm his mind why he needs shine on his own while there a brighter shine right to his side? That'll overshine him? Nah.
Y'know what this is tiring me.
Basically Cyran is actually the prodigy, but because there's this mf non human asshole that more greater than him, he's become overshadowed while he could've shine bright too.
