So you can call me Rose (it's not my real name tbh but the word "rose" — as a flower — is the part of its meaning which I've always adored). I'm now at the first step of my way to become a scientist. I'm a stem freshman at the university (not in English-speaking country so my grammar can be bad, sorry), getting a bsc in general biology. I've been studying philology before (don't ask lol) therefore I'm a little bit older than 18. I think I might say I'm in my mid-twenties if age is important for someone. For me it's not, I strongly believe you are never late to go for your dream.

I like, obviously, biology and all other natural sciences (especially physics, it's incredible!!), some branches of history (Tudor's England, late Middle Ages in Portugal, 18th century in Russia, 19th century in Germany and history of science in all of the world ofc), art landscapes. I also love sci-fi literature and shows, I'm a huge fan of Card's Ender cycle, DW and SCP Foundation project!! Can talk about it for hours. When I studied philology I even wanted to dedicate my bachelor thesis to soviet sci-fi writer Alexander Belyaev but that was affairs of bygone days (although I still love and reread his works).

Occasionally I fall in love with certain fantasy work (HP, Cassandra Clare's books, ASOIAF universe etc.) however it's not my cup of tea in general. I'm considering myself being in "House of the Dragon" fandom but I don't think I will talk much about it here, its awful writing broke my heart and insulted my common sense totally.....

As for games, my favourite ones are Cells (mobile game about evolution), Universe Sandbox (simulator of processes in space), Detroit: Become Human and Atomic Heart.

I think that's all I could tell at this point, the post is already too long xd. Well, now I'm choosing a certain field of biology to specialise in. I loved botany with all my heart since I was a child but some area of zoology accidentally captivated me few weeks ago. There would be updates if I will establish this matter firmly.

I'll speak plainly, I'm quite lonely and have no close friends irl so feel free to write me about anything if you want to!! There's nothing I love more than talking about stuff. :D

here's a secret: whatever you're doing, you have to root for your peers with all your heart because it forces you to root for yourself too. I've seen people in various spheres of my life (workplaces, education, art, activism) fall into the trap of envy and resentment when they see others succeed while they struggle, and it always always goes hand in hand with them pulling back and giving up and stagnating.

when you let yourself get sour grapes about shit, you tacitly give up on yourself. when you sit around hoping other people will flop and fail so you can catch up to them, you stop trying. it's a fantasy of mediocrity, the vain wish that other people would walk so you could take the gold medal at a jog. wouldn't you rather come last place at 27mph?

need y'all to know that most academics have publicly searchable email addresses and this not only makes their day but they can put nice emails in their giant packets for applying for jobs or tenure. "hi i read your paper for a class and it was very helpful, im at xyz college and the class is blah with professor blah" is sufficient and ENORMOUSLY helpful

Good morning to everyone who reads this!! Hope you're all well and happy

So I got back from my weekend. I spend it mostly sleeping for an abnormally long time (hooray insomnia 😔✌️) but I also did an observation paper (and powerpoint presentation for it ofc) about Caspian Sea's geological features and biodiversity for my earth sciences' class. The teacher doesn't require any really hard scientific analysis in this class (only main information that any man with a degree should know, maybe with a little bit more details that are needed for biologists) however it took me SO many hours to do it, it's totally indecent even for someone like me (for the context: I'm quite a slowcoach). I had no time to do anything else so I expect a tough week to come, I'll need to catch up with both old and new tasks.

Anyway I enjoyed doing this project and I knew a lot of intriguing facts about Caspian Sea's fauna and phytoplankton and this incredible delight of discovering something you don't hear even a single sound about before is what I am study (and actually live) for even if it activates my sleep deprivation cycle again

Forgot to mention this in intro post but I'm also studying German on duolingo and tbh every time I get back to app it wakes up contradictory thoughts in my head. On the one side, it helps me to get my microscopic dose of speaking (which I can't receive anywhere else: unlike English, I'm learning this language without a tutor), however, on the other side I noticed that the more regularly I take lessons in duolingo, the more stagnation in understanding German I feel...

I didn't feel like that when I learned Portuguese there so it's a twice strange situation. Wish I know which neurobiological mechanisms are standing behind it all

Today I had an inorganic chemistry class where I worked quite productively. It's still troubles me to solve chemical problems at the blackboard but I try to volunteer for this as often as possible in order to manage it. Morning attempt was successful one (although I'm not completely pleased with myself... how I (don't) love being a perfectionist 👌🏻).

After that I visited earth sciences' lecture. The main topic was hydrosphere. It was very fascinating and I knew a lot of things about oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and swamps that were absolutely new for me but I wanted to nap so bad (thanks to my sleep deprivation) that teacher's words seems like a distant echo in the fog. :( Definitely need to check up my notes and study materials at home.
