This rare creature is known as the lesser long-nosed store jar. It can sniff out any manner of small treats to swallow and hold within its belly.
also fond of this angle
This thing is so cute I had to draw it (and it’s larger sugar bowl variant)
Trying to get into digital art… still need to find a style though…
Rough drawings of some ocs to get out of art block (I didn’t mean for mermay day 20 to be the last day… art block is just unavoidable sometimes)
Day 20: leafy sea dragon
I’ve been drawing so many characters in like sea grass ponchos or just seaweed wraps that I was wondering what else could make clothing in the ocean. Apparently there is an extremely rare material known as sea silk. Not only is the art of making it nearly lost, but so is the creature it’s harvested from, the pen shell, being endangered. I thought clothing made from golden threads such as those would be fitting for a noble sea dragon.
Even though I’m not doing it every day, I honestly think this is the longest I’ve managed to stay with something like this. Like it’s not perfect but honestly I’m pretty happy with myself.
Day 18: sea snake
If you’ve never laid down in the sun for an extended period of time you have not known bliss.
She looked easy to draw (my other cat)
Didn’t feel like drawing a mermaid so here’s my cat instead
(photo under the cut)
Day 13: Flying fish
Not as happy with the coloring on this one, though it was partially due to the fact I have a very limited set of colored pencils. I wanted to make him a pale blue but I didn’t have a light enough blue (or at least one different enough from the tail color).
Also has anyone else ever heard that flying fish move so quickly you could get killed from a head on collision or am I just making that up.
(Uncolored under the cut)
Day 12: umbrella slug
I realized that I don’t find pure sketches that interesting to look at so I tried coloring it this time. Considering it’s like my first attempt at coloring one of my drawings in years I’m pretty happy with it. Though it does make it more noticeable that I used a different shell than what goes with the reference for the body…

Day 11: Walrus, sea lion, and jellyfish
After 11 days I’m getting a bit burnt out so I tried something a little different today, though tbh I probably should have put more effort into making their outfits look like they were actually made in the ocean (I feel like the two in front aren’t sea lion and walrus enough…)
Day 9: Fan worm
I was super unproductive yesterday. (Hence no day 8)
Anyways I was gonna draw two more of them but like… I didn’t know how to draw that har in a more simple way and didn’t want to draw it another two times.
Day 7: manatee and sea urchin
How wonderful is it that we get to live in the same world as manatees? If they went extinct I think id kill myself
Uh anyways I kinda rushed drawing the little urchin kid, not super happy with it but I think I captured the essence of “feral little child”. I can imagine the old manatee man found the sea urchin in his seaweed patch and decided to raise them.
Day 6: krill
Man these take me a while to decide almost every time. I didn’t really know what to do with any of the options today, but I think it ended up kinda cute.
Day 5: king mackerel and humpback whale
This one took a bit to choose but I’m pretty happy with the result. I was thinking of doing elephant seal but I couldn’t really think of a way to make it not just an elephant seal with arms. Then the idea of a small king mackerel and a large humpback whale queen kinda thing popped into my head.
Also did you know female elephant seals don’t have the big noses??? They just look like pale sea lions
Through traveling and being sick I didn’t really have time to make an entry today so have this stupid thing for day 4
Seriously though have you ever seen a unicorn fish if they had hands they would be pointing at it to show you it
Mermay day 3: violet sea snail (and irukandji)
Not super happy with it tbh but I spent way too much time figuring out the pose to give up.
Violet sea snails are actually pretty interesting, they spend their life upside down floating on bubbles made of mucus. They actually float right below the surface of the water but I didn’t know how I’d draw that effectively
