Daily fish fact #711
King mackerel!
The biggest of the Atlantic mackerels, the maximum size for a female that's been recorded was 184 cm (6 feet) and 45 kg (99 lbs), though most individuals will average at around 70 cm (2 feet 3 inches) and 5-10 kg (11-22 lbs). Females tend to grow to be twice as big as males to lay as many eggs as possible.
You've been king mackereled!
Finished assembling the king mackerel skull! This was an adventure. It’s mostly done using Elmer’s glue, but I had to drill and wire the heavy jaw bones and there’s a metal rod through the vertebrae and cranium back into the wooden plaque.
I had been planning to keep this, but I’m about to move across the country and might be willing to sell it to help with that. If anyone’s interested you can message me an offer. I gave up on the tongue/gills, but I have all the pieces and can include those if you want to have a go at finishing the job.
