Not sure if I introduced Gladiator. He is a vanilla crayfish. Top picture was 5 months ago when he was around two inches long and bottom is from yesterday. He is now about 5-6 inches long and very fierce! I was pretty afraid of getting pinched while redecorating his tank.
Just got back from 4 months working as a fisheries technician intern in Colorado! Did some really awesome work with some awesome animals.
I think Levi has popeye :( he’s been hiding a lot lately and today was the first good look I got at him. Did a water change and dosed him with bacterial meds. I’m going to do a water test tonight when I have time.
Good news is that after just one dose of medicine, he has perked up! He was begging for food today which he hasn’t done for a while.
So I ended up putting Levi down. He stopped improving and looked like he was in so much pain. RIP Levi

BF and I are working on setting up a crested gecko enclosure! We are planning to be getting a crestie towards the end of March when we are back from our ski vacation and the reptile expo is in town. Today we picked up some of the basic equipment and he will be building a stand for it tomorrow!

Ugh. Caligula and Cinncinnatus were both in the big axie side of the tank when I got home. I was able to catch Cinn, but not Caligula. Honestly, I think Caligula is big enough that the older ones aren’t bothered by him and don’t see him as food, but we are still going to keep him separate. BF will separate him out when he gets home and does a water change.
But anyway, I was trying to feed Speckles. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet, but Speckles is a...special boy. He will only eat pellets or blackworms. We don’t feed blackworms anymore because they are way too small for him and too expensive. He will only eat the pellets if dropped perfectly in front of his face. This means we take any chance we can to feed him. I was trying to feed him and Caligula decided to just sit on top of his head and steal the food from him. Oh boy.

Both are really taking to it well. Cincinnatus has already gotten over the barrier, but we’re pretty sure they’re both too big to be bothered by the older axies. We still don’t want to take the risk. He hasn’t made it back over since the water levels have been lowered.

meet Embezzlement, the dragonscale disaster i bought for the exclusive purpose of giving him a good 6 months, and then eventually biopsying after he becomes a blind lump of tumors!
(sounds morbid, but he’s just getting humanely euthed and documented so hobbyists have access to close-up pics of dragonscale diamond eye and the tumors beneath the skin, that’s all)

it’s a bit of both! bettas have been inbred for bizarre genes without any concern for their long-term health—over in southeast asia, they’ve just gotta look pretty for ~5 months so they can be shown and bred—so those pretty genes come with some weird shit. solid red bettas are prone to going lumpy, blue bettas have weakened immune systems because they can barely process carotenoids, and marble bettas have constantly mutating cells that can turn them into tumor factories. (it should be noticed that the marble gene also makes bettas all pretty and multicolored, so a ton of bettas carry it, and are therefore at a high risk of developing tumors.)
dragonscale is one of the worst genes, though. it’s a thickened, shiny, usually white or blue scaling that’s present over part of the body at birth. as the betta ages, you can see the scales start to creep over the rest of the body and into the fins.
and as you can see with this boy, it eventually covers their eyes, too. this is usually called “diamond eye” or “dragon eye”. he’s only got ¼ of this eye covered so far, and the other is totally clear for the time being.
they can still move their eyes back into the sockets, but once it covers their pupils, their vision is gone.
now, it doesn’t happen 100% of the time, but it’s often enough that you shouldn’t buy a dragonscale. ones with a couple shiny scales scattered across their backs might be alright, since the scaling apparently has to touch the eyes before spreading onto them, but is it really something you want to risk?
anyways, i’ll be documenting this bastard’s decline in health so people can see how fast these abominations go downhill in an ideal tank. 👍

Update: 1/30/19
Rescaped Levi’s tank the other day. I’ve been battling some hair algae in there lately so I scrubbed the sides and trimmed up the moss. It looks a bit better now, but I think I’ll just wait and see how it goes. Also Levi now has 5 otos (which my iPhone wants to autocorrect to otolaryngologists) with him that my boyfriend is growing out before they join the 90 gallon. I doubt they’ll make a huge dent, but at least they’ll be well fed!
We are also moving the juvenile axies to the 55 soon. They will be separated by a barrier until they are big enough. At least one (Cincinnatus) will be sold and we will probably keep Caligula or sell him when he’s older. And it does appear Caligula is a male.
And in other news, one of the clawed frogs got out the other day. I was in our room and heard a strange scraping and splatting sound coming from the hall. I figured it was the cats and went to see what they were doing. I go out there and I can see both of them (now staring at me) and can still hear the noise. Man so albino clawed frogs look ugly and creepy when out of the water. He also had managed to get across the apartment so he was pretty red. He’s doing fine now and I check the lid daily.
