Live 20th Anniversary Throwing Copper show AC/TC
Saturday night was billed as a one time performance of Live's Throwing Copper at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ.
Got there in time to see about 15 minutes of the Shackelton's (Thinkloud Entertainment) horror show of an opening. The were literally boo'd off the stage, and it was well deserved. Granted this was a NJ show, but I'm betting it was a lot of a Philly audience and anyone who's played Philly should know, you don't show up and suck or people let you know.
Live went on a little after 10 and opened with, of course, The Dam at Otter Creek and what instantly struck me, was that it sounded like Live. I've seen two Ed Kowalczyk gigs this year, one solo acoustic and one with his full band. The full band show was good, but to me the Live songs he performed didn't sound like Live, they sounded like Ed with a different band. I guess that's not exactly a surprise, being that was the case. The show Saturday night with Chris Shinn *sounded* to me like Live. Chad's guitar tone was right, Patrick's bass was right, Chad's drums were right. It was astounding how accurate it all was.
You could tell that Chris Shinn had some problems with the lyrics and during the meet and greet after the show he even signed and noted on my copy of Throwing Copper the lyrics he fouled up. For me, that took nothing away from the show - I thought his performance and stage presence were absolutely outstanding. Were there a couple vocal clams, yep. Was it a huge train wreck? Not for me it wasn't.
The band went through Selling the Drama and then into I Alone which tore the place up. You could feel the whole balcony section moving under your feet...the crowd loved it. The middle section of the record including Lightning Crashes, All Over you and Shit Towne were fantastic as was Waitress. The highlight of the show for me was Pillar and White Discussion. Pillar has always been my favorite Live song and the band played it like it was going to be the last time they ever did the tune. Shinn was fantastic - he came off the stage and out into the crowd singing the chorus and the house all but came down, and when you didn't think it could get any more ramped up, you'd be wrong because White Discussion peeled the paint. The performance was electric, the crowd was unhinged, they fucking tore it up. It was AMAZING how well the band played the song and how good it sounded. Hats off to whoever was mixing FOH that night - you killed it.
The encore consisted of Pain Lies on the Riverside, Dolphins Cry and Lakini's Juice which again was played to perfection - and not really one of my favorite recorded Live songs, it was phenomenal live and again the crowd could not get enough.
The final song was Horse, the hidden track on TC which honestly I felt was pretty anti-climactic after the powerful version of Lakini's Juice...it really fell flat and the slide guitar that was brought out for that song was wayyyyy too loud in the mix making the whole thing just feel and sound like an afterthought.
Overall, this was one of the most memorable shows I've ever seen. The band was tight aside from the aforementioned vocal clams, which as I said before, really didn't bother me. The great thing was this band sounds like LIVE. It sounded right. It didn't sound like Live with a different singer, to me it sounded like LIVE. Cheers guys!!
