My new drawing 'Reflection' (graphite and watercolor on paper, 13"x18" 2018) is part of a knock out show opening today in NJ at The Florence Academy of Art US. The exhibition "On Paper" showcases drawings by 30 leading contemporary figurative artists in America today. For anyone who enjoys seeing the artists hand at work, drawing shows are a rare and special treat. Check this one out in person if you can at @manacontemporary in NJ, opening today from 2-5pm. It had been a while since I last attempted one, and I was inspired by the thoughtful photographs of Alma Lavenson. The famous American art historian Linda Nochlin recently passed away. When I read her book "Realism" in art college, it not only expanded my understanding of Realism as a movement, but also how to look at representational art with a more critical eye. I learned to be more discerning; to see style, technical bravado, emotional depth, and effective communication as separate entities not always present in equal amounts. I began to learn the deeper complexities in communicating through figurative art. Thankful for her work. Proud to be a part of the traveling museum exhibition, Women Painting Women: In Earnest, which opened this week at the Customs House Museum in Clarksville, TN! Showcasing the art of 30 contemporary female painters, this exhibition is the largest Women Painting Women show to date, and will be at the Customs House Museum from Aug 4th - Oct 1st.
