So what do u think about Simons sexuality after AWTWB?
I was going to say “I don’t have an opinion” and “it literally doesn’t matter”. But actually, ya no I do have an opinion & the framing of his sexuality totally matters.
I’ve said it previously in posts but I think it’s a positive thing that Simon doesn’t use a label. I know so many ppl irl who experience their sexuality and relationships in the same exact way— I experienced my own for 20 yrs in the same way. Not using a label doesn’t deprive a community of anything.
This is what I meant by “it literally doesn’t matter”. Labels are 10000000% a personal thing and people use them (or don’t) for varying reasons. You never even need to say I’M QUEER to BE queer— you don’t even have to actively think it. it’s fhshfhud it’s so stupid— literally all of this stuff is internal and it’s no one’s business. If you read him as bi, if you read him as gay, or anything else, I REALLY don’t think it matters. I think what does matter is forcing a label and demonizing people who don’t agree with you.
The truth is that so many of our experiences overlap. And also??? Just because you call yourself a lesbian and someone else you know is a lesbian doesn’t mean your experience within that label is exactly the same.
Simon is literally told his label is the least of his worries— that’s the truth. Finding a label can feel really good— but it doesn’t change lived experiences and his personal feelings. In the grand scheme of things it really is just a word and some people NEVER find the word that fits them— that’s okay. Some people change identities multiple times— that’s okay. You are still a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
This had me thinking about someone else in the series, though. Agatha.
Simon and Agatha are intentionally foiled.
There’s always been this weird push for Simon to not be anything other than bi— that, that would somehow be “erasure”. (Sorry, sidebar, but if your real life friend who’s gay or bi comes out later as the other and you treat them differently because of it— you’re the asshole, not them.)
Since AWTWB Agatha has been called a lesbian left and right. Did I PERSONALLY read her experience as a lesbian— yes, but I’m also aware that this is based off of my personal experiences and projection— not because it’s hard printed in canon. (see what I said above about Simon— I can personally relate to a lot of Agatha’s narrative. That doesn’t make it the literal case, canonically, and I think that’s fine and okay and good.)
Agatha’s sexuality….literally is the same as Simon’s? Narratively? Literally it’s the same. She never uses a label. She never says she isn’t attracted to men. Tbh I think it’s a little odd that just because she’s dating a butch woman she’s suddenly dubbed a lesbian— this is interesting considering that there are so many bi people who feel like no matter who they date it ends up erasing part of who they are. I’m not saying Agatha is bi, I’m not saying she’s anything….I’m saying the point is the same for her character as it is for Simon’s. It doesn’t matter what labels they are and are not using. Queer is queer.
Tbh this obsession with labels and identity is almost like a brand new fucked up mental illness in online communities and I’m ready for it to die off dbfhjsjkw.
TL;DR: I loved Rainbow’s depiction of Simon & Agatha’s sexualities.
