Yasemin Mori - Bitli Kaptan
Thank you Yasemin Mori, for an album that made me want to blog again after so long. "Finnari Kakaraska" is Mori's third studio album, and I'm really satisfied and thrilled with the direction she's taken her music in. As I've mentioned in my previous post about her, I really enjoyed the "dream-quest-like experience" she channeled in some of her songs. Well, Finnari Kakaraska is a full album in that direction.
And this time, it's more mellow, while still being groovy and upbeat when need be. The album feels much more polished and fluid, a definite maturation of style. It's very layered, and the textures are varied, distinct and interesting. Less rock guitars and more synths was definitely the right call.
Sadly, the album loses a lot facing an international audience, because a crucial part of its atmosphere is created by the lyrics. She tells fairy tales and stories from far away, and sometimes takes us on a journey with her. The lyrics are very evocative, I often found myself mentally picturing the story. The feeling of something unfolding is ever-present. As is her polarizing idiosyncratic vocal phrasing, which reminds me of drunken-style kung-fu: you'd think she's stumbling and falling, but she's very deliberately and precisely doing exactly what she intended to do. I love and I think it definitely resonates with the album's aesthetic.
Still, solid songcrafting, jazzy solos and great musicianship (hat tip to the usual suspects - see tags) might just be enough. But please, this is good-headphones music, don't listen to this album on smartphone speakers if you can help it. Also, unless you're a very experienced and astute listener, it does take a few playthroughs to start peeling the layers, though I wouldn't say it's a "difficult" or heady album. It just becomes better as you notice more and more little touches.
Well, this post turned out to be more about the album than the song, but I felt the song made more sense presented as part of the whole. Speaking of,
