This is such an underrated moment from the grindeldore meeting. I noticed this specific expression Grindelwald makes for the first time during last night’s rewatch and I was floored.
It’s right after Gellert says “with or without you, I’ll burn down their world, Albus. There’s nothing you can do to stop me.” Albus’ expression is sad and horrified until that point but then it turns into the expression of the gif. There is some anger there. There is resolve.
In that moment Gellert KNOWS there’s nothing left to be said. He was never there to nagotiate. He just wanted to win over Albus. He tried flirtation and reminding him of the depth of their emotion. He tries stirring him up by reminding him that once he too saw that the muggles had to be controlled. Finally he tried to show him that the result would be the same no matter what Albus chose, so there was no point in him staying away and sacrificing their connection for something that would happen either way. He tries EVERY argument and he fails.
So this is his last expression before he shuts down and leaves: The tiniest hint of a forced smiled smile filled with half-hearted acceptance. He knows he’s lost. He knows he’ll go down this path alone, and this one time his face is not filled with anger or disdain. He simply looks disappointed and there is sadness there that even reaches his eyes.
I LOVE this moment and I feel privileged that we were gifted with such amazing actors in these roles.
