    —- dax narrowed his eyes when the other began to speak. “you talk way too much. shut the fuck up,” he grunted. the man ran his hands through his hair before turning his attention back to the person in front of him. “as long as vehicles exist and i’m not in some dystopian shit-hole, i’ll rely on them. when they all break down, there’s some spineless fuck who will do everything i say,” dax removed the cigarette from behind his ear and lit it up, holding the end with his teeth, “i’m not worried.”

“jeez,” soohyun mumbled, letting out a low whistle at the other’s hostility. speaking rapidly about everything and nothing at all, simply to fill the air or get their mouth moving, was somewhat of a speciality of theirs, and they did it on a daily basis. complicated was one thing it was not; they enjoyed talking, and greatly appreciated that they didn’t have an issue with getting words out. from time to time, they’d meet people like this, that didn’t think it was fun at all and only wanted to be assholes about it. brushing it off wasn’t a big deal, but they still felt annoying every time someone brought up that they should limit their use of words. “think it’s time to relax, yeah? if i did have a car i sure as hell wouldn’t be giving rides to people that tell me to ‘shut the fuck up’,” they replied despite feeling like they’d rather opt out of the situation by now, “and i was just joking, i don’t seriously think cars are gonna disappear.”

She loved her job, but… hungover? Not so much.

with a pleased smile on their face, taeil laughed loudly. that was more like it. the nickname brought memories back, most of them fond from when they were younger and soohyun used it as a term of endearment, or at least taeil liked to believe. they realized as they got older that they hated the nickname. taeil didn’t want to be tiny in soohyun’s eyes, they wanted to be mature and worthy. well, that was all in the past, but hearing them say that still brought both nostalgia and distaste. “no, i’m big taeil now.” they replied, leaving their mask stacked on top of the other. the smile stayed etched on their lips. they had a feeling it would stay there all night. “you, on the other hand…” they leaned back to examine soohyun, looking at them from top to bottom. “i knew you stopped growing.” they laughed teasingly, leaning back against the bar. “and why’d you say it like that?” they asked, looking up as they passed their hand through their hair. “does it look bad? the stylist who did it really complimented me on how it looked, you know. was she lying?” their gaze traveled back to soohyun, still finding it hard to believe they were sitting right there. two years since they moved away, had it been? the last time taeil remembered seeing them was at their old house, before their mom sold it and moved out to the new house their step dad had bought her. that must’ve been more than three years ago. they vaguely remember mentioning that they were gonna move to vancouver to study, though their last year in toronto was a blur to them. everything was changing so quickly, and in the end they couldn’t connect when exactly was it that they stopped seeing soohyun in the same way they had for eight years. 

truth be told, taeil’s stylist had not been lying to them. it was a colour soohyun could tell would be hard for the everyday person to pull off, but taeil managed to somehow do it perfectly. it suited them and strangely - despite how it could be seen as a colour a reckless teenager decided to get in rebellion against their stuck up parents - made them seem older. at least, soohyun thought it helped them look like they’ve grown a few years but the fact still stood that they had in fact grown a few years, and that might very well be the reason as to why they look, well, grown. soohyun had been so used to seeing taeil as their family friends’ little son that needed to be entertained when they had their regular dinners. soohyun hadn’t minded watching over the other; it had actually been rather nice most times, and taeil had never been particularly annoying to soohyun even as a twelve year old. they opened their mouth to spit out some sarcastic bullshit about how they looked like a child, how soohyun wanted to pinch their cheeks and baby talk them; teasingly, like it always had been. but, they strangely couldn’t find it in them to joke about it. “no, you look really good. it suits you, really well,” they said, the look in their eyes softening as they smiled at the other, fondness covering their entire expression.

“i fully agree, if i like something i’m gonna do it, or eat it this time, i guess. doesn’t matter if it’s slowly killing me. aside from shit like drugs, i’m not going around doing some hardcore shit that’s gonna fuck me up for life. no offense to you if you are, but i think that’s just plain stupid if you wanna live and be beautiful like myself,” soohyun said, placing their hand on their chest as they spoke, amping up the incredulous hint to their voice as they lightly bragged about themselves.

Alessa rolled her head to the side as she listened to the other talk, her eyes drifting open and shut with each waking second. She really was tired, though, she was glad that someone could resonate with her, and as they spoke, she screwed up her nose at the thought of sitting through listening to people’s problems. “Damn, I think you had it worse than me. All I had to do was deal with sick people, they barely talk— your patients sound like hell,” she mock-shuddered.

letting out a soft laugh at the other’s words, soohyun brought their hand up to scratch the space behind their ear awkwardly. “ah, well, i like helping people,” they said with a shrug, attempting to sound as casual as possible. “just-- it wasn’t the best day for that, i guess. i mean, i like my patients most days.”

“dude, i wish i could help, really do, swear on my heart,” soohyun started out, voice laced with faux sympathy, placing their hand over their heart dramatically. “but i just don’t smoke, and i don’t have a car either, because i don’t need one. i walk everywhere, you should see my feet. they’re blue from this constant movement i put them through, i really need to calm down and let them rest, y’know? and maybe yours need more movement, you really gotta stop relying on vehicles to get you around. what are you gonna do when all cars break and we’ve run out of mechanics?”

“no, i think that’s a perfectly fine excuse,” soohyun protested loudly, smiling sheepishly at the other when they remembered hungover people tend to not enjoy any form of intense noise. “i mean, that’s a perfectly fine excuse,” they repeated, nearly whispering this time in a whimsical manner.
