I feel like that my life, at this point, has been full of false praise. I’ve been an entertainer for about 4 yrs now and all I hear from people is how good I am, that I have a great voice, et. I know what I am good at and what I could work on, not to be my own worst critic, I am just familiar with my strengths and weaknesses. What's nice is getting a bit of insight from someone in the audience about how they felt in both good and bad ways. I just find that there are just a lack of caring people in my life to actually give some constructive criticism. You know, to be the kind of person attentive enough to tell you that you have lipstick on your teeth or flakey mascara all over your face. Instead, people just give a golf clap or a pat on the back knowing full well what could be improved while they just let me go about my day looking like shit and not knowing it. It’s like I’m an adolescent who drew a shitty drawing but my Mom hangs it on the fridge anyway. I'm no child and I'm no stranger to criticism. I do love the support, but it’s almost short of ridicule from those who claim to love me and want to see me succeed. I invite feedback and criticism; I thrive on it to improve my art and make it more enjoyable. Only few people have shared with me their insight and I have severely improved upon those points, but I feel there is so much more I don't know about. I don't really ask much of people in life, but all I ask is 'Know Your Role'. So many times do folk'll ask Me to do things with them and they Do Not (don't) deliver or follow through with their Promise or Proposal.. It's just misleading, and I don't appreciate it. If you have an agenda or a situation but want to make plans with Me, be out with it!!! Lord Knows I do!- and I am out with it! If I have an agenda, I'll tell you. If it doesn't work with you, that's fine!; Do Not! Lead Me to believe that it does! It's really really not that much to ask for. 2:24 am rant end.
It’s tough hearing someone talk about what they don’t want in a partner knowing that I am exactly what they’re describing. I hear lots of different straight girls talk about how they couldn’t be with a man that, for example; have better fashion sense than they do, is good or better at make-up, has or does their hair better, has great or better skin, or even that they express their femininity too much or at all! First off, No one is better than anyone! Those are the judgements of that person being passed off. Second, those are the heteronormative and gendernormative points of view of today’s regular society. They are simple but very extreme. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me when I hear that kind of talk. Why wouldn’t you want to be with a man who can express himself that way. You don’t have to be the only person in a romance who knows about those sorts of things. If anything, a straight woman could benefit from it without any threat to their femininity. Speaking as a male, I’m not going to immediately disregard possible intimacy just because a girl is better at fixing a car than I am. Who’s to say that is even a trait males are supposed to take on? It’s just expected in today’s gender/hetero normative society; stereotypes. I’ve seen so many gendernormative relationships clash due to the male’s lack of interest and support of women who are into those things like shopping, make-up, fashion, et; those typical things that [overly] masculine straight guys usually are not interested in. While some men are, all of a sudden they’re not a fit for your ideal relationship. Plenty of women would love for a male to be more sensitive to their needs, wants and pleasures but they don't understand that a male who is in touch with his femininity would be able to provide that for them. Wouldn’t you love it if your partner was interested in those things with you. Such a silly and somewhat shallow thing to do to completely disqualify the possibility of having a romance with a guy just because he carries a purse. Get over it! These are my daily struggles. I’ve been turned down by some great women over these things and it truly is upsetting. I doubt this will pass any time soon. I just have to hold out for a woman who can love me for me and see past my affinity for expressing my femininity.

We’re always transitioning, and just like growth, it’s painful. Dealing with depression is like searching for light in the darkest corners and a lot of my time is spent dealing with it. It’s always said to be the light in a dark room. As I do my best to do that, it come with consequences. It’s just as painful to be the light as it is to be blinded by the light and I’d just rather be at home than deal with any of it. With the amount bullshit I have to deal with on a daily basis, I just feel safer at home; dead to the world. So here’s a song.
In celebration and anticipation of Faith No More's new record due out in April, I'm giving a salute to their finest works from their previous records.
This is my absolute favorite band! I have been on board with this group since the 1989 classic hit "Epic." Their sound can never be duplicated, as they don't really establish themselves in any one genre other than simply 'rock.'
It was so hard to pick just 10, I had to go one step beyond and go for 11. Spinal Tap would be proud!
These are my picks and may not necessarily coincide with your picks. I've selected songs from the Mike Patton era, as that's when the band got their big break and broke their way into my heart. I do love the Chuck Mosely era, but I'm giving this all to the latter. These are the tracks that have shivered my timbers so many times over the past years.
Ricochet
The second song in on 1995's King for a Day, I remember first hearing it going 'Wow! This is the kind of music I want to make!' Full on power chords and grungy leads, this track is by far one of their best! Powerful vocals saying "It's always funny until someone gets hurt, then it's just hilarious!" just sounds like something that is solid but doesn't take itself too seriously. I mean, just look at these guys. You can't look at this picture and not laugh.
Falling to Pieces
The third single on their 1989 gem The Real Thing, was the follow-up single to the hit "Epic," this song actually cemented me in for the long haul. The video has just a strange haunting yet fun and vibrant vibe to it. I love the feel of the rhythm and the over all sound. It's as if you could feel as if this was the last of that funky eighties sound as it exited and takes you into the next decade of music with the bass and piano in the chorus. I love how the song builds up to each chorus and takes you back to the intro then fades. ..and I've always loved the line "The plot thickens every day and the pieces of my puzzle keep crumblin away. But I know, there's a picture beneath" It's a solid track and very underrated. I like to sing it at karaoke and truly nobody gives a shit. It's awesome!
Stripsearch
This track just changed everything for me in 1997 when Album of the Year came out. With the opening track, "Collision," as a great kick off of heaviness followed by this electronic musical masterpiece, really just sets the tone and versatility of the album. This song was like nothing else. The first thing I said the first moment this played was "God damn! That's why I love this band!" I have choked up on this track so many times, it's embarrassing to mention. I love the mellow melancholy of the two vocal melodies and guitar tones that carry you through song up until it breaks off then gets heavy. Brilliance.
Malpractice
This is probably one of the least popular tracks on the 1992's Angel Dust. I picked this one out particularly because it's always stuck with me. The brooding power chords, funky time signature and tempo shifts, random key changes, the eeriness of the keyboards and the screeching vocals made this one the most amazing of songs. Both this track and "Caffeine" were the result of Patton's infamous sleep deprivation project he conducted on himself. It was hard to pick because they're both so amazing.
The Real Thing
Apart from the first three radio songs, I would fast forward the tape to the end because this song kicked of the second side. I didn't actually realize how long the song was, I just loved the sound of it! The ups and downs and all arounds of this song takes you on a journey of space and time. "This is so much real than what I feel." Obviously about taking drugs and having more feelings than being sober. It was a toss up between this and "Zombie Eaters," because I do love the guitar picking style of that song, this one hits home a lot more over being a baby and consciously taking advantage of its caretaker. It was the real thing!- It's the title track and it's fucking classic!
Evidence
This is probably some of their best notable work. As a musician, I like to look at a lot of the the technical stuff that goes into a song that makes it great! This one has so many elements that are superior to most songs today. The bass is mildly simple, there are two guitar parts with a kick-ass solo, 2-3 keyboard parts including a grand piano, and Patton vocals are so sharp on this track, you wouldn't even know it was him screaming on the previous tracks after hearing this. It's a good blend of funk, jazz, fusion, blues and rock all set to the tone of a lounge band. I love how the guitar harmonizes with the piano and continues to solo. Trey Spruance's guitar work never fails to inspire me. He came to work on the album as a favor as he is from Patton's other then-band, Mr. Bungle. I really love that he came in to write and work on all the 'King' tracks. I especially attribute this one to him.
A Small Victory
Truly a stand-out track. It was the first single to promote the Angel Dust album, but it too fell on deaf ears as it didn't have the sound of their smash hit and never saw airplay in the US. I didn't actually care for it at first listen, but I've come to love the flow of the almost alt-pop-rock. It has a lot of cool sayings in it and Patton's voice, again, excels at achieving that melodic range, vocal percussion and savage shouting. The video was a of extreme high production value and that blew the budget for other songs like "Everything's Ruined."
Pristina
Such an amazing finale to a great album. The way it opens hard on a single chord over and over and just keeps you, holding your breath; using the drums sparingly as only to add intensity to the drama. Topped with soft whispery vocals and heavy strings, anticipating climax! Then when you get it and it's glorious! "I'll be with you!" sang majestically over a raging guitar octave chord progression and full on rock drums. Bliss!
Just a Man
Another great finale song, it blends rock and soul with the help of a choir. Add in cheery vocals of romance and a nod to Greek mythos, and you've got a powerful feel-good finale; opposed to many of the other songs of theirs can get pretty dark, heavy and eerie. This is a fun, well-put together jam that even your mom can appreciate! Adding to the variety of what these guys bring to the table.
Ashes to Ashes
Not to be confused with Bowie's classic song, this track has a lot of basic rock elements that made it a great single for the album. The chorus is fantastic!- "Smiling with the mouth of the ocean and I'll wave to you with the arms of the mountain." It's just so imaginative and inspiring. You can really get the sense that this person is really exuberant. The way the melody flows over the chords just feels majestic to coincide with the lyrics. The song was actually pretty successful in the US along with "Last Cup of Sorrow." It really put the band back on the map after you thought they were deceased. I've choked up on this quite a few times as well.
The World is Yours
This track's probably not anyones top anything FNM songs list. I don't think anyone has really heard it, honestly. It was released as a single to promote the "Who Cares A Lot?- Greatest Hits" album, but the track was on a second disc and really fell on deaf ears to those people only looking for a 'hits' album. Although it's origins are unclear to me, I believe it to have been a b-side from the Angel Dust sessions. It just has that sound of Jim Martin's guitar heaviness. Plus with the eclectic ambience and the sounds of elephants and grunting, the song feels like it could fall into that era where they just didn't give a fuck what critics thought about them after their 'hit single.' I love this song so much and highly recommend it! It's the reason why I had to make this list 11 tracks long- that's saying something!
So there you have it. I would have loved to mention so many others because it's so hard to just get in only 11. Big shouts out to "Underwater Love", "Gentle Art", "Naked", "Paths of Glory", "Land of Sunshine", "King for a Day". Ugh! The list can go on.
I'm so excited for some new work from these guys. They broke up what I thought would be indefinitely! I gave up all hope that they would work together ever!- and now they are at it again nearly 18 years later. Cheers, motherfuckers! and God bless America! and the Gimp!
