Getting into some really serious primary research at #leedsartgallery
Reduction Lino Print for scarf pattern. One to three colours any variation. Lino's cut separately for reuse. These examples are on cotton silk blend. Ends will be stitched for use.
Class exhibit! Second year fine art and craft degree at High Melton whitegallery. This year I chose one repeat pattern example for wallpaper and fabric print, showing 6 other examples of colour choice and style. All bespoke work but in my own style and twist. This exhibit will be up for two weeks and provides great feedback and knowledge for future projects.
Using photographs taken of synthetically dyed flowers. I enhanced the outline, then sectioned the tonal colours to use as separate print layers for a reduction Lino print. Using three separate Lino. so can be reused for multiple prints. The difficulty being when only small areas are left to print it leaves possible unwanted print. However as most Lino leave this behind to can become part of the appeal. Showing true hand craft in the work.
This pattern has a cooler more versatile colour palette. Leaving more open space for the lines to breath. There will be a version with full cover but I feel this step is successful in its visual aesthetics.
Bee Pattern development. This worked by double copy using printer, to show a flip image with another layer. The goal behind this is to produce various styles for pattern play while implementing colours for a larger repeat patter. This shows the stages and the possible choices to use along the way. I feel the 'half done' look offers a creative twist that compliments the easy going style of line and colour application. The sharpie use offers an artisan style where the creation can be seen, this becomes part of the attraction. This is now being developed for a reduction screen print
Colour on colour and white on colour silkscreen print trials. Abstracted wings from another images, used as a column repeat pattern. Vertical and horizontal print no flip image. All done by hand. Issues with print consistency and colours changes when placed together. Colour selection changes orientation preferences for location and who may select for wall coverings. Example the light blue and white would suit a young chiles bed room, or a light and airy room. These choices will be narrowed down closer to end product look book.
Paper cutting and layer trials. Exploring ways of using a back ground and top pattern. To achieve a design using bold print, with or with out use of colour. Finding the right balance of line and pattern to produce a final surface design for commercial print.
This subject of bees, is an aesthetic choice and what I am extracting from my search into nature subject. Using insects and flora in my work. The life of the bee right now, with its struggles in population mirrors the life span of perishable art outlets; something that is around for as long as we allow something to be. Wallpaper is an example of how fashion and population interest, effect the life span of outlets of art forms. How our actions and interest effect the life span of ideas, creativity and the world around us.
Abstracting the wings to make repeat pattern. Two columns then reappeared vertical and horizontal.
Enjoying surface designs and patterns is a very human disposition. How we are drawn to colour choices or repulsed. Our minds are set at ease with a pattern that follows flowing movements or challenges our senses buy creating complex, detailed repetition. Our personal tastes are the king in all our decision making, but practical gets in way sometimes. Though over history people have rebuked practicality and the acceptable and made bold choices, contradicting to the fashion of the time and the opinions of their peers. This is the time in fashion, art, architecture; when new ideas are made. Bold fabrics, bold walls, bold buildings. Bold, changing and exceptional.
Print making trials using etching press. Water colour paints used and watered down so not over powering the print. Two etchings done from my bee collection.
Close up to the large print. Each section is it’s own pattern waiting to happen.
Close up on my pastel glaze. New effect in place. So hard to recreate love the way it blends and creates a 'candy' effect. This is three versions @sophiewould Instagram
