This screen print features a wordless narrative about a Huntress that goes on a journey to eventually face and conquer her darkest fears. The ceramic charms that hang by the side of the print correspond to events happening in the story; I wanted them to be almost like magic talismans and help add a physical dimension to the narrative.

Here we have the bloodthirsty wolf that pursues Sol and makes the winter nights longer and darker.

My inspiration behind these pieces I took from a Norse myth about the lengthening days of winter.

Sol the sun Goddess who drives the sun across the sky every day is pursued by bloodthirsty wolves that eventually catch up and eat her, coinciding with the longest night of winter. Sol is eventually reborn in the spring and brings light, life and warmth back to the world once more. The story is about the cycle of the seasons and the cycle of life and death and maintaining optimism in the face of the long nights of winter.

Two book cover designs I made for a collection of Greek Myths. I focused on making the illustrations graphic and eye-catching to help draw attention when they were on a shelf.

The first design features Io a woman who gets transformed into a cow by Zeus who helps eventually lead to Prometheus’s freedom.

The other cover features Daphne who is transformed into a tree to avoid lustful advances.

A double page spread from a fully illustrated book I made for the story ‘Vasilisa the Beautiful’ a Russian fairy tale about a girl who goes to borrow a light from the witch that lives in the forest, Baba Yaga, with the creepy events leading up to and after that event.

Here is my interpretation of the witch’s chicken-legged hut in the forest with the bone fence.

Underneath we have the witch’s two guards, a cat and a dog, that keep Vasilisa trapped inside the witch’s hut. Vasilisa manages to appease them by giving them a pie, a kindness they have never received from the witch. They allow Vasilisa to escape past them for her kindness and Vasilisa is able to regain her freedom.

Two more illustrations from Vasilisa the Beautiful, here we have the Witch herself Baba Yaga, I wanted her to seem fearsome and almost inhuman which is why I chose to exaggerate her features and have her wearing bones.

The other is Vasilisa who is lost in the forest at night on her way to find the witch’s hut, I wanted her to seem unsure and frightened which I think is helped by the trees seemingly closing in on her adding to the distress of her situation.
