I have to say, I am finding this storyline fascinating because it's an example of my favorite dynamic - monster in love. Because there is no doubt Qi Min loves her as much as he can love someone and he risked his life and scuppered his plans temporarily to save her BUT HE IS STILL A MONSTER. Loving someone doesn't make him any less psychotic and also, because he's been so messed up from childhood, his way of loving is the opposite of one anyone can want; he loves her more than his life, he's also textbook abusive. If a person is a monster, it's going to bleed over into every relationship. All these things can coexist and I love that narrative being allowed.
The way it intercuts with her saving him back when.
In a lot of ways, they are a dark mirror to the mains - she saved a hot male stranger (only this is not OK or even redeemable), guy has severe issues from childhood and latches onto her because she is the first person to show him warmth and not for ulterior motives knowing his identity (but he's a psycho so it only leads to horrors for her) etc etc.
Like he normally kills people for breaking cups but here, she had a knife to stab him in the water and he still clings:
That is the most mini line imaginable:
While the mains remain dressed enough to weather winter in Siberia, the supportings are bringing in mini realness. My jaw dropped at this - because it's mini frankness with this director's aesthetic and just !!!!
It is clear BOTH the brothers like to be dommed. Honestly, looks like every hot man in this except possibly hot uncle is on that particular train.
OK, this is so many flavors of fucked up, I cannot even.
The warm light never penetrates, does it?
But also, on a pragmatic note, fucking in the bathtub looks great but all I can think of is you guys are shortly gonna be swimming in...well. Enjoy.
And once again, the warm light never enters. Because nothing can illuminate Qi Min's world.
Poor kids 😭😭😭
2026 the Year of Ruthless Deranged Men in Love
How Dare You!? at the beginning: Teehee, this is a cute little transmigration story and the mains will be pals who have hot pot and laugh together when not trying to play their characters. It's so funny and cute! (ignore that the male lead just killed someone)
How Dare You!? halfway through: would you like present or past horrific trauma? We have both! With a side of psychological horror and a small amount of comedy so that no one gets too depressed watching
It's rare that cdrama Tumblr is in almost unanimous agreement about a show but I have yet to see anyone really hating on How Dare You?! From the script to the directing to the acting, sets, and costumes, everything falls into place perfectly. I finished it last night and still am filled with a warm feeling.
I’ve also finish How dare you?!? Honestly it is the best novel adaptation I’ve seen in a long time. And the censor let so much stuff pass! It’s crazy! Now I wish they would allow the book ending. Plus they shoot scene with their kids so it would have been nice. And I love the epilogue in the book but the censor can stay in the coma for so long… I’m happy we got an end where they meet and recognize each other. It’s honestly the best we can hope for ^^ the show now on my rewatch list for sure!

How Dare You
1000/10 otp chemistry, entertaining plot, and fun ride or die shenanigans
I haven't been so hyped about a cdrama in a long while, going so far as to watching it while it airs, which, I admit, does have its perks because I get to savor more details and nothing feels rushed. It's actually kinda fun, especially when sharing the experience here on tumblr :D
A lot has been said and written about this show, but it really did deliver in a lot of departments, resulting in a well-made and exceptionally acted series with sky-high entertaining value. The plot? Never got boring even for a single second. The premise? Unique for a transmigrator story, the Cdramaland has seen so many of. It's fresh with not one, but two transmigrators (three, if you count Xie Yong'er) and all that meta 2D characters vs. real people discourse that's been going on in the show.
All the characters had enough depth and development (apart from Prince Duan, probably, but his fall was kinda epic and can probably be considered as such). Xie Yong'er went from a flat-ish 2D transmigrator girl to a full-on meimei to Wanyin and fellow schemer to our little team of conspirators. Mr.Bei was consistently awesome - and a transgender character at that! I think it's the first time I've seen one in a cdrama, and done so effortlessly. A-Bai - cute and relevant to the plot, all the scholars - each with their own character and peculiar story.
All the side-characters were actually memorable and well-thought-through, I rooted for them! Xiahou Dan went from a lost-cause suffering puppet emperor who nearly forgot who he was to a revived scheming and plotting modern-ish man with agonizing history who can still fight back. Wanyin went from this lighthearted, gorgeous, and smart woman to a formidable and loving partner, fellow plotter, and a gracious Empress.
Of course, you can't build a story without able antagonists - the Creepiness Award goes to Prince Duan, it's been a while since I was so weirded out by an on-screen character, he got proper serial killer vibes. Murderous Step Mother of the Year Award goes to Empress Dowager - the woman was horrifying almost every time she got screen time, and I applaud the actress who portrayed her, she was truly-madly-deeply hateable, like GoT's Joffrey level of hateability :D
The OTP, Wanyin and Xiahou Dan, had 1000% chemistry, which can make a show even with a lesser plot be memorable and loveable, but this one was fun from beginning till end. We had everything - funny humorous scenes, sweet delicate romance, soft homey married couple vibes, sexy vibes, found family trope vibes, scheming and plotting couples vibes, ride or die vibes, partners in arms and partners in literally everything vibes.
Also, there are guns :D
Seriously, the entertainment value of this show is sky-high. The directing, the costumes, the styling, the acting, the pacing - everything is just so-so good. All the interpersonal relationships are great, and Xiahou Dan is one of the prettiest suffering men I've ever seen. I mean it's a cdrama staple, but he somehow brought it to perfection, not to mention the absolutely stellar acting by Cheng Lei, who showed an incredible range of emotions and micro-expressions. Wang Churan was a very good match and delivered a great performance as well, giving us an equally wide range of personas - from cutesy and love-stricken to smart, resilient, and hellbent on saving her boo no matter the cost.
It's been a wild ride))) The show definitely goes into my top list of best cdramas ever :D
Currently crying my way through the big finale of How Dare You!?
By now there are only the last 2 episodes left for me to watch, but the quality of the whole production and the writing of this drama has always been so high that I'm mostly confident I won't be disappointed by the ending.
One thing I can say with absolute certainty, though, is that this is Cheng Lei's single best acting performance so far. The raw emotions he's displaying in these last few episodes in such a natural and utterly heartbreaking way makes him stand out from quite a lot of his peers, in my opinion, and I really hope he gets to play more demanding roles like these in the future.
Okay, he's down, but not beaten. The humor is still there XD
I am chewing my arms up to my elbows!
Oh the tenderness!!!
This is very very relevant to my interests.
But also - she’s seen him at his maddest and ugliest and she still cherishes him. If anything could ever make him feel safe about being loved for who he actually is and to eventually being able to tell her the truth, it should be this.
That was fantastic!!!
Aaaaa
I don’t know if he flinches from nerves, from thinking he’s not worthy of it or from the sexual trauma he’s got in the novel but ohhhhh
