I am watching/posting enough stuff for this to become necessary again.

First, I read a ton of “traditional” and web novels, mainly period, and watch Asian drama, American, European, and Turkish shows as well as Indian movies and telenovelas.

Second, if you can’t find what I am watching with English subs (less likely for dramas than other stuff I watch), I don’t have secret subs, I am probably just watching in another language.

Third, as I am sure anyone following this tumblr for more than a hot minute figured out, my main interest is in period stuff. It doesn’t mean I don’t watch/read things with a modern setting but I am usually more into period stuff.

Fifth, I am reading a lot (largely fantasy, adult and YA, and also period romance) so there will be some of that on this tumblr.

Sixth, I use the block button liberally and often. I maintain this tumblr to have a good time, no more no less. Anything that interferes with that is not for me.

She is very smart in a lot of ways but she is TERRIBLE at dealing with da'ge - their personalities, interests and ways of interacting are literally opposite. If by some weird quirk this was a real marriage, they'd come to loathe each other even without MRQY in the middle.

Because here she says this to set up the whole "see how much influence I have" to both show da'ge he should be cautious with her but also "see I could use this but don't look how much I care" and also "be careful with your brother he's a danger to himself" but all da'ge hears (understandably) is someone who is boasting of her power and implicitly threatening him, nothing else. He gets his gun out!

Like she says this but he is not processing this as a truce offer, his threat level rises in fact because he does not trust her, all he can see is the manipulation/danger/damage etc

She is being honest but because of his history with her and his protectiveness of his brother and because of what he (reasonably) thinks happened before (which nobody explained to him!), he genuinely asks "why" because it's clear by now he's not capable of believing she has any feeling of genuine nature for anyone. To him, it's like conversing with a serial killer.

The story never forgets that da'ge used to be a marshal and might be again after his mom kicks it. Ultimately, he will do whatever to achieve his goals. In fact, because of everything that happened, he probably went from neutral or "good for them, moving on" attitude he'd have had about her revenge/plans if she was some stranger not involved with his fam to clearly rooting for her cause to fail because he loathes her.

And the conversation keeps falling apart because she thinks she's offering him what he wants (his brother's safety, more power, protection for his fam etc etc) and yes of course he wants that but the problem is he cannot trust anything she says, any deals she offers by now - you cannot have a negotiation if there is zero trust but also a giant amount of loathing.

So lists all these advantages and they are reasonable but he tells her to get out. If he could shoot her right then and there and have MRQY not know and spiral, he'd do it and sleep well at night.

Ultimately, the reason da'ge cannot sympathize her or get his brother, or the whole relationship is because he's too sane. (I mean he's ruthles yes, but he's a very functional dude) and this is actually a big hurdle. They talk past each other in different languages.

Da'ge reads Russian?

Funny thing is the book on the top "Что нам Гекуба?" was clearly picked at random (a quick google search tells me it was published in 1986) BUT the tile is actually oddly appropriate - it's a Russian colloquial loose translation (What is Hecuba to us?) of the the line from Hamlet "What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba?" about not having too much investment about people not related to us. Basically X is going on but it's none of our business as it has no connection to us.

Which is many characters' take on the women's case but also da'ge's attitude to Susu's revenge except for the fact that his brother somehow ended up as one of Hecuba's attendants.

I know I’m still residing in the dumpster but I truly do find the writing to be layered while sticking to the confines of the genre. Because it does take those melo and mini tropes (set them up even) and slowly deconstruct them within this world.

We all love Da’ge. He is a good man who really doesn’t deserve to be saddled with the leads’ insanity. But he’s also the scion of a warlord family and in this world, being “good” doesn’t mean that he’s automatically going to approve of RSS’s revenge. He lets her go so Qingyi doesn’t kill himself.

And Qingyi does glom onto RSS’s revenge plot. But it’s not because he’s suddenly this great feminist or some sense of great morality or w/e —it’s an extension of his unhinged love for RSS. But in some perverse way, having this Huo family revenge for Qingyi to glom onto is the only way he can function.

But also my god Da’ge was absolutely right to plan to send Qingyi abroad to recover his injured. Maybe also consider in patient psychiatric treatment.

Listen the only reason that Murong Qingyi has not stabbed himself through the hand for love is because the opportunity has not presented itself.

the way she arranges him so she can snuggle and he just confusedly lets her lol. but she wants to literally just sleep with him because she doesn't have nightmares when he's around!

i just love how you can see the logical progression, even at breakneck mini pace, of physical and intellectual attraction to emotional attraction and the push and pull between their interest in each other and literally everything else. like obviously they like each other but there's so much in the way of that but the drama is creating so many opportunities for all varieties of intimacy between them. it's so good!

and when he goes to tuck her in more, but he's a smart boy so instead of pulling the blanket up he wraps her in his big ol sleeves which makes her snuggle up even more!

i am just loving this. who'da thunk that the first cdrama otp to trip my feral shipper buttons in months is from a mini.

at what point does willingly watching these scenes become self flagellation? and at what point do i just automatically start adding the disclaimer to all my trop posts that i know this is a tragedy and am viewing every gorgeous romantic beautiful perfect moment through the lens of that knowledge?

look it's that thing where one of them says "beautiful" ostensibly about something else but they're looking at their loved one and you know she's talking about how beautiful he is 🥺
