"Down to the river where I let my baby lie, had a preacher to my left and a sheriff to my right. The hounds were barking mad as they led us through the night, though my baby lay in peace for she had no life to live. Her soul was tearing through the trees, the river screamed her name. The forest did not keep the secret I had tried to hide. Oh, I knew what I had done and the forest knew it too. A shovel and a hatchet were my only friends that night. Whispers through the wilderness and two knees to the dirt, beggin’ Lord have mercy on my soul for I have surely sinned. Handcuffs on my wrists and two lanterns through the dark, I wept in vain and cursed your name as they led me to my grave. Lay me by my baby so forever we will be two souls bound in misery for in death we did not part. Three shots rang through the valley of that very day, two to the sky and one between my eyes. My momma screamed my daddy plead but I had found my peace. What you sow is what you reap and the devil came for me. Six feet deep is where I sleep, the air has left my lungs. Eternity is far too long and it’s got me by the throat. Stood eye to eye with all my lies, the flames were crackin’ whips. Drag me down, to Hell I’m bound. The Lord has left me now."
