Zachary "Zinc" Marino had been a tenth grade chemistry teacher for five years before it happened.
He was well-liked among students, staff, and admin from the start. He was the youngest on his team, but that didn't seem to stop him at all. He made lessons interesting for his students, kept (most) parents happy, and got along well with coworkers.
"He was always so helpful. Running copies, watching other people's classes, staying after school to clean up. Really, you couldn't have asked for a better colleague."

The week of the 25th had been a normal one. Zinc came to school like he always did and set up his class for their lesson. They were working on a project about toxic chemicals.
One student had been pestering Mr Marino for weeks, pretending to choke on their food in order to get the teacher's attention. By now, he knew to ignore them.
So, when he heard the all too familiar sound of exaggerated choking from the back of the room, Mr Marino ignored it.
The chatter fell silent.
Pencils stopped moving.
Someone gasped.
When Mr Marino's head snapped up from his desk, the student was on the ground.
He pled guilty immediately, despite multiple students and fellow teachers rushing to his defense.
"It was an accident. Mr Marino would never let a child die under his care!"
"They had been messing with him for weeks! It's not his fault!"
"He's not a bad teacher!"
"Don't let him go to jail, please!"
Zinc ignored them all. He couldn't even look his kids in the eye.
He had murdered a student. He deserved whatever punishment the judge gave him.
Involuntary manslaughter.
The words hit hard for a man who wouldn't go as far as to swat a fly. Who once held a funeral for a spider because his students were sad it had died. Who agreed to become the drama director so the program wouldn't shut down. Who came to every sports game so they'd always see someone cheering for them.
He came onto Bet and Forgive as a way to repent. Even if he manages to win, his reputation is tarnished forever. He'll never be allowed to step foot in a classroom again. What's the point? He only got six years behind bars. An eternity in Hell would be a much more fitting punishment, at least in his eyes.
The "Sorrowful Scholar" is what they called him. Checks out.
He just hadn't expected to see a familiar face when he got there.
