People stupidly divide one soul into three (well, almost)
Initially, the soul belonged to Chara, and the divine essence (of the player) was not assigned to her, but after the appearance of Frisk, the player was assigned to the soul.
After Frisk possibly dies, the soul is reborn in an alternate world, and Chris becomes the master of the soul, and the player is still assigned to the soul.
So it turns out that Chris can communicate with Chara and Frisk to what extent, which sometimes causes comical moments lol
