Who would you say is the band’s biggest recluse? [Pete:] Me and Patrick are like each other’s hot and cold. When I’m on, he’s off and when he’s on I’m off. We fight all the time! It could be either me or him. I can be the big mouth and he can be really quiet but it flips around, it’s him usually but it comes back to me. Me and Patrick hang out all the time – it’s strange we’re like each others heterosexual soulmates!

Cait: How did the band get started? Patrick: It was pretty much because Pete and Joe had been talking for awhile. Pete was in a hardcore band, and they were talking for awhile or joking about starting a side project. They were already kind of starting something, and I was looking for a band. I had been playing drums up to that point, and I was just looking and I totally just randomnly met Joe, and I bluffed cause I had never sung before. I was like ‘Oh yeah, I can totally sing!’ and I auctually couldn’t at that point. I mean, I didn’t know if I could or not. I was just like ‘Oh, I can do it!’ So they took and chance, and the three of us have been in it from the beginning. About a year ago we got Andy, and at the same time I started playing guitar. We were initally to be a five peice.

Laurren: Can you describe the other band members in three words or less? Patrick: Ohhh. Each individually in three words, or a word each? Laurren: Each individually, if you can. Patrick: I have to add like, a little parenthensis.. Laurren: That’s fine. Patrick: The first word I think of for Andy is animal, and spefically animal from the muppets. The one that plays drums. That’s dead on. PJ (Punchline): Arrival. [everyone laughs] Patrick: So animal… pause the tape for a second. I don’t want to waste space. Laurren: Oh, it’s okay. It’s no problem. Patrick: Andy’s soild. He’s a really solid drummer and he works with drums like they’re an instrument, you know? He’s not just there to like, beat it. Like, he auctually thinks about what he’s writting and how he plays. So animal, soild… Laurren: You don’t have to use 3 words. Patrick: …Hyphenate comic book [comic/book]. That would work too, because he’s got one of the most extenstive comic book collections. Although most of them aren’t really comic books, they’re just graphic novels. Thats Andy. Joe would be goofy. He’s a goofy guy but plesant. Pleasanty goofy. And madman, When he’s jumping and stuff. And he can grow a beard faster than anyone I know, so I would say hairy I suppose. Then for Pete, I’d say charasmatic, brilliant. His appearance and his soical life gets over enthusied, and his auctual intelligence gets under rated. But he’s a very brilliant man and he’s a bro. He’s a bro. Definate bro. Oh, do I have to do myself too? Laurren: Yeah, if you want. And you can’t use short. [laughs] Patrick: Well, short pretty much goes for all of us except Joe. Though I’m by no stretch of the imganaiton the shortest. I’d say for me… musical, just by virute of that’s all I really do, because my life is built around it. Nervous, kind of. Like, I have alot of nervous energy. I’m always doing something. I’m always either in my own little world and shut off from everybody, or im really excited to see everybody. I don’t know. I’m like a little chiquaqua sometimes, you know? Because sometimes I’m shaking because I don’t want to talk to people, but sometimes I just like, pee myself and run around. You know? So musical, nervous and cynical. I’m such a critic, and I hate just about everything under the sun.

Believe in the hype because Fall Out Boy is for real. Having the crowd chant “ONE MORE SONG, ONE MORE SONG” for the second band is rarity and I haven’t seen kids get that excited to see a band like this in a long time. And I also haven’t seen a band that cared so much for their fans; before and after the show you will find members of Fall Out Boy roaming through the crowd talking to kids. The sudden rockstar fame has not phased Fall Out Boy one bit and when asked about this they reply with, “We have nothing better to do.” Overall Fall Out Boy is a great band and will only get bigger.

Patrick: One day a little handsom prince by the name of Joe Trohmen was hanging out around the Gremlin’s lair. The gremlin being Mr. Pete Wentz. They decided that they needed to band together to fight evil. Along their quest they found a lesser gremlin named Patrick Stumph. And they in turn collectively move on. There were battles fought. Many cave trolls slain. Ultimately, they were befriended by a magical wizard who happens to wave his batons and make percussion brillance with it. Somewhere in this massive trilogy our heros take Buffalo by storm and take the castle of Buffalo.

BW: Be that as it may, in my opinion, I feel like a lot of pop punk bands that are in the mainstream, that are on the radio and on MTV, they don’t really have much to say. And it’s all about girls, and breaking up and going to the mall or whatever. So, like you said, bringing the ideals of hardcore, and implementing them into this band, do you think that you guys have a little something more to say? P[ete:] This is the thing, I think that our last album definitely focused on the boy/girl relationships and that was the focus of the thing. It was an easy pit to fall into, I think that’s the basis of all rock n’ roll and it’s the easiest topic to write, especially when that just happened to you. It was like, ‘Oh that’s a situation that just happened to me.’ At the same time, when I dropped out of school to be in this band full time, I was a third year Political Science major. So like, that definitely affected me. Like, we have a t-shirt coming out that’s going to say “Make Mosh Not War”. So, no matter what, we’re going to say what we want. We’re not ever going to be, I don’t think, an out right political band. That’s just not the vibe of this band, but I think that it’s important for people to know that the personal is political, and there’s plenty of people around that are like, ‘this is what’s messed up, because George W. Bush is around and he shouldn’t be around,’ and like they should understand that there is a psychological and sociological reason that George W. Bush was elected, you know. People want to hang out with a frat boy and he’s like a guy who you want to drink beer with, so it doesn’t matter how smart he is or what he thinks about. So, I think that there’ll be personal issues and a more introspective look on this record, but at the same time I don’t think that it’ll be like ‘fuck this’ or ‘fuck that,’ but to an extent I hope that it’ll be more intelligent ya know, but we’re always going to write what we want to write.

i really love all of these snippets, but the third one might be my favourite. patrick puts so much thought into the right descriptors for his bandmates, haha, he’s so sweet. and he describes himself as a chihuahua ten years before pete will describe him in a different interview as a pomeranian. patrick is a tiny nervous puppy no matter the year.
