How are you, really?
Why do I hope for something that will only make me bleed?
To dive into something that will burn me?
-Apurva
The future came and went—
in the mildly discouraging way that futures do.
-Neil Gaiman, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
No one has the luxury of deciding
"when" to travel;
you wait—
prepared to travel
whenever the border is open,
which could be today,
tomorrow,
or next week,
or three, four months from now.
-Izzeldin Abuelaish, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity
The silence was doomed to be deafening,
as it echoed the local hushing of a generation.
-Cathy Burnham Martin, Destiny of Dreams: Time Is Dear
What difference does it make
to the dead,
the orphans
and the homeless,
whether the mad destruction is wrought
under the name of totalitarianism
or in the holy name
of liberty or democracy?
-Mahatma Gandhi
I remember my childhood as a long wish to be elsewhere.
-Louise Glück, Unpainted Door from The Seven Ages
Where do old birds go to die?
- Arundhati Roy, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness
While she could hardly fathom what had just happened to her that night, she reached some conclusions before she fell asleep, certain things now made perfect sense;
Moon River didn’t sound so syrupy, mistletoe wasn’t such a bad idea, and perhaps dating was not such a frivolous waste of time after all.
- E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly, (Gadfly Saga, #1)
There comes a day each September when you wake up and know the summer is over and fall has arrived. The slant of the sun looks different and something is in the air--a coolness, a hint of frosty mornings to follow.
I woke early on the morning of September 24 and reached for a warmer petticoat.
-Ann Rinaldi, Time Enough for Drums
for the hope of it all
-Taylor Swift, from "august"
Falling in love is not an act of will. It is not a conscious choice. No matter how open to or eager for it we may be, the experience may still elude us.
Contrarily, the experience may capture us at times when we are definitely not seeking it, when it is inconvenient and undesirable. We are as likely to fall in love with someone with whom we are obviously ill matched as with someone more suitable. Indeed, we may not even like or admire the object of our passion, yet, try as we might, we may not be able to fall in love with a person whom we deeply respect and with whom a deep relationship would be in all ways desirable. This is not to say that the experience of falling in love is immune to discipline. Psychiatrists, for instance, frequently fall in love with their patients, just as their patients fall in love with them, yet out of duty to the patient and their role they are usually able to abort the collapse of their ego boundaries and give up the patient as a romantic object.
The struggle and suffering of the discipline involved may be enormous. But discipline and will can only control the experience; they cannot create it. We can choose how to respond to the experience of falling in love, but we cannot choose the experience itself.

Waiting
The song I came to sing remains unsung to this day. I have spent my days in stringing and in unstringing my instrument.
The time has not come true, the words have not been rightly set; only there is the agony of wishing in my heart
I have not seen his face, nor have I listened to his voice; only I have heard his gentle footsteps from the road before my house
But the lamp has not been lit and I cannot ask him into my house; I live in the hope of meeting with him; but this meeting is not yet.
-Rabindranath Tagore

All roads lead to you,
even those I took to forget you.

Is this how it goes?
You fall in love, and nothing seems truly scary anymore,
and life is one big possibility?
