yoongi's first love

so i've seen translations of yoongi's solo "first love" floating around, and i noticed that a lot of them interpreted a very important part of the song differently from me... now, this isn't to say that those translations are wrong and i'm right (because yoongi wrote this and obviously, i am not yoongi LOL), but i looked over the lyrics many times and some parts just didn't make sense to me if written out the way i've seen them written out...

it's this part: "but i didn't know that would be the last / you say don't leave like this / don't worry even if i leave / you'll do well on your own / i remember when i first met you / before i knew it you grew up / though we are putting an end to our relationship / don't ever feel sorry to me / i will get to meet you again / no matter what form / greet me happily then" (cr: bts-trans!)

i've seen many translations label the piano saying "don't leave like this," but in my opinion, yoongi's the one saying "don't leave like this" to the piano. here is why...

the whole part afterwards aren't words yoongi is saying to the piano; they're what the piano is saying to yoongi. the piano says, "even if i leave, don't worry, because you'll do well on your own," which goes against "don't leave like this," if the piano is the one saying "don't leave like this."

even if i leave, don't worry, because you'll do well on your own. i remember that time when i first met you; before i realized, you grew up so much. though our relationship is marking its end, don't ever feel sorry towards me, because whatever form i take, you'll see me again; greet me happily again at that time.

the reason why i say this part is piano's words to yoongi is because it says, "before i realized, you grew up so much." in the earlier part of the song, yoongi mentions that he grew up taller than the piano that was once much bigger than him. the piano doesn't ever change or grow up; it always stays the same. the one that ever changes and grows up between the piano and yoongi is yoongi.

this part is so important because yoongi, as everyone can tell, is personifying the piano throughout the whole song; it's his first love that never ever turned him away, no matter what he did, and always reassured him with comforting words, even when he was the one in the wrong. (more on this under the cut!)

his first love, that he once longed for greatly... he began to neglect it during his elementary school days when he grew taller, letting it collect dust on its white jade-like keys. he didn't know its importance back then, because it's always stayed in that same exact spot he'd always seen it, unmoving. (this is similar to how they say we often take our surroundings for granted, be it loved ones or just our lives in general, because they're always the same-- always good to us-- and we don't know what was good until we lose it.) he realizes it now, in the present-- the whole song is written by the present!yoongi, reminiscing the past-- but it's much too late because that was the last time he would be with his piano ("i didn't know that would be the last."). the piano, his first love (or the memories of it, rather), is slipping from his grasp now, and he's asking the piano, "don't leave (me) like this."

i remember that time, during my elementary school days-- the time my height became taller than your own. i began to neglect you, who i once longed for greatly; the image of you, having been tossed aside and collecting dust on top of your white jade-like keys. even then, i didn't know of your importance, because no matter where i was, you were always at that spot, keeping your place... but little did i know that that would be the last; don't leave like this...

you say, "even if i leave, don't worry, because you'll do well on your own. i remember that time when i first met you; before i realized, you grew up so much. though our relationship is marking its end, don't ever feel sorry towards me, because whatever form i take, you'll see me again; greet me happily again at that time."

yoongi's first love-- the brown piano settled on one side in the corner of his memories and in the corner of his childhood house-- is slipping from him, and he asks for it to stay. the piano reassures him that he'll come across it again someday, no matter what form it takes, so he should never feel sorry towards it, even if their relationship is marking its end. (i personally took this as "piano = music as a whole" because music can take any kind of form and yoongi will be meeting it again, one way or another.)

as mentioned earlier, the whole song is present!yoongi reminiscing the past with his first love... he's also reminiscing with it, talking to it, like, "hey, remember back then?" because there are parts where he switches back to present tense, talking to the piano now, in the present.

without you, i'm nothing. the morning we greet together past dawn. don't ever let go of my hand, ever, because i won't let go of you again either. (alternatively: i won't let you slip away from me again either)

[...] so don't you ever let go of my hand-- i won't ever let go of you again, ever-- because you will be there to watch over it all, from the very beginning of my life to its very end.

hearts lost in translation

so i was listening to bangtan's converse high on the way home and i felt the need to make a post about how a lot of bangtan songs are beautifully written, but often lost in translation (not just bangtan songs, but a lot of korean songs). i don't know where to post about it so i came on here (for the first time in forever.mp3) to just write and i don't think anyone cares... but if you wanna read, cool; if not, feel free to just ignore, lmao.

like i'm sure all languages are, korean is often lost in translation. i only know korean and english fluently so i can only speak for these two, but i feel like korean especially gets so much meaning lost when being translated into english. i'm probably a little biased since i'm korean, but i find korean just so beautiful because it can be poetic as heck when used correctly.

i'm sure people have heard that nell songs and epik high songs are difficult to translate. their lyrics are usually very "poetic," in the sense that they can say a lot of things in a matter of a few words, that would require a lot of words in english to describe the same thing. because of this, a lot of the meanings often get lost in tranlsation to avoid being too wordy, and it's not nearly the same and amazing as it is in korean.

i may be wrong, but i believe this comes from korean being full of... ~implications~. someone could say a few words, but those few words are related to soooo many things that it could mean a whole lot without those meanings having to be written out because they're just... implied. everyone already knows that this certain word is related to a, b, and c, that it doesn't need to be detailed to convey the ~feel~ of it. (i imagine japanese is similar because one, korean and japanese are already pretty similar in terms of syntax and vocabulary, and two, my friend, who loves murakami, once told me that she feels japanese literature is sometimes "wordy," which i'm taking it as that the original probably isn't wordy, but the translations are.)

to show an example, i'm going to be using one of my favorite lines from converse high by bangtan. (this is probably going to be a long explanation post and a lot of me just blabbing, but i'm hoping you guys can bear with me. ;;; i put a tl;dr section towards the end of the post if you just wanna skip! ; u ; heh...)

INTRO:

one of my all-time favorite lines from bangtan songs is the pre-chorus in converse high (1:18-1:33 and 2:27-2:45); i think it's so pretty and it makes me feel so fluttery and i always feel the need to explain to my friends why it's so pretty because it's too beAUTIFUL FOR ME TO JUST ENJOY IT BY MYSELF, LOL. hopefully i can do it justice. ;;; HERE WE GO.

SO THE LINES ARE:

스치면 인연 스며들면 사랑이라고 누가 말했었는데 (FIRST SENTENCE) 넌 아예 내게 물들어버렸나 니가 좋아 (SECOND SENTENCE) (그래도 컨버스로우는 신지 마)

AND ONE OF THE MORE POPULAR TRANSLATIONS OF THESE LINES ARE:

you pass by and become connected you enter in and become love someone said that before but i am just colored by you i like you (but still, don't wear converse lows)

these translations are definitely not incorrect; i hope no one gets the wrong idea! these are correct translations-- i'm not saying they're wrong-- but i'm going to add in and explain to you guys what a few of these words imply without having to say so and why it's so pretty (to me, anyways).

FIRST SENTENCE:

스치면 인연 (seuchimyeon inyeon)

when searching the verb "스치다 [seuchida]" (스치면 [seuchimyeon] in the lines) in a ko-en dictionary, it translates to "graze, brush." i think "graze" is probably the more accurate translation, because "스치다" basically means to touch or brush lightly in passing.

the word "인연" translates to "tie, connection, relationship," and is even sometimes translated as "fate" or "destiny" in songs. i'm not all too sure which one comes closest in meaning to the word "인연," because it's really all of them; it's a word that is used to describe a tie/connection/relationship between two (or more) people, implying that it was made by fate or destiny.

"스치면 인연" most likely comes from a korean saying "옷깃만 스쳐도 인연이다," which translates to "even if only the mere collars on (people's) clothes brush past one another, it's (considered) a tie/connection/relationship/fate/destiny," roughly meaning that even the people you just quickly brush by in this world are considered a tie/connection/relationship in your life by fate/destiny.

스며들면 사랑 (seumyeodeulmyeon sarang)

so here's where the ~implications~ come in big time, lol...

the verb "스며들다 [seumyeodeulda]" (스며들면 [seumyeodeulmyeon] in the lines) translates to "to soak into/through something"... this isn't incorrect. BUT! a lot of korean verbs are passive, meaning, rather than for someone or something to "soak into" something (active), "스며들다" is more "being soaken into" something (passive). this looks strange because in english, we would use the word "soak" in sentences like "the water is soaking her shirt," or alternatively, "her shirt is being soaked by water." heck, soaken's probably not even a word! but it's a word now as i describe the usage of the verb "스며들다" in the sentence: "the water is being soaken into her shirt."

NOT ONLY THAT. "스며들다" implies that something is being soaked slowly and the thing soaking is even spreading... think about slowly dipping a garment into water... the water slowly "being soaken into" the shirt and slowly spreading across the garment.

HOPEFULLY THIS IMAGE WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE FIRST PART OF THE PRE-CHORUS ALTOGETHER:

스치면 인연 스며들면 사랑이라고 누가 말했었는데 (seuchimyeon inyeon seumyeodeulmyeon sarang irago nuga malhaesseotneunde)

if i were to translate this sentence in a more literal sense, it would be like... "someone once said that if brush past, it's a connection-- love, if soaken in." as i said before, korean implies a whole lot; we're not told directly by words what's brushing past and what is being soaked in (and being soaked into whom). it's just a whole bunch of fill in the blanks and can apply to pretty much anything... but the implications are there.

if i were to put in the implied meanings into this sentence (in parentheses), it would be like... "someone once said that if (people) brush past (each other), it(the people)'s a connection (by fate)-- love, if (they are) soaken in(to each other/into each other's hearts)."

a more polished version of this sentence to fit and make sense in an english sentence would be like... "someone once said that if you lightly brush past another, it's fate-- love, if they're soaken into you." (them being "soaken into you" implies that they're becoming a part of you.)

SECOND SENTENCE:

넌 아예 내게 물들어버렸나 니가 좋아 (neon aye naege muldeureobeoryeotna niga joha)

ALL RIGHT, SO. in this sentence, the word that implies a lot is the verb "물들다 [muldeulda]" (물들어버렸나 [muldeureobeoryeotna] in the lines), which translates to "be influenced[affected], be tainted," but it also holds the meaning of to "be[get] dyed, be[get] colored, be tinged." chances are, they probably meant the first definition, but it doesn't stop the fact that people think of the second definition as well when hearing the word "물들다."

similar to "스며들다," "물들다" (the one that holds the meaning of "to be colored") has implications of something "being soaken into" and spread across. remember the image of water "being soaken into" the shirt in the first sentence? well, think of a colored water this time. or watercolor paint "being soaken into" a white canvas. that's the type of image someone gets in their head when they hear the verb "물들다" in korean. (even if they meant the first definition, both definitions have a similar concept anyways, in my opinion. to "be influenced" is similar to a shirt being soaked by water; shirt = person being influenced/tainted, water = person doing the influencing/tainting.)

not as important, but the word "아예" translates to "altogether, entirely, throughout."

i would translate this second sentence as... "i wonder if you've completely colored me, because i like you."

TL;DR? (CONCLUSION)

I'M SORRY THIS IS SO LONG and if you skipped down here, you're missing a lot of details, but that's okay!!! (that's why i made the tl;dr!) and if you've read up until here, that's grEAT; thank you very much for reading!!!

putting together the two sentences i've translated above, the pre-chorus is basically this (in my opinion):

someone once said that if you lightly brush past another, it's fate-- love, if they're soaken into you. then i wonder if you've completely colored me whole, because i like you.

WHY IS THIS SO PRETTY??? because he's saying that people have said if someone soaks into you-- in other words, becomes a part of you-- then it's love... but you didN'T JUST SOAK INTO HIM; YOU SOAKED INTO HIM AND DOWNRIGHT COLORED HIS ENTIRE BEING WITH YOUR EXISTENCE. HE'S SAYING, "OH, IF THAT'S THE CASE, THEN HAVE YOU SOAKED INTO ME AND ALSO COMPLETELY COLORED ME WHOLE WITH YOUR OWN COLORS (YOUR EXISTENCE, BASICALLY) BECAUSE I SEEM TO LIKE YOU" AND THAT'S !! ! !! POETIC AND ROMANTIC.

SIGHS. i'm sorry i'm not very good at explaining things. LOL. and i'm sorry this is a mess (i'm a mess). it really is pretty in korean and i don't think english can do it justice... but i tried my best to explain and i hope !! ! ! other people get all fluttery in the heart, too, when they listen to this part from now on... ; u ; because i... love it...
