Modern and Contemporary literature sounds so interesting! I'm currently doing English literature and considering doing an MA in a similar specialty. Do you have any rec's or texts you've studied that have stayed with you/you particularly enjoyed?
Also, love your photography so much! Your monthly "recent moments" always inspire me so much, you have such beautiful colour grading <3
it is!! twentieth century lit and theory is my shit fr. for my MA, i chose varied modules for my different interests within modern/contemporary lit, i did a module on modernism - some fun texts were elizabeth bowen's the last september, jean rhys' voyage in the dark, ts eliot's four quartets, and woolf's between the acts, did a module on historicising contemporary texts - enjoyed texts like jg ballard's the atrocity exhibition, angela carter's the passion of new eve, pat barker's union street, jeanette winterson's the passion, and alan hollinghurst's the swimming pool library, did a module on postcolonial literature theories and genres - loved ayi kwei armah's the beautyful ones are not yet born, jm coetzee's life & times of michael k, and selected south african poetry, and did a module on twenty first century lit and culture - enjoyed bernadine evaristo's girl woman other, zadie smith's on beauty, adichie's americanah, wg sebald's austerlitz, ben lerner's 10.04, and selected short stories by ali smith ! :)
aw thank you! i love curating those little recaps of my days <3
hi! how do you manage to read soooo many books per year?
i think it's mainly bc of my studies! in college i did alevel english lit, philosophy and politics, then i did an english literature undergraduate degree, and i'm currently finishing up a master's degree in modern and contemporary literature, which has meant a LOTTTT of reading haha, i do also obviously love reading outside of that too but the overall high level probably stems from all of that weekly
muslim girl to another, how do you handle plans with ppl from uni where it involves alcohol/not so halal settings? i always feel bad for having to decline bc some plans really sound great but there's always alcohol involved and i feel like i never click well with my classmates bc of this, specially bc im the only muslim person they know :(
hi! i completely get what you mean, and i felt the same way bc of it at uni, especially as i did my undergrad at a very white city. i'll be honest i am not necessarily the most social person, like i didn't really make a whole group of friends at undergrad or during my masters, so when i did see my friends it was usually just like 1-1 or just with a few people like at a cafe or a park or a food place or on campus and it was just understood it wouldn't be in those kinds of settings. i was a commuting student as well as being introverted from a smaller uni, so those were definitely factors which meant i didn't end up in uncomfortable situations or settings. there really is an isolating feeling being muslim during uni and wanting a social life but feeling distant to that experience and what is so normalised and integral to it but i think you just have to keep steadfast in your boundaries, do/go to places you feel comfortable in with people you feel comfortablr around, and still try and get involved with events that are aligned with your interests bc the right people and spaces will understand your comfort and needs <3
