Did they seem too real to you?
They were kids that I once knew
Now they’re all dead hearts to you.

20. — wishing
“Aren’t you a bit old to be that superstitious?”
He levels a withering gaze over his shoulder at the meteor-streaked sky outside the window, and at his company. It’s baffling to think people have clung onto a tradition of expecting chunks of rock falling from space to make dreams come true into the nineteenth century.
Or maybe it’s not—not when the masses still pray to a ‘Holy Father’ who doesn’t give a damn about them.
Make a wish, huh?
Two small figures huddled by the window, watching pinpricks of light shoot across the velvet blackness of the night sky.
“What did you wish for, Ciel?”
“If I tell you, it won’t come true.”
“They’re just shooting stars. There’s nothing in this world that grants wishes without repayment. If you want something, find a way to make it happen yourself.”

The weirdest thing about historical trans people is that today we can look at pictures of some of them and go “oh, yeah, no, they don’t pass at all, how did they get away with that for forty fuckin years without hormones when I can’t even go an afternoon”
And like i’m pretty sure the answer is that clothing was so heavily, heavily gendered back then that people just like. It never occurred to anyone that someone wearing a suit could possibly be not-a-dude. If someone’s wearing a dress then they’re obviously a woman. Something is weird about this situation but any question I could ask would be super rude anyway so
This is actually 100% the correct answer from what I know.
I took a class on Shakespeare and Gender and we talked a lot about how Elizabethan clothing was so vital to defining who someone was as a person as far as gender, class, etc (look up the Sumptuary Laws, which regulated what colors and fabrics different classes could wear. This started breaking down as the wealthy but non-noble merchant class emerged and it became impossible to stop them from wearing nice expensive clothes.)
You can see it in the language of the crossdressing plays, where the women in disguise will sometimes refer to themselves as men while dressed as such. As You Like It is a particularly good example.
Yep! I can’t find the exact book I read it in, but I know we’ve at least a few examples of AFAB sailors who were stripped to the waist to be flogged, and the only comment anyone made being that Seaman so-and-so had a ‘fatty chest’.
