The park was always quiet at night.
The world outside seemed to fade away as the soft hum of the city grew distant.
The only sound that remained was the gentle rustling of the trees and the rhythmic tapping of your sneakers on the street. It had become your nightly ritual, an escape, a way to clear your mind after the chaos of the day.
You had no particular reason for walking at this hour, but something about the calm of the night, the solitude, soothed you. The park was just close enough to your apartment that you could get there without too much effort, yet far enough that it felt like a different world.
One night, as you strolled along the usual path, you noticed a figure in the distance, a person standing by the fountain. He was tall, with dark hair and a striking presence, almost as if he was part of the night itself. You didn't think much of it at first. It wasn't unusual to see others in the park late at night, especially in a city like this, but there was something about the way he stood there, staring at the water, that caught your attention.
The next night, you found yourself walking the same path again, and there he was, standing in the same spot. He didn't seem to notice you, or at least didn't acknowledge your presence, but you couldn't help but feel a strange pull toward him. Maybe it was the way the moonlight illuminated his features, or maybe it was just the solitude of the night, but for some reason, you couldn't shake the feeling that you were drawn to him.
As the days passed, you began to notice him more. He was always there, by the fountain, around the same time every night. He never seemed to leave, and for some reason, you found yourself looking forward to seeing him.
You didn't know why. Maybe it was the mystery of him, or maybe it was simply the shared quiet of the late hours that connected you without words.
On one particular evening, you decided to try something different. Instead of walking past as you usually did, you slowed your pace as you approached the fountain, glancing at him out of the corner of your eye.
This time, he noticed you.
"Do you always walk here at this time?" His voice was soft, but there was something intriguing about it. You stopped, surprised that he was the first to speak. "Yeah..." you replied, trying to keep your voice steady. "It's...peaceful here at night."
He nodded, his eyes lingering on you for a moment before he spoke again. "I've seen you before. You come here every night, don't you?" You blinked, slightly. "I guess so" you said, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I don't really have anywhere else to go after work."
There was a brief silence before he spoke again. "I come here for the same reason. It's the only time I can think clearly. The world feels different at night."
You smiled faintly. "I know what you mean."
The conversation fell into a comfortable silence, and for a moment, you both just stood there, listening to the sounds of the night. It wasn't awkward, just... peaceful.
After that night, you started noticing each other more. You'd walk past the fountain, and he'd look up from his spot, a small smile tugging at his lips as if he'd been waiting for you. You'd exchange a few words, nothing much, but each night felt like a small step toward something you couldn't quite put your finger on. You learned his name, Haku Shota, and that he worked as a graphic designer, often staying up late to work on projects. He found peace in the quiet of the park, just as you did.
As the weeks passed, the quiet exchanges grew into longer conversations. You talked about everything and nothing at all your favorite film, your frustrations with work, the strange quirks of the city. Each night, it felt like you were slowly knowing him better, not just of him, but of yourself as well.
There was something about him that made you feel safe, like you could speak freely without judgment.
One night, the weather took a turn. It started to rain softly, at first just a drizzle, but soon the drops became heavier, quickly soaking the ground, you hesitated, considering whether to leave or stay.
He just stood there, watching the rain fall.
"Are you going to leave?" you asked, standing a few feet away, feeling the droplets collect in your hair. He smiled slightly, shaking his head. "I don't mind the rain.Sometimes, it's nice to just let it wash over you."
Something about his words struck you deeply, and before you knew it, you were standing beside him, your shoes splashing in the growing puddles. "You're right," you said softly. "It's kind of nice, actually."
For the first time in a while, you didn't feel the need to rush away from something, to escape. The rain felt refreshing, grounding. And standing there next to him, you couldn't help but feel a spark a quiet, steady pull in your chest that you hadn't acknowledged until now.
The two of you stood there for what felt like an eternity, letting the rain fall around you. When it finally slowed, Shota turned to you, his eyes catching the streetlight, glistening in the dim glow.
"I don't think I've ever walked with someone in the rain before" he said quietly, his voice almost shy. You looked up at him, your heart beating a little faster. "I'm glad it's with you," you said without thinking.
He paused, and for a moment, there was nothing but the soft echo of rain around you. Then, Shota's gaze softened, and his lips curled into a gentle smile. "I'm glad it's with you too."
From that night on, the park became your shared space. Your walks no longer felt like a solitary routine, but something you looked forward to every evening. With each step, you both grew closer, the distance between two strangers shrinking until it became something you both recognized as more.
One night, under the moonlight, Shota stopped walking and turned to you, his hand brushing against yours. The touch was tentative, but it sent a wave of warmth through you.
"I don't want to be a stranger" he said softly, his eyes meeting yours with quiet sincerity.
You smiled, the butterflies in your stomach now impossible to ignore. "I don't want to be that either."
And with that, under the soft glow of the moon, two strangers became something more. And the park once a place of solitude became your shared space, a place where love could blossom quietly, under the stars.
