He's seeing things, catching glimpses of nothing between the lightning above. Fantasies of sailors who swear they've seen beautiful creatures while on the cusp of death. If his lungs weren't full of seawater, he'd laugh at how he's no better than those delusional men, how he's holding onto what sliver of hope he has left as his consciousness fades. And then, finally, pure darkness.

When a sudden storm knocks Kayn overboard, he accepts his fate to the ocean's depths. He wakes, however, in a seaside cave, injured but very much alive, and not as alone as he thinks. Someone is helping him — tending to his wounds and bringing him food only while he's unconscious and resting, but he never sees his mysterious helper directly. Not until one day, he catches a glimpse of something that he can only describe as otherworldly, and not at all human.
