Social Media can be a powerful tool for businesses, with more and more companies establishing or expanding their online presence. Customers expect easy and fast access to their favourite brands these days, and social media provides some of the best platforms for doing so. Here are some of the ways businesses use Social Media to flourish
Attract Customers - Ads, sponsored posts, exclusive deals and targeted marketing are some of the things businesses use to attract a new customer following on platforms like instagram and facebook. WIth more large retailers establishing themselves online, it’s never been easier to shop while you scroll, and following a brand on social media can be as easy as ‘liking’ a page or post. Seeing what mutual friends or favourite influencers like is a sure fire way to direct people towards their next purchase. After that, the business can make sure to...
Ensure customer loyalty - Up-to-date information, exclusive releases, flash sales and giveaways are all strategies designed to keep customers coming back for more. A social-media savvy business also knows that good Customer Relations are vital for survival on the web, and quick responses to questions or complains in the comments will often stave off a bad review on your page. Avoiding bad reviews and collecting customer feedback can build visible trust in your brand, and is appealing to new customers.
Market Research - As well as looking at local customers, social media can give a company an idea of how they would fare on the international markets, and where there might be gaps their product can fill. It’s also cheaper and easier than traditional marketing - in particular, post-sharing spreads a company’s product or idea with minimal financial or physical effort on their part. Â
Increase traffic - Successful social media accounts can increase the number of visitors to a company’s website, through following links on marketing posts or searching for the business online.Â
Brand Development - All of the above strategies can help a company to fine-tune their brand, values, and aesthetic to appeal to the widest demographic, which in turn will...
Increase Revenue through new and returning customers, and advertising. In turn, the amount of traffic to your site may affect your Search Engine Optimisation ranking, leading to your business appearing higher in eg. Google search results.
Recruit Staff - Social media recruitment site LinkedIn is a great place to start looking for qualified staff for any business, with links to online CVs and references, but smaller businesses can also advertise job opportunities on twitter and facebook, and reach a larger audience than they previous could with print media.
Monitor Competition - Finally, while your business is on social media, so is everyone else’s! Social Media makes it easy to keep an eye on your competitor, and keep abreast of new products and developments in whatever industry you work for.Â
Social Media isn’t just for individuals posting selfies and tagging themselves at fun events, it can also be used to help the local community. Here are some ways Social Media can be a benefit to society as a whole:
Fundraising and Donations -Â Â Social Media can be a powerful tool when it comes to raising funds for local charities, groups and events. Links to GoFundMe.or JustGiving are easily shareable through most major social media platforms, and make donating easy (especially if your social media account is linked to your bank...)Â
Public Support - It’s possible to reach out to hundreds or even thousands of people at once to raise support for a community issue, including those who have relocated or emigrated but may still have a vested interest in local issues. Posts are quickly and easily shared by members of a community and their mutual friends, and end up having a huge reach in some instances. Missing dog posts in particular will quickly mobilise a community and beyond.
Resource and Information Sharing - Similarly, posting information about locally available resources, opportunities, clubs and groups, or even classes is simple online, especially as a member of a specific group dedicated to your area or community. Towns and cities often have multiple facebook groups where people can congregate and communicate based on shared interests or even just geographical location.Â
Communicating and Connecting - An online group for your local community, or even your street, can help to introduce neighbours, friends, and local services, particularly if a user is unable to leave the house regularly. Online discussions and meetups can be scheduled, or used to schedule in-person events. Online networking can lead to ‘real life’ friendships.
Inspiring the Community to Come Together - An active group or a widely-shared post can often reach and inspire members of the community who otherwise may not have known-about or participated in an event, particularly if they can see some of their mutual friends are involved!
58% of the world’s population has a social media account in 2021. People use personal social media for a variety of reasons:
Communication - whether it’s keeping in touch with old friends from school, family members in far-flung countries, or your mum two streets over, Social Media provides a fast and easy means of communication between account-holders. People update their statuses and blogs to keep their social network informed, and upload photos and videos in their thousands, providing a (carefully curated) snapshot of their life as it unfolds. Direct Messaging comes as standard with many social media platforms, and is a convenient way to carry on private conversations.
Networking - Social media can help connect old and friends and new, through ‘mutuals’, groups, and occasionally just random friend requests. Groups and Networks provide an easy way to connect to people with same interests, and keep up-to-date with your faves.
Shopping and sharing - With the influx of businesses and sellers to platforms like facebook and instagram, it’s never been easier to shop on Social Media. Targeted ads bring products to your screen with minimal effort, and more and more businesses are moving their presence online. Click to buy, and you can also read other users’ reviews on an assortment of goods and services, or leave one of your own to recommend your new must-have item to the next unwary shopper.
News and Entertainment -Â From web-based content available on YouTube to major television companies launching new programming through facebook, media entertainment in all its forms now has a place online, and fans who want interact with it through their Social Media. Dropping new trailers, or answering twitter questions, or hosting a live-streaming Q&A can net new fans and solidify old ones. Online gaming (MMOs and MOBAs) lets players from all over the world come together in virtual arenas to knock seven bells out of one another, while voice and text chat keep them connected to their allies (and their enemies).
News stories often also break on the internet as they do in ‘real world’ media outlets, if not before, and trending on twitter is the surest way to get a story out there. Likes and shares can proliferate digital information through the web faster than the more traditional routes of TV and radio, although it’s always wise to bear in mind some version of the modern adage “’ust because it’s on the internet, doesn’t mean it’s true.

In the banking concept of education, knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to know nothing. Projecting an absolute ignorance onto others, a characteristic of the ideology of oppression, negates education and knowledge as processes of inquiry.
