Social Media isn’t just for individuals posting selfies and tagging themselves at fun events, it can also be used to help the local community. Here are some ways Social Media can be a benefit to society as a whole:
Fundraising and Donations - Social Media can be a powerful tool when it comes to raising funds for local charities, groups and events. Links to GoFundMe.or JustGiving are easily shareable through most major social media platforms, and make donating easy (especially if your social media account is linked to your bank...)
Public Support - It’s possible to reach out to hundreds or even thousands of people at once to raise support for a community issue, including those who have relocated or emigrated but may still have a vested interest in local issues. Posts are quickly and easily shared by members of a community and their mutual friends, and end up having a huge reach in some instances. Missing dog posts in particular will quickly mobilise a community and beyond.
Resource and Information Sharing - Similarly, posting information about locally available resources, opportunities, clubs and groups, or even classes is simple online, especially as a member of a specific group dedicated to your area or community. Towns and cities often have multiple facebook groups where people can congregate and communicate based on shared interests or even just geographical location.
Communicating and Connecting - An online group for your local community, or even your street, can help to introduce neighbours, friends, and local services, particularly if a user is unable to leave the house regularly. Online discussions and meetups can be scheduled, or used to schedule in-person events. Online networking can lead to ‘real life’ friendships.
Inspiring the Community to Come Together - An active group or a widely-shared post can often reach and inspire members of the community who otherwise may not have known-about or participated in an event, particularly if they can see some of their mutual friends are involved!
