Native American Turquoise Petit Point Squash Blossom Necklace by Zeita Begay. This is Navajo made in Zuni style. Traditional squash blossom necklaces have become synonymous with Southwestern Native American Indian jewelry. These unique and beautiful silver necklaces were originally created by the Navajo, with origins dating back to the 1870's. Rumor has it that the Navajo people chose this design due to the pomegranate decorative element of the colonial Spanish. The Navajo artisans placed the squash blossom petal beads on a beaded silver necklace, attached a naja pendant to the bottom and the beautiful squash blossom necklace was created. In the beginning, all Navajo squash blossom necklaces were crafted entirely in silver and were worn by both Navajo and Pueblo men and women. Starting in the early 1900s, they began incorporating turquoise, coral and other elaborate designs into the necklaces, giving each one its own unique look. Styles of the squash blossom necklace will vary depending on the artist and tribe.

It was first described in 1837 and named for the locality of Variscia, the historical name of the Vogtland, in Germany.
