Life's Illusions, I Recall- Chapter 2: Wormwood
Maybe he knew exactly what he should do next, and he couldn’t make himself do it.
He wanders into places that afternoon he has no business being, but can convince himself are relevant enough to waste his time on. He goes to the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Museum. He goes into a bar with the Indiana flag in the window. He stops by the library to look through old newspapers. For what, exactly, he isn’t sure — a big headline that says “Child Killer’s Victim Moves to Sagatauk”, maybe. That’s the only way he was going to make any headway with his head screwed on sideways like this.
Mike gives up and stops for lunch at the bar next to the library. He orders a grilled cheese and a beer. They seat him outside in the warm summer sunshine. It’s a nuisance to him as he spreads out his case files over the table. He has to use his utensils to pin them down so they don’t blow away in the breeze.
He has, maybe, the first smart idea he has had all day, and he decides to go through the files looking for information on each of the boys to determine if they have any visual similarities. If the creep had a type. That could at least be something to go off of.
Mike removes his glasses with a heavy sigh and takes a swig of his beer. So many fucking names. Little boys. Many of them had dark hair and dark eyes. It easily could have been him if he happened to live in the same town in the 1980s. He rubs his thumb over the two names the FBI redacted. The two survivors. One of them is his interviewee. @souverian-are-we
