“Well, it’s not like anybody put a gun to my head, Buck.” 

Steve reaches up to rub at his beard for a brief moment, adding, “Besides, it’s handy when you’re a wanted criminal in the majority of the international community. No one pictures Captain America with a beard. He’s clean-cut, clean-shaven, all-American.”

Realizing his words are heavy with both sarcasm and cynicism, Steve chooses to lighten things up. After all, it’s a long-overdue reunion. The last thing he wants to do is revisit the reasons for being in hiding over the last two years.

“Anyway, I thought you’d like it, at least.” 

Bucky arched a brow at Steve’s words. Every faded memory he had of Steve he had been clean shaven. Even when they had been young and Steve had actually tried to grow facial hair. A small smiled curved on the soldier’s lips as the memory came into a foggy state of view. It had been patchy -- a few scattered hairs here and there and it had taken him a week to convince him that it wasn’t going to grow and he needed to shave it. Try again when you’re older, Punk. 

It was strange what things he could remember and what things he couldn’t. “Didn’t say I didn’t,” Bucky said softly. “Just never thought I’d see the day you’d actually be able to grow one in.”

“You could call be at any time and I’d drop anything if you needed me.”

“I know that I need you, but sometimes the feeling doesn’t seem reciprocated.”

“I’m pathetic, because I go to you for everything, but you’d pick someone over me any day.”

“I didn’t tell anyone else I was leaving… You deserved to know though.”

“Isn’t in terrifying that we both couldn’t go without the other?”

“My friend needs to see I’m dating someone so they’ll stop including me in blind dates–yes, I know we’re not dating, but still.”

“Can you come over so I don’t feel so alone anymore?”

“You ran to get here this quickly?!”

“I need you.”

Of course he would know that. James wasn’t sure what to do -- if he called SHIELD they would capture him as well. But he had seen this man -- thing -- on the news. He took a step back, ready to run.

“If we don’t have the space, we can find away to change that.”  She shrugged, sliding her arms around James’ waist.  “And I could probably stand to spend a little less time at work anyway.  You could take it with you when you go running with Steve, and we could take it for walks in the park.”

“So,” James smiled as he wrapped his arms around her in return. “A new dog. A new place with more room. Anything else I should add to our list? We can go look at dogs today if you would like.”

Elena whimpered, and couldn’t help but lay her head on his shoulder. She hated being so weak, so useless. But she couldn’t do anything about it. She didn’t even hear his words, the world going in and out until she was gone.

“Elena Cordelia Jackson. Twenty six, at age sixteen, she was experimented on and ended up growing two wings out of her back. Guess Hydra wanted them back.” Fury explained, pacing the room. “Suffered a minor blood infection and blood loss. Not to mention two appendages being torn from her body. Question is, what do we do with her now?” He asked the others, before stopping. “Barnes, you found her. What do you want to do?”

Elena winced, opening her eyes to bright blue walls. Wires and tubes ran everywhere on her body as she laid back. But that’s what stopped her. She was lying back on the bed. She never could before.

She couldn’t feel anything. They were gone. Her wings, that made her who she was were gone. She felt the tear slide down her face as she laid there in the quiet. She never needed somebody so much until now.

“What do I wanna do with her?” James looked at Fury like he had grown a second head. “She’s not a pet, Fury. She’s a human being, whether she has wings or not. We can’t just put her in a pound somewhere or put her to sleep.”He took a deep breath, calming down as much as he could.

“Let her heal. And then find out what she wants to do.” He stepped over to her bed to check on the monitors and tubes. “She’s the one that went through this -- and will continue to.”

“Well, you be surprise that I don’t used it to fight…well only when I am fighting for my life.” Mars looked up, patted the black dog that was big enough that it each to her hip. “I’m a elemental witch, one who is connected to the elements.”

“Elemental witch?” he asked curiously, he didn’t know there was more than one type of witch. He assumed they were all the same.

So stubborn.  She should have expected that, of course.  Sighing, in equal parts frustration and resignation, Jane took half a step forward.  She was careful to remain non-threatening, but alert.  “My name is Jane.  What do you remember, James?”

He grit his teeth. “Remember from what? From my time with Hydra? From when I was on the run? Or do you mean before my life became a hell hole?”

Tori looked up to the man and shook her head, “Yeah, damnit, I’m fine, stupid ass broken curb” she answered with frustration. She was most mad that her leg was now scraped and starting to hurt. 

James carefully helped her stood and step back from the street. “Yeah, they really need to fix these things.”
