What's All This Fuss About?
Oh, sweetie, what's all this fuss about? I can see you're having so much fun playing, but uh-oh! Mommy smells something stinky. Yes, she does! Come on, it's time for a fresh bum!
Hey! What's gotten into you, squirming and wiggling around like that! Are you trying to get away? You silly goose! I guess it's a good thing Mommy's got you safe and secure in your pen.
So, can you use your words and tell Mommy why you're being so huffy about a routine diaper change? Well, crinkle butt?
Uh-oh! Is someone thinking they're not Mommy's baby? I hope we're not toddling down that path again, are we? Maybe Mommy should get out your spiked booties again, hmm?
Gosh, could you imagine if Mommy just let you be big again? Let you run around without a diaper? Oh dear! What a mess that would be!
Aww, yeah, okay, okay, I can see you're having some big feelings, baby. Teasing you is just so natural now. But, Mommy understands, sometimes you may feel a little doubt creeping in about how silly this all is, hmm?
I get it, no, I do. While I don't really have those doubts anymore, I often find myself reflecting on how far we've come, and sometimes, when I look at you and think how you're often so… settled, so content, it feels like a lifetime ago we were at the beginning. Teetering on the edge of something neither of us fully understood. There were moments, weren't there? Moments when turning back felt… possible, we often saw glimpses of that normal path leading back to the familiar, back to the regular.
But we didn't take it. We kept going. A crinkly crawl forward, a wobbly step further, each new diaper taped around your hips was a renewed bond, with an understanding of its intended purpose, and further solidifying your role. It was like… like the path behind us was a faint trail of crumbles down your bib. It seemed playing like this was relatively low risk and novel; there was no single dramatic transforming instance, but we just continued, and subtly it became normal.
Look, I know reflecting on this has got you agitated. But you have to realize, baby, even if, by some miracle, we could rewind this nursery rhyme. Even if we could somehow unmake these changes, and peel back all those soggy layers… what then? What kind of life would that be? For either of us? We’ve both seen and experienced too much, haven’t we? We know too much. Just look at us now, there’s no more pretending that this was all just a phase. No, really, just take a minute, look around, look at where you are right now. I want you to think of how long it's been. I know it's easy to forget how much time has passed, but you're just not suited for that regular adult life anymore, babe. Besides, the way I feel so much purpose being your Mommy, I think our old normal life was always destined for the diaper pail.
Come on, now. Give me a smile. Aww! Mommy's proud of you, though. Yeah, honestly, you seem to be doing much better these days. You haven't put up a fuss like this in months. Sure, these slight setbacks were always expected. But these... moments of shame and doubt seem to be getting further apart. I think we're closer than ever. So, I promise I'll keep doing my part, and just keep reinforcing our lifestyle, before you know it, there won't be a second thought. All these ideas and talk of being a normal adult will just seem so silly, I promise.
Now, now, don't give Mommy that grumpy face. It's just a quick change, and then you can go right back to playing. Look what Mommy has! It's your little blue bear! And you know, like Mommy, she loves a clean diaper. What's that? Oh, she says a new diaper makes her feel so fresh and ready for adventures!
So, how about we lie back, nice and easy, and get you a fresh bum? Then a big hug and kiss, and you can go right back to your toys. That sounds much better than being an overthinking, stinky baby. Yes, it does! Come now, no more stalling, we don't want to end up in the corner with sore bottom again do we? Yeah, that's it. Just remember, Mommy loves you!
