Just thought I’d share this gross find during my 5,000LY trip.
On the map and up close this planet just looks gross. Like there’s a thin layer of clear skin over like..a bloody patch or something. Even the light hitting it makes it look gross.
During my search in the galaxy map for Herbig stars, carbon stars, and wolf-reyet stars, I came across this weird cluster line of primarily class-m stars. I bookmarked a system to come back to this system on my next exploration, since it was only just over 1,000LY out.
I am currently on this run now! I will post more about this run when I complete all my sights and take more pictures.
A more rare posting, but thought it was a bug worth sharing!
This goes back to my last post going to this system to my journey around the Cat’s Paw Nebula. I had logged off after taking those screenshots and came back to my screen...blank at first. Then showing white lines. Then the screen was white and hazey. I was scared I had somehow logged back in inside of the sun, so I tried relogging.
Sure enough I was right. I SPAWNED INSIDE OF THE SUN.
I was pretty terrified, to say the least! I had so much time and data on this flight that I didn’t want to lose it. I was scared to move in fear that my heat would suddenly be 200% and blow up. Any option I had, I had to move my ship to get out...so I took these screenshots as security for a support ticket and quickly boosted away.
Oddly enough, my heat never got above 50%!
To note, these screenshots were taken WELL WITHIN the exclusion zone. An indication that you are too close to a non-landable body and drops you out of supercruise instead of crashing into it, but not without minor damage to the hull. I’m pretty sure that I was at a landable distance. When I was boosting away, the radar had the red backdrop it tends to have when you are landing on a planet.

Man, I'd love to be able to view space like this. I've never seen the Milky Way before because of all the darn light pollution. I could probably stare at a sky like this for hours
Two Steps Forward in the Search for Life on Mars
We haven’t found aliens but we are a little further along in our search for life on Mars thanks to two recent discoveries from our Curiosity Rover.
We detected organic molecules at the harsh surface of Mars! And what’s important about this is we now have a lot more certainty that there’s organic molecules preserved at the surface of Mars. We didn’t know that before.
One of the discoveries is we found organic molecules just beneath the surface of Mars in 3 billion-year-old sedimentary rocks.
Second, we’ve found seasonal variations in methane levels in the atmosphere over 3 Mars years (nearly 6 Earth years). These two discoveries increase the chances that the record of habitability and potential life has been preserved on the Red Planet despite extremely harsh conditions on the surface.
Both discoveries were made by our chem lab that rides aboard the Curiosity rover on Mars.
Here’s an image from when we installed the SAM lab on the rover. SAM stands for “Sample Analysis at Mars” and SAM did two things on Mars for this discovery.
One - it tested Martian rocks. After the arm selects a sample of pulverized rock, it heats up that sample and sends that gas into the chamber, where the electron stream breaks up the chemicals so they can be analyzed.
What SAM found are fragments of large organic molecules preserved in ancient rocks which we think come from the bottom of an ancient Martian lake. These organic molecules are made up of carbon and hydrogen, and can include other elements like nitrogen and oxygen. That’s a possible indicator of ancient life…although non-biological processes can make organic molecules, too.
The other action SAM did was ‘sniff’ the air.
When it did that, it detected methane in the air. And for the first time, we saw a repeatable pattern of methane in the Martian atmosphere. The methane peaked in the warm, summer months, and then dropped in the cooler, winter months.
On Earth, 90 percent of methane is produced by biology, so we have to consider the possibility that Martian methane could be produced by life under the surface. But it also could be produced by non-biological sources. Right now, we don’t know, so we need to keep studying the Mars!
One of our upcoming Martian missions is the InSight lander. InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a Mars lander designed to give the Red Planet its first thorough checkup since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. It is the first outer space robotic explorer to study in-depth the “inner space” of Mars: its crust, mantle, and core.
Finding methane in the atmosphere and ancient carbon preserved on the surface gives scientists confidence that our Mars 2020 rover and ESA’s (European Space Agency’s) ExoMars rover will find even more organics, both on the surface and in the shallow subsurface.

During my exploration around the Cat’s Paw Nebula, I found this system I had bookmarked to visit. Because it had a Herbig [AE/BE] star! These things are really neat! They are pretty young stars that are still n the process of forming...hence all the dusty material that surrounds it. They haven’t quite gotten to the point of having a spectral class yet, which its mass determines when it finally becomes a main sequence.
These are my favorite stars in the game because of their dusty appearance!
This particular star is in the system Cat’s Paw Sector HR-W D1-28
So on my way back from my 5,000LY exploration mission, I ALMOST missed the Spider Nebula! It was almost unseen on the galaxy map. And, sadly, this was as close as I could get. There weren’t any stars or systems closer. Which is a real shame considering this is one of the iconic nebulas! Would of been neat to get nice pictures of this one.
During my solo exploration run to Cat’s Paw, I’ve been super curious about this really bright spot on the galaxy map. Turned out that there was a cluster of bright stars inside this nebula, NGC 6357.
This particular stop ended up having 2 black holes in the system that were very close together and, lucky for me, had a landable body nearby! So I was able to get some nice pictures of that too! In the first image you can see the blackened planet with the distortions of the 2 black holes just to the left of it. Being in a nebula makes seeing these black holes much easier and more interesting!
On my solo exploration run I had to go 5,000 light-years out from human space, so I decided to check out the Cat’s Paw Nebula! Another SUPER nice red one! This time, I also decided to land on a moon to see about getting better pictures. What great views it offers! Definitely going to try and land during my stops from this point on.
This is still my favorite nebula in the game.

Science From the Moon’s Shadow : The Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse was rare in its long, uninterrupted path over land, which provided scientists with a rare chance to investigate the Sun and its influence on Earth in ways that aren’t usually possible.
