I had this theory for horns quite some time ago. Trolls will shave down their horns either with rough edges (like a table corner or a door frame) or with a metal filer. But since hornplay is a thing, they’d have to do it in private. Now if a troll failed to maintain their horns properly, they’ll chip, break and essentially crack. They’re called “fractures” and there are two types; fissure (left) and forked (right). The only way to repair fractures is to bandage them tightly so the open fracture is closed. It will mend itself. If a fracture occurs, it’s highly recommended to drink milk and eat things with a lot of potassium and calcium. They also cause splitting migraines and the calmest of trolls to turn hostile.
