ok so the thing that makes the radiostatic rejection scene extra crazy to me is. we see the kind of person vox is. very vain, very selfish, very closed off...he never took a partner in life, nothing romantically and no friendships, and he actively refused sharing the spotlight with anyone who could possibly get in his way. but he wanted alastor. they knew eachother for years. close for longer than that. people Know us. people Love us. the amount of outs he keeps giving alastor when he jabs at him. how badly vox is shattered by the whole thing, decades and decades later.
vox isn't the kind of person who would've put himself out there. much less to someone as cruel as alastor can be. if he wasn't practically certain alastor would say yes.
and it's crucial to remember WHY vox would think that. because alastor let him. alastor let HIMSELF behave that way!! equally vain, equally selfish, equally closed off alastor ALLOWED this to happen. vox says we've been close for years and alastor AGREES. vox says they're known as a duo and alastor AGREES. alastor who hates vulnerability more than anything, cooing and giggling at vox, drinking with him openly, letting things slide he'd never even tolerate from anyone else and not minding it, him treating vox specifically in such a way that was Notable Enough for them Both to be considered a Set. people Know Us!
the reason alastor reacts so strongly during the bar scene, the reason he REFUSES to take the outs vox hands him, the reason he digs his heel in and doesn't let up is because he's scared. because it snuck up on him too. that affection that companionship their routine and the want for it. what could be more terrifying to a person as paranoid and lonely as alastor to hear the words vox was saying and almost find himself believing them. what a joke!
