It was almost midnight but Charlie’s room was still lit by the small bedside light. Charlie’s bedroom was always the room you slept in when you stayed at your best friend’s place, the burrow. Charlie was in romania most of the time anyway, so the room stayed empty and ready for any guests brought here from hogwarts.
You were cuddled up under several knitted blankets which Molly had happily provided you. The air smelled like wood and burned candles. The snow outside of the window was falling down to the ground silently.
But your eyes were glued to the book in your hands. You had been consumed by the pages all day, much to the disappointment of your best friends George and Fred who had hoped for a day filled with pranks and mischief. But every attempt to motivate you to a prank failed today. The story had consumed your mind entirely.
That was why you were still awake in the middle of the night, reading.
Even though the story was just starting to get interesting you paused your reading when you picked up a quiet creaking just outside of your door.
You looked up from the book. The door was closed all the way but a sliver of light was shining through the crack underneath the door. But there was nothing, no movement. Had you imagined the quiet sound. You already wanted to go back to your book when you heard the creak again. Your eyes snapped up and this time there was movement in the light under the door.
It looked like someone was standing outside your door. You were about to speak up when you were interrupted by a soft knock and then George’s voice, muffled through the thick wood. He called out your name quietly as though trying not to wake anyone.
You closed your book and propped yourself up on one elbow. “George?” You called back just as quietly.
There was a moment of silence before you heard George shift, making the old floor creak once more. “Yeah… can I come in?” He then asked quietly.
You were slightly surprised at his request but answered quickly. “Yeah, of course. Come in.”
George didn’t need to be told twice and carefully opened the door. Orange light spilled into the dim room and there he stood. George’s tall, lanky figure framed by the hallway light. But his posture was different than you were used to. He looked almost slouched forward, his shoulders were hanging slightly and the grin he always wore like an accessory was no where to be seen. Instead his eyes mirrored something soft, almost vulnerable.
“You okay?” You asked quietly while George still hadn’t moved. He tried to plaster a smile onto his lips but it didn’t seem real at all.
“Yeah…” he answered with an unconvincing voice. Your brows furrowed “You sure?” You gently pressed further. George’s smile faltered before he gave up his act and sighed “no… I uhm… I kinda had a nightmare…” he mumbled, fidgeting with the hem of his old quidditch shirt he had repurposed as a sleep shirt.
“A nightmare?” You asked with raised brows “I know, I know, you can make fun of me… but I just… can I just stay here for a bit?” He muttered, trying not to meet your eyes.
“Wasn’t going to make fun of you.” A soft smile spread over your lips. “Com’ere then.” You said, lifting the blankets up as a silent invitation. George’s eyes flickered to you but he hesitated a moment. You sighed “come on now, before my feet freeze off.” You offered him an encouraging smile and that seemed to do the trick.
Because the tall boy slowly closed the door behind himself and carefully walked closer to where you were laying.
He hesitated for another second before he climbed into bed with you. You hummed softly in satisfaction and pulled the blankets over George’s body, trying to cover every inch of him.
He was laying on his back stiff as a board while you shuffled around. When you settled back he turned his head with a small smile. “Thanks…” he said quietly. You smiled “Of course.” You answered in the same hushed tone.
You laid down on your side so you could watch his side profile. A comfortable silence settled over the both of you. You decided to let him be for a moment, giving him the chance to relax.
“Sorry” George finally whispered “I know it’s pathetic… that nightmare just- hit different.” He muttered. You shook your head softly “It’s not pathetic and you also don’t need to apologize.” You whispered in a soft tone. His eyes flickered to you om his left side before he let out a silent stream of air and shifted onto his side so he could look at you properly.
“Nightmares are human” you gave him a soft yet reassuring smile “you wanna talk about it?” You then offered but you could see the way his eyes flickered away from yours. “Or… we could just… you know… cuddle…” you then whispered.
Your words made his eyes flicker back to you, a relieved glimmer in his brown gaze. You got the message without words and chuckled softly. “Come here then.” You whispered and opened your arms. A small smile spread over George’s lips before shuffling closer until your arms could comfortably wrap around his torso.
He hesitantly moved his arms to wrap around your waist. His eyes moved up, meeting yours in a silent question if he was allowed to do that. When the only thing he saw was a gentle smile on your lips he slowly wrapped his arms around you and pulled you closer until your body was flush against his.
George shifted ever so slightly so he could bury his face into the crook of your neck. A soft sigh escaped your lips. You then buried your face into George’s ginger strands meanwhile your hand moved up to cradle the back of his head almost in a protective manner.
You could feel him swallow thickly as though he was holding back a wave of emotions. “You doin’ okay?” You whispered into his hair, your breath gently warming his scalp.
George nodded slightly against your neck “mhm…” He paused for a long moment before he spoke quietly, his voice muffled by your neck. “It’s just… I dreamed- I dreamed I lost you…” Even though his voice was quiet you could hear the slightest tremble in his words.
“Lost me?” You whispered, pulling back ever so slightly to look down at him. He looked up at you with watery eyes. “Yeah, like… properly lost you…” his arms tightened around your waist as if he couldn’t bare the thought of the events of his dream repeating. “And I couldn’t move…” he whispered, it was getting harder for him to speak as the emotions started to overwhelm him.
“Hey…” you whispered, cupping his cheek gently with one hand. “It was all fake. Your mind made it up.” You tried to reassure him while your thumb slowly brushed over his cheekbone.
“I know…” he whispered “Still…” his own hand reached up now, covering yours on his cheek, making your thumb pause. He then moved his hand slightly so he could lift yoyr and gently pushed his fingers between yours.
Your breath caught for a moment “George… what… what are you doing?” You whispered, watching his movements with surprise widened eyes.
He whispered your name, barely a breath, making butterflies erupt in your stomach.
His eyes flickered over your face as if he was looking at you for the first time in months. You could feel your cheeks starting to heat up as his eyes stopped by your lips.
“George…” you whispered once more, trying to get his attention again.
His eyes flicked up to your again, though reluctantly. He whispered your name once again “Can I please kiss you…” he then whispered, his eyes wore almost a pleading look. His eyes made your stomach do a somersault. You took a moment to carve this picture into your memory before you nodded ever so slightly “Yes” you gave him the permission.
A mixture of surprise, hope and relief flooded his expression before he moved and placed his lips onto yours. They were warm and soft, making you whole nody timgle. Your eyes closed as George’s free hand moved to tangle into your hair, tilting your head gently so he had better acces and deepen the kiss.
Your lips moved together in a silent dance. You let go of his hand to slip it into the nape of his neck, pulling him a little closer.
Soft breaths escaped the both of you between kisses until you finally pulled back, the need to properly breathe in growing the better of you. For a split second George’s lips chased yours before he caught himself and let you pull back. He didn’t let you go too far though, his uneven breath of warm air caressed your lips.
Your eyes slowly opened only to be met with George’s brown ones already studying your face. His cheeks were flushed and his lips red from kissing.
A smile spread over your lips “Feeling better?” You whispered making his own lips curl into one as well. “Brilliant to be exact” he answered, making a chuckle escape your throat. “Good” you murmured, now it was your turn to bury your face into his neck. “Let’s talk tomorrow.” You mumbled, letting out a long yawn.
A quiet laugh escaped his own lips “Fine.” He mumbled into your hair, pulling you just another bit closer. You let out a contented hum before the late hour and the comforting warmth of George’s body claimed your consciousness and pulled you into a deep sleep.
