OnlyFans is limited in the ability to search for content. The account creation process is limited and there are not many directions on where to go. OnlyFans is assumed to have been created by a user from another social media site. They are likely to already be familiar with the information they need. OnlyFans works not as an independent platform but is deeply aware of the social media ecosystem that includes accounts on multiple platforms.
Jose van Dijck made this argument in 2013 while comparing the LinkedIn and Facebook profiles. The possibility of presenting the self on two different platforms allowed context-specific performances for the "social (Facebook)," and "professional (LinkedIn). selves. In order to avoid what danah board (2014) refers to as "context collapse", more research has been conducted on accounts and platforms (including Davis 2014.; van der Nagel 2018.; Vickery 2015.) OnlyFans' slogan, "Make Your Influence Pay", is a deliberate reference to the wider culture of social influencers and internet celebrities who have made their fame (Abidin (2018)). Steve, a staffer from OnlyFans, encourages all influencers and bloggers to sign up. Steve 2018 says, "You create great content regardless and your fans love that. So why deny yourself a chance to get paid?" The corporate communication on OnlyFans stresses the broad range of content creators. But the dominant perception, or platform imaginary, is that OnlyFans was created by women who create adult material. Karin van Es and Thomas Poell (2020), who have a similar platform imaginary to OnlyFans, helped me in my research. They also used Eden Litt and Eszter Hartgittai's (2016) concept, the imagined audience, as a guideline for what people can post on social media. Van Es (2020) and Poell (2500) say that a platform imagined is how people view and organise their lives in relation to platforms. These imaginaries contain underlying norms, ideologies, and inform platform experiences. Snapchat, for example, was initially created to send nudes. It has since been reframed around candid photos and spontaneity (Tiidenberg & van der Nagel 2020 : 57). To understand why OnlyFans doesn't exist as an independent platform and relies on established platforms for users, I applied a feminist content assessment approach (Leavy, 2007) to analyze memes. These are media texts that reflect and create social realities. I collected 200 memes regarding OnlyFans. The majority of them inferred that OnlyFans content would have been posted by heterosexual women. One meme reveals the platform imagination most often made fun of by cultural references and jokes about OnlyFans. A three-panel image showing a white man closing his eyes disbelievingly, a popular reaction picture to express incredulity called Blinking White Guy. The caption reads "me" (Cheezburger 2020) and is intended to poke fun at "fans", as well as ironically suggesting the expected content, which is pictures of naked women. Another meme depicts a photo featuring a young woman sitting down on her couch and looking up at her cat. The cat is inadvertently showing its anus to her camera. It is captioned "when you just wanna call your cat but want to start an onlyfans". (@ok_girlfriend2020). It's clear that the meme implies that you can start selling access only to NSFW content. The cat's exposed sexual organs can be used as a metaphor for what paid audiences can expect from the content creators they subscribe to. Platform imaginaries can influence the thinking and actions of social actors in relation to a particular platform (van Es & Poell2020). Bucher (2018) argued that they are valuable because they offer ways for us to see what these imaginations could make possible. ' suggestion that it is a platform for influencers, via its corporate communication, implies two major strategies for this newly emerging platform. OnyFans' owners desire OnyFans be recognized as a wider platform than just NSFW content creators - despite the assumption that OnyFans will only show lewd and naughty content. OnlyFans doesn't provide a base from which to create a profile or make connections. OnlyFans is only one layer of many social media platforms.
