Also, can we just really take in the true excellence and impact of Michonne’s character.

She’s a black woman whose story isn’t defined by the hardship of being a black woman.

She’s given incredible emotional range. She’s absolutely badass and strong, but not stoic and stiff. She’s allowed to be as compassionate and nurturing as she is fierce. She expresses grief, loss, anger, pettiness and annoyance; she also expresses hope, love, devotion, loyalty, and bravery. She’s tough and hardcore, but also soft and feminine.

She’s not the sassy best friend. She’s not the magical negro. She’s not the stepping stone for the male MC to decide he doesn’t want. She’s not forgettable or disposable. She can challenge white characters (including the main man) without the writing trying to humble or punish her.

She’s pivotal (the ratings and fan engagement prove that). She’s desirable. She isn’t chasing after a man who barely considers her to own detriment. Her love interest loves her unconditionally. He respects her and wants her in EVERY way. He dreams of her. He can’t truly live without her.

THIS is an immaculate character, brought to life by an incredible actress who is valued in production, and backed by the narrative. THIS is what characters such as Bonnie Bennett and Abbie Mills (amongst others) deserved. THIS is what we want to see.

Yeah, I've read enough. I think my GH break is going to be an indefinite one after all, because I have enjoyed the Trina Robinson character too much to see this bullshit play out again. I hate that every single one of the important relationships in her life are being undermined under the altar of Esme.

And I hate that they seem to be taking a sledgehammer to Spencer's growth. Both of them written to extreme, unnuanced versions of themselves so they could shove Little Miss White Privilege into the middle of their relationship because they refuse to let her go.

They have the potential to do something amazing with Trina and Spencer, both individually and as a collective, but for some reason they can't stop squandering it for "white is right" bullshit. I just didn't sign up for this "All About Esme" story, I find the optics completely racist and gross. So I'm checking out.

If you follow me, I need you to listen and take this in. Because, words are overused and lose value. Listen.

A Black female character being rightfully angry is NOT the angry Black woman trope. It is not. It is a Black woman being allowed to be angry when she should be.

The angry Black woman trope is a Black woman being angry for no good reason and/or having anger as her one personality trait.

Y'all cannot get mad every time a Black woman gets angry on screen. Sometimes she SHOULD, and y'all should support her. Lest you nudge her in the direction of a Mammy trope. Thanks.

Edit: So. I see a lot of people reblog this and tag as writing notes or something adjacent to that, and listen - definitely, I don't mind anybody using these ideas, directly from a Black woman, to help shape Black female characters.

But I want to clarify that's not the initial intent of the post. Writing characters is pretty important for representation, but the initial purpose of my sharing my thoughts is to perhaps help curb the way that you engage with such characters, because that makes or breaks a lot of fandoms.

If I can sum it up: Let Black female characters have their personalities and feelings without projecting tropes that might not be there.
