These are ‘Ballot Boxes’. I thought it would be nice to share them again. @lyndaladwigceramics and I made them for our collaborative project in the current @pinkprogression exhibition @arvadacenter which closes the November 8. The exhibition theme is around the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Here is our artist statement: "Lynda and I have worked together in the past on collaborative tableware and jewelry pieces using porcelain and sterling silver. As a regular Pink Progression participant, I jumped at the chance to work with Lynda again for Collaborations. As we have worked together before, have the same aesthetic and similar approaches and concerns about our work, we met only once in person after discussing what we would create. Initially, we decided to make our version of a stand-alone ‘suffragette-era’ ballot box as symbolic of our focus to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. The ballot box form met our criteria of being function driven, three-dimensional, and with the added bonus of the ‘box’ being a vessel strongly associated with the female sex. Unfortunately, the first porcelain box, which was 12”x12,” literally fell apart in the kiln. We were shattered. During a brain storming session on Facetime we came up with the idea of doing two smaller boxes (more likely to hold their form during firing). One box retains the suffragette-white and silver elements of the original box and represents the visible, privileged women associated with the suffragette movement. The second box, also with the mascot color of white for suffrage, appears weathered and battered with copper and brass trappings instead of silver. This box represents the unseen or historically unacknowledged suffragettes, i.e., the working class and women of color. What we hope viewers will take away from this work is inspiration to self-reflect and educate themselves: about suffrage, women and the vote, class disparity and how voting is a right in our democracy that many people fought and died for. We invite you to share ‘WHY I VOTE....’ and choose a box to place your ballot in.” Please feel free to participate and post WHY I VOTE at #ppwhyivote and #vote! https://www.instagram.com/p/CHIjS2DFkRE/?igshid=gjogqns53fuk
