Stephanie couldn’t help but grin at the compliment. Being Tim’s (now ex) girlfriend, she had never felt like the genius. Hell, the entire Batfamily were certifiable geniuses. Steph had always had to work for it. “Aw, thanks,” she responded. “But tonight is definitely not the night to worry about school. I’m here…” she stopped as she continued dancing, but Kate’s hands on her waist made it nearly impossible to think and she refused to have those thoughts right now. She shimmied down to a squat by Kate, before rising back up again. “For a good time.”

Stephanie grinned at the suggestion. Despite their family always cautioning her about the man, Steph found herself drawn to the other Dead Robin. They were birds of a feather, pun intended. “Actually, I would pay you to let me see that,” she said, trying to imagine it. “But no, there’s nothing wrong with the suit itself - it looks really good - but I was expecting something more… creative? Or morbid to be completely honest.”

Stephanie was so glad that she had decided to come out tonight. Her social life was, well, slacking lately. Her friendship with Kate was strengthened every day, reminding her distantly of her Cass… but Cass was in Gotham, hell she didn’t even know she was alive probably. Stop it, Steph. Think about now. Today. “That’s good!” Steph exclaimed. Clearly, Kate was trying to keep the episode on the downlow, but the smile on her face told her that she really was past it. “Midterms are over, so I am doing fabulous.”

”Yeah,” Steph agreed, taking another drink of her coffee before continuing. “But what’s nice about New York is there’s always hope, you know? No matter how much it gets kicked, the people know they’ll rise up again.” She didn’t know when she had become such a fan of New York, and while it would never replace home she knew she could stay here for a while. “It’s like a hopeful Gotham.”

She laughed at Tony’s comment about Bruce. If only he knew.”Could you even imagine that? Bruce caring about something other than himself, I mean.” Geez Steph, that’s a little harsh. “And his family, I guess. Not to be a total asshole or anything…” Stephanie sighed inwardly at her awful commentary. Then again, their relationship was difficult to put to words.

So Jason kind of cheated on the costume front. However he wasn’t really that happy about wearing a suit either. But at least it got him away from being a pirate, a zombie or something equally as awful. Putting on a nice suit with a crisp tie and a pair of shined shoes made it easy when he added in that he was James Bond. Just too bad he wasn’t much of a martini drinker. And he really needed to lay off the alcohol if he didn’t want to be dragged off the floor. However, he still didn’t understand why he even agreed to come to this thing. Jason took another sip of his drink and told himself he was working. He focused on every face, and filed them into his memory, barely noticing when the empty space beside him was suddenly occupied.

She should have known she wouldn’t be the only Bat at the party. When everything goes to hell in a handbasket, one thing was always constant and it was that her second family would fix it. But Jason wasn’t the first person she would have picked to do recon. Noticing that he was clearly focused on the crowd, Steph easily saddled up next to him. “Well, you’ve clearly gone all-out for your costume,” she said, sipping on her own drink.

Surveying her work, MJ grinned. The decor was amazing, a little over the top, but this was Tony Stark’s bill. He’d always been extravagant, he’d enjoy it. Everyone’s costumes were incredible, too, despite there being a few who obviously put no effort in. (She’d totally have a tipsy – never drunken – word with them later!) As ‘Monster Mash’ started playing, she turned to the person beside her, waggling her eyebrows. “You know what you should do?” She asked, her smile growing. “Dance with me!”

Stephanie was having the time of her life. Surrounded by dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of people she barely knew, and a few friends who knew her just enough - it was as good as a masquerade as any. When MJ spoke, she turned to her friend and laughed. “You read my mind,” Steph said as she grabbed MJ’s hands, leading her to the dance floor.

“Please, you’re the stud,” Kate laughed. An actual laugh, bright and bubbly, just like it used to be. She was glad to know it wasn’t gone forever. All it took was a little champagne and a great party to draw it out of her. She took Steph by the hand, grinning at her, and pulled her towards the dance floor. “I demand this dance, Miss Stephy Dee,” she quipped, twirling her around.

Stephanie was glad to see a smile on Kate’s face, to hear her laugh. “I was saving it just for you,” she replied, laughing at Kate’s joke. She twirled on the dance floor, and in return twirled Kate. “So, how’s my best friend?”

“Peter,” he replied, thankful that he didn’t stutter over the single word. It had happened in the past. He really wasn’t the best at parties – or conversation in general. “Nice to meet you, Stephanie Dee,” he joked, then cringed inwardly. Bad joke, Peter. Don’t make jokes.

He leaned over the bar, but it took embarrassingly long for the bartender to notice them. “Mr. Parker!” the man said, he must’ve been one of the Tower’s regulars. Peter recognized him, too, but couldn’t place a name. “What can I get for you and your friend?”

“I’ll uh, just have a coke, thanks,” Peter said, smiling gently. “For you? I mean, it’s free, so you should get whatever you want. Mr. Stark has a crazy collection.”

Stephanie smiled at the joke. “Nice to meet you too. And, actually, my middle name is Agnes, which is a horrible middle name so really it would be Stephanie A but that doesn’t have as good of a ring to it and... now I’m rambling. Sorry.”

“I’ll take a coke too,” she told the bartender, regaining her composure. Peter Parker. The name rang a bell somewhere in the distance, but she couldn’t remember exactly what from. Probably because of the pre-gaming from earlier, but she was only slightly buzzed from that now. “So, Peter. What brings you to the party?”
