I wanted to be a good girl and use some programming language that was "made for" making web applications, but the more I tried I realized I just wanted to go back to C++. I've been having fun reinventing the wheel creating my own Intent and Result types, representation objects, using those to generate a document structure and finally passing that as a HTTP response. It feels really good to own most of that pipeline (besides the async handler).

Here you can see the basic structure. Parse request into an intent, which is either a command or a query. Each intent has a modeled result type (in this case, the changed pet representation after applying the paintbrush, or a command error), and the Result can be unwrapped into the representation or the error for branching. The handler will determine if the actor is allowed to act on the pet, if the brush exists in the store and can be applied. If it can be applied, an event is appended in an event store for the pet. Then the events are played back and used to create the representation, which is stored in the representation store until the next event. The updated representation is passed to the response which swaps the contents of the DOM using htmx.

That's the idea anyway.

canlander players are unironically playing mox diamond in 32 land artifact decks. i’d never look at it before im 40+ lands and have some synergy. have they read the card?? i want my city of brass to be card disadvantage. sentences dreamt up by the deranged.

and no this isn’t just expensive card cope i’m proxying time walk in my nadu deck (another deck that is hugely punished by running less lands even though you have infinite dorks)

Pet Game survey responses

Thank you for your taking the time to answer my survey! I got 655 responses, way more than I imagined I'd get! As always, you learn more about the flaws in your methodology than you do about what you wanted to ask about when you make a survey like this, so I might come back with a new one at some point.

I also really appreciated the comments I got on my posts, it really highlighted some of my blind spots, both in games you play and in gameplay and features!

Below the cut are answer breakdown pie charts for each question. I put some notes after some of them, but it is not super exhaustive.

No surprise Neopets and Flight Rising dominate here since I posted the survey in those tags on here. Some commenters felt that some games were missing here, but post hoc i feel like this question was misstated. I didn't want to make the survey too long or detailed so I opted for twelve options, but I should have narrowed it down more or made more questions with greater granularity.

Shout-out to the principled fella who prefers when you don't have to name your pet!

This one doesn't surprise at all.

Neither does this. There's a small minority who likes pet death in their games, and more people are OK with it if it is due to specific actions the player takes.

No real surprises here, especially considering where I posted the survey.

This is the most highly sought after feature in a pet game in my survey. Much more important than being able to name your pet!
